Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the socio-economic factors in the rise and development of nationalism in the Tamil-speaking region of the Madras Presidency in India between 1858 and 1918. It analyses the dynamic interaction between socio-economic conditions and nationalism in Tamil Nadu by applying both historical methods of documentary analysis and a sociological perspective. The volume looks at the advent of Western education and the role of Christian missionaries, the growth of the local press, socio-religious reform movements, decline of indigenous industries and the land revenue policies of the colonial government to arrive at a comprehensive portrait of the rise of nationalism in the Madras Presidency. The volume is invaluable for scholars of colonial history and the Indian freedom movement in southern India.

Book excerpt: Exploring the enduring legacy of untouchability in India, this book challenges the ways in which the Indian experience has been represented in Western scholarship. The authors introduce the long tradition of Dalit emancipatory struggle and present a sustained critique of academic discourse on the dynamics of caste in Indian society. Case studies complement these arguments, underscoring the perils and problems that Dalits face in a contemporary context of communalized politics and market reforms.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Cultural Nationalism in South India by : Marguerite Ross Barnett
Download or read book The Politics of Cultural Nationalism in South India written by Marguerite Ross Barnett and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Processor Barnett analyzes a successful political movement in South India that used cultural nationalism as a positive force for change. By exploring the history of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party, the author provides a new perspective on political identity. In so doing, she challenges the interpretation of cultural nationalism as a product of atavistic and primordial forces that poses an inherent threat to the integrity of territorially defined nation-states and thus to the progress of modernization. The founding of the DMK party in 1949, the author shows, was a turning point in the political history of Tamil Nadu, South India, because it ushered in the era of Tamil cultural nationalism. In the hands of the DMK, Tamil nationalism became an ideology of mass mobilization and thus shaped the articulation of political demands for a generation. The author analyzes the social, political, and economic factors that gave rise to cultural nationalism; the interplay between cultural nationalist leaders; and the role of cultural nationalism in a heterogeneous nation-state. Book excerpt: This book “Facets of Contemporary History”is a selection of research papers, presented in the International Conference on Contemporary History which was held on 30th and 31st January 2015. This conference was organized by the Department of History, Tourism and Travel Management, Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai. It gives us great pleasure to put together a selection of the papers for the public in the form of a book in the interest of research. Contemporary History refers to the history of the immediate past or that which can be expected to remain in living memory. While there are areas of history which have branched off from contemporary history such as social history and economic history this conference took a very broad look at contemporary events from not just a historical but also a social science perspective. This Book contains 6 Sections namely Political History, Socio-Cultural History, Gender, Economic History, Environment and Tourism. We would like to place on record the Management of the college for the moral and financial support extended in the conduct of the Conference and in the production of the book. Thanks are due to our respected Chairman of the Trust Board, Mr. V.M.Muralidharan for all his support and encouragement. Heartfelt thanks are due to Prof.Dr.Karu. Nagarajan Member Secretary, TAMIL NADU STATE COUNCIL FOR HIGHER EDUCATION for their generous financial Assistance towards the conduct of the Conference. This book was released on 2002 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gandhian phase of national movement offered to the people a number of constructive programmes and political movements. The success of these programmes and movements depended on politicization and mobilization of the masses. In communicating and propagating the political ideas of the nationalist leaders to the masses the nationalist intelligentsia of Andhra played an effective and remarkable role. They were influenced by the Gandhian ideology and political techniques and through their writings influenced the people to a great extent. They made the people to believe, to accept, to support, to involve and to participate in the national movement. They criticised the colonial rule and authorised the national movement. In the process they wrote dramas, songs, books, pamphlets, leaflets and articles in newspapers imbuing the people with patriotic fervour, indomitable courage and heroic-sacrifice to an extraordinary degree. The consequent efflorescence of nationalist literature contributed to the formation of people s national consciousness and their voluntary participation in the national movement to such an extent that the colonial Government began to sense a threat to its own existence and was forced to resort to proscription and suppression of ideas and oppression of the freedom of the press.
