Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of the complex conflict situation in Kashmir. Through an internal perspective, it charts the shift in the Kashmiri response towards the Centre and offers a detailed examination of the background in which separatist politics took roots in Kashmir, and the way it changed its nature in the militancy and post-militancy period. The volume shows how separatism and armed militancy, as manifest in the Valley in the late 1980s, (though augmented by external factors) have been internal responses to the changing nature of Kashmiri identity politics. It explores how the ideas central to Indian nationalist politics — especially democracy and secularism — echoed in Kashmir and were instrumental in dismantling the feudal structure and negotiating an autonomous space within the framework of asymmetrical federalism. Seamlessly blending facts and incisive analyses, this book raises new questions about the nature of conflict and contestation in the region. It will be of great interest to researchers and scholars of Indian politics, especially on Jammu and Kashmir, and sociology, as well as government bodies, think tanks and the interested general reader.

In 2000, Bill Clinton declared it the most dangerous place in the world and since then the situation continues to escalate. Positioned between India, Pakistan and China – three nuclear powers – Kashmir is the most militarized zone on the planet. Against this backdrop, the urgency to understand what Jammu and Kashmir means to those who actually belong to its territory has increased. This book not only helps readers navigate subtleties in a complex part of the world but is the first of its kind – written for a global audience from local perspectives, which to date have been sorely lacking.

Download or read book Politics of State Autonomy and Regional Identity written by Sunita and published by Gyan Publishing House. This book was released on 2006 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The demand of State autonomy has remained a highly contentious issue in Indian Politics right since the time when accession of Kashmir to the Indian federalism took place. This is a demand that often generate tension between Center and the State. It is felt that the autonomy for the State may actually come to mean autonomy for Kashmir region only. It may not flow to the regional and sub-regional levels. The autonomy that extends beyond the State needs a multi-layered package of autonomy that extends beyond the State to the regional or sub-regional levels. Autonomy is needed to inspire confidence to the people, to make the system more democratic, to ensure speedier and balanced development and to make the administration accountable to the people and thus more efficient and above all, to evolve a composite and harmonious personality of the State. None of these can be achiever in the present unitary system of the state and by centralization of power and administration. A more federalized and bottom-up approach is needed to solve the problem of the State. This book is an attempt to examine the relationship of Kashmir identity with the Indian Union, the regional identity of Jammu and Ladakh with the State. This book on the one hand is the description of the relationship between the Centre and the State and on the other hand is the description of relationship between the three regions, namely Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. My prescription is deeply federal and decentralizing in nature.

Book Synopsis What Happened to Governance in Kashmir? by : Aijaz Ashraf Wani
Download or read book What Happened to Governance in Kashmir? written by Aijaz Ashraf Wani and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Happened to Governance in Kashmir? examines the policies, strategies, and tactics followed by the Indian state and the ‘client’ governments in Srinagar to manage the conflicted state of Jammu and Kashmir during 1948–89 . It shows how the policies deployed to ‘create order in disorder’ functioned inversely and turned Kashmir into a smoldering volcano which erupted in 1989–90. The author argues that as the issue of dispute and policy framework has been constant, the clash between the status quoist state and the society was inevitable. The crisis deepened along with technological, economic, cultural, and social changes. Based on a variety of contemporary sources, this book deals with many aspects of Kashmir’s governance through different political phases. It shows how the personal proclivities and decisions of each prime minister/chief minister played a role in determining the pattern of rule and the course of history with consequences felt many miles downstream.

In 1971, Ban Was Imposed On Him To Enter Into The State Territory, Which Was Lifted In 1972. In 1975, Shaikh-Indira Accord Was Signed By Which He Joined The National Mainstream After A Lapse Of 22 Years.During 1953 1975, Shaikh Mohammad Abdullah Labeled India As An Expansionist And Colonial Power Trying To Subjugate Kashmir. He Considered The Accession Of Kashmir With India As His Greatest Blunder And Demanded The Right Of Self-Determination For The People Of Kashmir. He Also Advocated To Settle The Kashmir Issue By A Free And Fair Plebiscite, And Unconditional Withdrawal Of The Indian Troops. These Ideas Of The Shaikh Found Their Way Direct To The Hearts Of People Of Kashmir, Because They Were Not Taken Into Confidence In 1947 When The Accession With India Was Managed. When The Shaikh Switched Over To The Indian Nationalism In 2975, The People Of Kashmir Were Left In Dilemma. Book Synopsis Kashmir as a Borderland by : Antia Mato Bouzas
Download or read book Kashmir as a Borderland written by Antia Mato Bouzas and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-14 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Kashmir as a Borderland: The Politics of Space and Belonging across the Line of Control* examines the Kashmir dispute from both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) and within the theoretical frame of border studies. It draws on the experiences of those living in these territories such as divided families, traders, cultural and social activists. Kashmir is a borderland, that is, a context for spatial transformations, where the resulting interactions can be read as a process of 'becoming' rather than of 'being'. The analysis of this borderland shows how the conflict is manifested in territory, in specific locations with a geopolitical meaning, evidencing the discrepancy between 'representation' and the 'living'. The author puts forward the concept of belonging as a useful category for investigating more inclusive political spaces.
