Book Synopsis Managing Coastal Erosion by : National Research Council
Download or read book Managing Coastal Erosion written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More and more of the nation's vast coastlines are being filled with homes and vacation resorts. The result is an increasing number of structures built on erosion-prone shoresâ€"with many of these structures facing collapse or damage. In response to mounting property losses, Congress has given the Federal Emergency Management Agency responsibility for incorporating coastal erosion into its National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). This book from the National Research Council addresses the immediate question of how to develop an erosion insurance programâ€"as well as the larger issues raised by the continually changing face of our nation's shorelines. Managing Coastal Erosion explores major questions surrounding a national policy on coastal erosion: Should the federal government be in the business of protecting developers and individuals who build in erosion-prone coastal areas? How should such a program be implemented? Can it prompt more responsible management of coastal areas? The volume provides federal policymakers, state floodplain and resource managers, civil engineers, environmental groups, marine specialists, development companies, and researchers with invaluable information about the natural processes of coastal erosion and the effect of human activity on those processes. The book also details the workings of the NFIP, lessons to be learned from numerous state coastal management programs, and much more.

Book Synopsis Mitigating Shore Erosion Along Sheltered Coasts by : National Research Council
Download or read book Mitigating Shore Erosion Along Sheltered Coasts written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-05-04 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like ocean beaches, sheltered coastal areas experience land loss from erosion and sea level rise. In response, property owners often install hard structures such as bulkheads as a way to prevent further erosion, but these structures cause changes in the coastal environment that alter landscapes, reduce public access and recreational opportunities, diminish natural habitats, and harm species that depend on these habitats for shelter and food. Mitigating Shore Erosion Along Sheltered Coasts recommends coastal planning efforts and permitting policies to encourage landowners to use erosion control alternatives that help retain the natural features of coastal shorelines.

Book Synopsis Coastal Engineering by : Dominic Reeve
Download or read book Coastal Engineering written by Dominic Reeve and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective coastal engineering is expensive, but it is not as costly as neglect or ineffective intervention. Good practice needs to be based on sound principles, but theoretical work and modelling also need to be well grounded in practice, which is continuously evolving. Conceptual and detailed design has been advanced by new industry publications since the publication of the second edition. This third edition provides a number of updates: the sections on wave overtopping have been updated to reflect changes brought in with the recently issued EurOtop II manual; a detailed worked example is given of the calculation of extreme wave conditions for design; additional examples have been included on the reliability of structures and probabilistic design; the method for tidal analysis and calculation of amplitudes and phases of harmonic constituents from water level time series has been introduced in a new appendix together with a worked example of harmonic analysis; and a real-life example is included of a design adapting to climate change. This book is especially useful as an information source for undergraduates and engineering MSc students specializing in coastal engineering and management. Readers require a good grounding in basic fluid mechanics or engineering hydraulics, and some familiarity with elementary statistical concepts.

Book Synopsis Shoreline for the Public by : Dennis W. Ducsik
Download or read book Shoreline for the Public written by Dennis W. Ducsik and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1974 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of land management along the coastal shoreline is an important one for the American public, whose already extraordinary recreational demands on this limited space are expected to nearly triple by the turn of the century. "Shoreline for the Public" notes that the institutional mechanisms operating over the past three centuries to allocate scarce coastal resources among competing users have brought unchecked private development to America's coasts. Compounded by problems of pollution, erosion, and the increasing tendency of private owners to restrict public access, this trend has resulted in severe limitations on opportunities for public recreation. The Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972 proclaims a national interest in the problem of decreasing public recreational space in the face of mushrooming demand. This study discusses the social significance of the problem, outlines the causes of coastal mismanagement in terms of the organization of economic and political activity, and examines in detail the legal issues pertinent to the formation of public policy. Included are analyses of the legal regimes governing public versus private rights in seashore areas, the judicial application of common-law principles to secure public recreational rights, shoreline acquisition, and the application of land-use controls to regulate shoreline development. The author concludes that a number of legal techniques "can" be made effective in preserving the seashore as a unique recreational resource for public use. While concentrating on the narrow land-sea strip, "Shoreline for the Public" raises larger issues facing environmental resource management. Decreasing open space for public recreation is prototypical of the complexity of coastal resource management issues. The problems cannot be solved solely by judicial activity but will require coherent and orderly long-range legislative and administrative management to make equitable and efficient choices among policy alternatives. Bringing public recreation, private use, and conservation into balance will require the application of new techniques at the interfaces between government and the courts, between government and the citizenry, and between different levels of government.
