Book excerpt: What is the best management style for the police? Police Mission discusses the values and norms inherent in the American police mission, and examines how police respond to challenges that arise while attempting to uphold this mission. It reveals that the way officers are being trained in ethics and human relations are not effective as they could be, and argues that policing has to move towards a greater emphasis on human values, moral sensitivity, and discerning judgment. A large number of themes ranging from personnel management, occupational culture, and innovative experiments in US policing techniques are examined. Several organizational theories as well as examples of international policing efforts from England to Japan are also analyzed. An important contribution to police literature, this book will be a valuable aid to students of criminology as well as practitioners and researchers of police science.

Book Synopsis The EU's Afghan Police Mission by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Lords: European Union Committee
Download or read book The EU's Afghan Police Mission written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Lords: European Union Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-02-16 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report finds that the EU's Police Mission in Afghanistan risks failing in an area where the EU should be showing leadership. The Committee found that the Afghan National Police force is in a dire state due to high attrition and illiteracy rates, and corruption. The mission must pay greater attention to the most basic of policing skills, not least reading and writing, if it is to succeed. The EU is undertaking a vital task in Afghanistan, but it must address the reasons why the mission is failing before it is too late. Reasons include: too few staff - the small target of 400 people has never been met, demonstrating lack of EU commitment and meaning that the mission cannot cover many important parts of the country; the EU and NATO are not working together properly; insufficient attention has been paid to the Afghan judiciary where there are problems of capacity and corruption levels, which risk making police reform unproductive and seriously limiting prosecution levels. The Committee is also concerned that the timetable for building up Afghanistan's ability to police itself does not coincide with the departure of foreign combat troops.

Book Synopsis “Non-Standard” Military Police Mission by : SGM Robert R. Gosselin
Download or read book “Non-Standard” Military Police Mission written by SGM Robert R. Gosselin and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My field artillery unit was mobilized to perform a non-standard military police mission during Operation Iraqi Freedom II. The unit was part of the largest National Guard mobilization from our state since the Vietnam era. The challenges of deploying a field artillery unit as an ad hoc MP company were many. The challenges were overcome through the strength of our NCO Corps. As I write this paper, I am preparing for a deployment, a non-standard mission with my current unit. As I compare the two mobilizations, it is apparent that the process for mobilizing, training and preparing our soldiers has improved since the first rotation, but issues concerning the selection of units for non-standard mission still exist five years later.

Book Synopsis Police Corruption by : Maurice Punch
Download or read book Police Corruption written by Maurice Punch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policing and corruption are inseparable. This book argues that corruption is not one thing but covers many deviant and criminal practices in policing which also shift over time. It rejects the 'bad apple' metaphor and focuses on 'bad orchards', meaning not individual but institutional failure. For in policing the organisation, work and culture foster can encourage corruption. This raises issues as to why do police break the law and, crucially, 'who controls the controllers'? Corruption is defined in a broad, multi-facetted way. It concerns abuse of authority and trust; and it takes serious form in conspiracies to break the law and to evade exposure when cops can become criminals. Attention is paid to typologies of corruption (with grass-eaters, meat-eaters, noble-cause); the forms corruption takes in diverse environments; the pathways officers take into corruption and their rationalisations; and to collusion in corruption from within and without the organization. Comparative analyses are made of corruption, scandal and reform principally in the USA, UK and the Netherlands. The work examines issues of control, accountability and the new institutions of oversight. It provides a fresh, accessible overview of this under-researched topic for students, academics, police and criminal justice officials and members of oversight agencies.
Book Synopsis Police Innovation and Control of the Police by : David Weisburd
Download or read book Police Innovation and Control of the Police written by David Weisburd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Police Innovation and Control of the Police: Problems of Law, Order and Community brings together an impressive array of scholars and analysts to examine the impact of the development of crime control strategies on problems of police corruption and abuse. The text provides an historical overview of the development of legal control of the police, and examines the challenges that recent innovations, such as community or problem oriented policing present to the traditional, historical mechanisms for maintaining control of the police. Additionally, a comparative perspective is featured that draws upon the experiences of the Gorbachev era in the Soviet Union as well as on the history of European law enforcement over the last century. This book is instrumental for encouraging discussion and debate of police innovation and its impact on the ability of society to control the police abuse. In light of the Los Angeles riots of the Spring of 1992, scholars, practitioners, and students of crime prevention studies, criminology, and psychology will find this volume timely, topical, and provocative.
Book Synopsis Routledge Handbook of International Statebuilding by : David Chandler
Download or read book Routledge Handbook of International Statebuilding written by David Chandler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-02 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new Handbook offers a combination of theoretical, thematic and empirical analyses of the statebuilding regime, written by leading international scholars. Over the past decade, international statebuilding has become one of the most important and least understood areas of international policy-making. Today, there are around one billion people living in some 50-60 conflict-affected, 'fragile' states, vulnerable to political violence and civil war. The international community grapples with the core challenges and dilemmas of using outside force, aid, and persuasion to build states in the wake of conflict and to prevent such countries from lapsing into devastating violence. The Routledge Handbook of International Statebuilding is a comprehensive resource for this emerging area in International Relations. The volume is designed to guide the reader through the background and development of international statebuilding as a policy area, as well as exploring in depth significant issues such as security, development, democracy and human rights. Divided into three main parts, this Handbook provides a single-source overview of the key topics in international statebuilding: Part One: Concepts and Approaches Part Two: Security, Development and Democracy Part Three: Policy Implementation This Handbook will be essential reading for students of statebuilding, humanitarian intervention, peacebuilding, development, war and conflict studies and IR/Security Studies in general.
