Book Synopsis Hispanics in the United States by : Pastora San Juan Cafferty
Download or read book Hispanics in the United States written by Pastora San Juan Cafferty and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hispanics in the United States represents a collective exploration providing a basic foundation of the information available to understand Hispanics in the United States and create an effective policy agenda. Hispanics are projected to be the largest minority group in the United States in the twenty-first century. The contributions define an agenda which will be useful for students, scholars, service practitioners, political activists, as well as policy makers. The opening essays define the diversity of the Hispanic experience in America and put each of the other essays within a larger context. This edition adds a new introduction by the editors incorporating and evaluating the implications of the results of the national 2000 census. The book is organized into two sections: the first establishes the historical, demographic, religious, and cultural context of Hispanics in the United States. The second describes the major issues facing this population in the American social structure, specifically the areas of health care, the labor market, criminal justice, social welfare, and education. The work concludes with a discussion of the role played by Hispanics in the political life of the nation. The contributors, all of whom are scholars with demonstrated competence in the areas, include: Teresa A. Sullivan, David Maldonado, Melissa Roderick, Barry Chiswick, Michael Hurst, Zulema Suarez, Alvin Korte, Katie McDonough, Cruz Reynoso, and Christine Marie Sierra, as well as David Engstrom and Pastora San Juan Cafferty. Together they have produced a book which will be extremely useful to anyone developing public policies and creating social interventions at either the national or local levels during the coming decade. This new edition is a valuable contributor to discussions about the issues defining the population that will be the largest minority group in the United States in this century. Pastora San Juan Cafferty is professor, in the School of Social Service Administration, and a member of the Center for Latin America Studies at the University of Chicago. She is co-author of the Dilemma of American Immigration: Beyond the Golden Door and The Politics of Language. She has written extensively on issues of race and ethnicity in America. David W. Engstrom is associate professor in the school of social work at San Diego State University and the author of Presidential Decision Making Adrift. He has published in the areas of immigration, health care, and program evaluation.

Book Synopsis Police in a Multicultural Society by : David E. Barlow
Download or read book Police in a Multicultural Society written by David E. Barlow and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social, political, and economic relationships played key roles in the historical development of the police. The authors present policing strategies from the vantage points of marginalized communities and emphasize the intersection of attitudes about class, race/ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation with policies. Police practices cannot be class neutral in a class society, nor can they be race neutral or gender neutral in a racist, sexist, and heterosexist society. The key to understanding the relationship between the police and society is to think critically about the role of power and interests. The second edition includes a new chapter in the section on the police and rebellion covering recent events. There is also a new chapter on Latino/a police officers and an expanded chapter on LGBTQ police officers. Without meaningful social change toward greater justice, police reforms such as community policing and training in cultural diversity will fall short of creating an institution characterized by fairness and equality for all members of society. A clear view of history is essential for understanding the challenges a more diverse police force faces in today’s multicultural environment.

Book Synopsis The Challenge of Community Policing by : Dennis P. Rosenbaum
Download or read book The Challenge of Community Policing written by Dennis P. Rosenbaum and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1994-04-08 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community policing has become the new orthodoxy for police in the United States, as well as in other countries around the world. Although the movement's philosophies and practices are spreading rapidly, little is known about the range of ongoing activities, the components of these experimental initiatives, the problems and challenges encountered, and the level of success in achieving objectives. Providing a clear picture of national and international trends in progressive police administration, the book explores the cutting edge of this movement with some of the best empirical studies to date. The editor has gathered together the expertise of widely recognized researchers to address the fundamental question of whether community policing is on the road to fulfilling its many promises. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, the authors present a thorough evaluation of the social and organizational processes involved in planning and implementing community policing, as well as the effects of such programs.

Download or read book Enhancing Police Service Delivery written by James F. Albrecht and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary police service delivery and performance are complex phenomena. Law enforcement, particularly at the local level, must therefore face the additional challenges of globalization, cybercrime, counter-terrorism and calls for reform, at a time when extreme budgetary constraints are being implemented. Policing operations encompass multiple critical tasks and responsibilities not routinely measured and evaluated, such as response to incidents involving medical assistance, homelessness, mental illness, community engagement, and neighborhood problem-solving endeavors. This volume aims to provide government, criminal justice and policing administrators, policy makers and criminal justice scholars and researchers with comprehensive analyses of the critical issues impacting the challenges inherent in providing effectual public safety, security and service, all from a global perspective. It takes into account popular criticism, extreme budgetary constraints, and the relatively novel and overwhelming challenges of terrorism and cybercrime. The book merges study and practice to identify avenues to best serve community interests, ensure organizational success, and enhance public confidence in policing and in rule of law.
