Book excerpt: This special anthology includes poems, essays, and artwork surrounding the events of January 6, 2021. Poets and artists from around the world were moved by the horrifying events which occurred in the United States Capitol of D.C. at the behest of President -rump. The world looked on as the United States and democracy was shaken to its core. The strength of those who defended the Capitol that day will never be forgotten. Poets have the power to call to action, to highlight injustice, and ultimately, to heal. This collection is a cry from a broken world and a call for unity.

Book excerpt: Juan Francisco Manzano and Gabriel de la Concepción Valdés (Plácido) were perhaps the most important and innovative Cuban writers of African descent during the Spanish colonial era. Both nineteenth-century authors used Catholicism as a symbolic language for African-inspired spirituality. Likewise, Plácido and Manzano subverted the popular imagery of neoclassicism and Romanticism in order to envision black freedom in the tradition of the Haitian Revolution. Plácido and Manzano envisioned emancipation through the lens of African spirituality, a transformative moment in the history of Cuban letters. Matthew Pettway examines how the portrayal of African ideas of spirit and cosmos in otherwise conventional texts recur throughout early Cuban literature and became the basis for Manzano and Plácido’s antislavery philosophy. The portrayal of African-Atlantic religious ideas spurned the elite rationale that literature ought to be a barometer of highbrow cultural progress. Cuban debates about freedom and selfhood were never the exclusive domain of the white Creole elite. Pettway’s emphasis on African-inspired spirituality as a source of knowledge and a means to sacred authority for black Cuban writers deepens our understanding of Manzano and Plácido not as mere imitators but as aesthetic and political pioneers. As Pettway suggests, black Latin American authors did not abandon their African religious heritage to assimilate wholesale to the Catholic Church. By recognizing the wisdom of African ancestors, they procured power in the struggle for black liberation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We know from our literary histories that there was a movement called the Irish Literary Renaissance, and that Yeats was at its head. We know from our political histories that there is now a Republic of Ireland because of a nationalistic movement that, militarily, began with the insurrection of Easter Week, 1916. But what do these two movements have to do with one another?... Because I came to history with literary eyes, I could not help seeing history in terms and shapes of imaginative experience. Thus Movement, Myth, and Image came to be the way in which the nature of the insurrection appeared to me. This method of analyzing historical event as if it were a work of art is not altogether as inappropriate as it might seem when the historical event happens to be a revolution. The Irish revolutionaries lived as if they were in a work of art, and this inability to tell the difference between sober reality and the realm of imagination is perhaps one very important characteristic of a revolutionary. The tragedy of actuality comes from the fact that when, in a revolution, history is made momentarily into a work of art, human beings become the material that must be ordered, molded, or twisted into shape. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insurrection: And Other Poems Insurrection What does this Life amount to - after all, We love - or hate - and then grow old and die, And thus unsatisfied, escape the thrall, That holds us prisoners here, we know not why. We plan and dream, and dream and plan again, And watch both dreams and plans escape and pass, Brief as the rainbow, glittering in the rain. Brief as summer dew, upon the grass. 'Tis such a little while we linger here; We barely learn to live or love our life, Ere we like soldiers on the battle field, Are cut down in the midst of battle strife. Miserable puppets of a Master hand, Made to smirk and smile, and weep and rage, Held in subjection by Divine command, We storm and strut about our mimic stage. What futile buffetings of Fate are we, What thistle down, tossed by the restless wind. What miller's chaff - what dust - what nothingness! Seeking a hope, we do not dare to find. Some of us who hunger for the sea. Must inland live, land bound on every side, And never know its glad waves tumbling free. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: January 6, 2021 was a turning point in American history unlike any other including the Civil War. This is because it was the first time that a legitimately elected President (Trump) encouraged an insurrection and coup of another legitimately elected President-Elect (Biden). The fact that thousands of Trump's supporters actually attempted to disrupt and foil the Constitutionally legal process of confirming the votes and the victory of President -Elect Biden by storming and threatening Congress is a travesty and violation of the U.S. Constitution that must be addressed and commented on. The author believes strongly in the laws and processes that enable democracy to exist and thrive in the United States of America. For without them our country is no more significant or safe and secure than any totalitarian regime that seeks to tyrannize its citizens by military force and terroristic tactics designed to make citizens obey through use of intimidation and genocidal violence. President Biden is faced with a grave and dangerous situation regarding the national security of the United States. For like Lincoln, Biden must acknowledge and take measures against a domestic enemy that is committed to overthrowing the power of the United States Constitution as the legal law of the land. However, Biden's position, and the position of all other loyal and non-extremist Americans becomes more precarious when one realizes that many of the rioters of January sixth were military veterans, military reservists, police officers, etc., the very people that the citizens of this country rely upon for its internal and national security. In addition to their treason, the rioters also espoused agreement and beliefs of white supremacy, anti-Semitism, misogyny and anti-immigrant violence. These regrettable and insidious beliefs run contrary to the principles of personal freedom, liberty and justice that this country was founded upon, and if they are not exposed for the false and criminal beliefs that they are, then there is a real danger of the United States of America suffering a second Civil War, something that the traitors want to happen. There were two lessons learned from the tragedy of the Civil war, one, is that it had to happen, for slavery simply could not exist in a free and democratic country, two, is that another Civil War must never happen again. We are all Americans first and foremost but domestic enemies of the U.S. Constitution must not be allowed to make war against our country, if for no other reason than realizing that the children of our land have a right to grow up free.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poets on the march: 50 crucial poems written in response to the current political climate, selected and introduced by the Ohio Poet Laureate—and son of immigrants—Amit Majmudar. In a political atmosphere where language and even meaning itself are continually under threat, poetry has a critical role to play. And our poets have been responding—in the streets and at their desks, demanding a full accounting from themselves and from their nation. Majmudar's elegant introduction to these vital poems reminds us that "false stories take a lot of killing because they are made of language. Because they are made of language, though, they can be killed." From Solmaz Sharif and Eileen Myles to Kevin Young and Juan Felipe Herrera, American poets of diverse styles and strategies have contributed their truths: scenes from the front lines of resistance, and from the interior of our collective conscience. A final cento by Majmudar—a poem including at least one line or phrase from each of the poems in the volume—celebrates the robust multiplicity of voices in this book and in America now.
