Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetry and Prose, Selections From the Works of Ridgway George Rowley To my Friends, the few, still in the flesh living; to the memory of the many more, nearer and dearer ones, who have passed on, and out, and over the Great Divide, leaving me here to follow on, alone, as best I may, in the Trail of the Lonesome Pine, this small tribute of loyalty and respect is dutifully inscribed. The bone-chilling collection Tales of Kentucky Ghosts presents more than 250 stories that do just that. In his new book, William Lynwood Montell has assembled an entertaining and diverse array of tales from across the commonwealth that will keep you checking under the bed every night. The first-person accounts in this collection showcase folklore that Montell has drawn from archives, family stories, and oral traditions throughout Kentucky. The stories include that of the ghost bride of Laurel County, who appears each year on the anniversary of her wedding day; the tale of the murdered worker who haunts the Simpson County home of his killer and former employer; and the account of the lost mandolin that plays itself in a house in Graves County. These and many other chilling stories haunt the pages of Tales of Kentucky Ghosts. In the tradition of MontellÕs previous Kentucky ghost books (Ghosts across Kentucky and Haunted Houses and Family Ghosts of Kentucky), Tales of Kentucky Ghosts brings together a variety of terrifying narratives that not only entertain and frighten but also serve as a unique record of KentuckyÕs rich heritage of storytelling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public relations professionals are operating in an increasingly challenging and complex environment. Pressures from outside the organisation include new accountabilities, empowered stakeholders, increased public cynicism and a new communication landscape. Internally, there are increasing demands to demonstrate a strategic contribution, alongside a requirement to coach and counsel senior managers exposed to these environmental pressures. This revised and updated edition provides a framework to enable public relations professionals to clearly articulate and demonstrate their own contribution to organisational effectiveness, while also setting out the specific capabilities public relations leaders must exhibit to operate at the highest levels of the organisation. This edition further develops the pioneering approach to integrating thinking around public relations, leadership, and strategy. It has been updated comprehensively to address contemporary developments and introduce new research and fresh perspectives from the authors. New to this edition are insights from Chief Executives on what they expect from public relations leaders and a comprehensive set of capabilities which scope the demanding role of professionals at the top of their game. Concise and practical, this textbook is suitable for MBA and other postgraduate and executive education qualifications in Public Relations and Corporate Communications – especially for those students who wish to pursue a successful career as a professional public relations specialist, able to operate strategically at the top of successful organisations.

However, the weakening of Mycenean seapower, the destruction of the Hittite kingdom, and finally, the limitation on Philistine strength resulting from the alliance between David and the king of Tyre in the eleventh century, combined to open up "for the Phoenicians, in the first quarter of the first millennium B. C. E. vast overseas trading areas" (Oded 1979a, p. 228). By the end of the eleventh century, pottery from Cyprus, after a long absence could once again be found in Israelite-occupied sites (Albright 1960, p. 47). The expansion of the sea trade in the Mediterranean in which, judging by the song of Deborah (Judg. 5), the northern tribes of Asher and Dan (?) (see figure 1-2) would have parti cipated, was accompanied by the inauguration of camel caravans trans porting the goods of southern Arabia to and through Israel (see Bulliet 1975, especially p. 36). Military victories over the Philistines and Syrians, receipts of tribute, and the collection of tolls from the control of trade routes together with the general revival of trade all contributed to Israel's growing wealth. Indeed, the David-Solomon period (most of the tenth century) is often portrayed as the peak of Israelite economic development. In fact there is precious little extra biblical evidence supporting this portrayal. For example, in spite of the reported activity of David and Solomon's scribes, only one example of 6 "Hebrew" writing from this period, the Gezer Calendar, has been found.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of Chautauqua, written by Jesse Lyman Hurlbut and originally published in 1921, is a comprehensive account of the history and development of the Chautauqua Institution, a cultural and educational center located in Chautauqua, New York. The book traces the origins of the Chautauqua movement, which began as a series of summer lectures and religious retreats in the late 19th century, and follows its growth into a national phenomenon that attracted millions of visitors each year. Hurlbut's book delves into the various aspects of the Chautauqua experience, including its religious and educational programs, its recreational activities, and its impact on American culture and society. He explores the lives and contributions of key figures in the Chautauqua movement, such as John Heyl Vincent and Lewis Miller, and describes the various buildings and landmarks that make up the Chautauqua grounds. Throughout the book, Hurlbut emphasizes the importance of the Chautauqua Institution as a place of intellectual and spiritual growth, and as a symbol of the progressive ideals of the era. He also touches on the challenges and controversies that the institution faced over the years, including financial struggles, changing social attitudes, and the impact of World War I. Overall, The Story of Chautauqua offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of one of America's most beloved cultural institutions, and provides insights into the social and intellectual currents that shaped the nation during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
