Download or read book Poetic Encores written by Frank De Canio and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the refreshingly quirky to the humorous, poignant and erotic; from politics to philosophy to the playfully perverse, through sonnet forms, the villanelle and prose poems, Frank’s oeuvre is a treasure chest of nursed musings framed in verse. These are the measured scribblings of a person confronting an unfolding world as he assesses it with literary flair. In these poems there’s love, loss, birth, pique and reconciliation. There’re bawdy fancies and vexing ones. There’re pop culture ruminations, cultural allusions and emotional contusions. He’s got the whole whirlwind of feelings in his writer’s hand as he presents us with a smorgasbord of imagistic fruits. There are lords and swords and bawds in his vocabulary of interests, as well as quotidian encounters. We find a dialectic between a lump in his throat, as Frost has put it, and the written word. A very agreeable way to spend your spare afternoons.

Download or read book Then Come Back written by Pablo Neruda and published by . This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stunning collection gathers never-before-seen poems, found by archivists in boxes kept at the Pablo Neruda Foundation in Chile in 2014. Neruda is renowned for poetry that casts away despair and celebrates living, fired by his belief that there is no unsurmountable solitude. Then Come Back presents Neruda's mature imagination and writing: signature love poems, odes, anecdotes, and poems of the political imagination. Translator Forrest Gander beautifully renders the eros and heartache, deep wonder and complex wordplay of the original Spanish, which is presented here alongside full-colour reproductions of the poems in their original composition on napkins, playbills, receipts, and in notebooks. Then Come Back: The Lost Neruda simultaneously completes and advances the oeuvre of the Nobel Laureate. Discovered during the cataloguing of Neruda's papers, there are 21 poems in all, together with detailed notes about how they relate to his published work.
Download or read book One Secret Thing written by Sharon Olds and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful collection of poems about family and grief—by the Pulitzer Prize and T. S. Eliot Prize for Poetry winner, called "a poet for these times, a powerful woman who won’t back down" (San Francisco Chronicle). Sharon Olds completes her cycle of family poems in a book at once intense and harmonic, playful with language, and rich with a new self-awareness and sense of irony. The opening poem, with its sequence of fearsome images of war, serves as a prelude to poems of home in which humor, anger, and compassion sing together with lyric energy—sometimes comic, sometimes filled with a kind of unblinking forgiveness. These songs of joy and danger—public and private—illuminate one another. As the book unfolds, the portrait of the mother goes through a moving revisioning, leading us to a final series of elegies of hard-won mourning. One Secret Thing is charged throughout with Sharon Olds’s characteristic passion, imagination, and poetic power. The doctor on the phone was young, maybe on his first rotation in the emergency room. On the ancient boarding-school radio, in the attic hall, the announcer had given my boyfriend’s name as one of two brought to the hospital after the sunrise service, the egg-hunt, the crash—one of them critical, one of them dead. I was looking at the stairwell banisters, at their lathing, the necks and knobs like joints and bones, the varnish here thicker here thinner—I had said Which one of them died, and now the world was an ant’s world: the huge crumb of each second thrown, somehow, up onto my back, and the young, tired voice said my fresh love’s name. from “Easter 1960”
Download or read book Encore written by May Sarton and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-08-18 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling author and newly minted octogenarian “demonstrates that old age can be a vibrant and liberating experience . . . fearless and triumphant” (Publishers Weekly). On the second day of her 80th year, May Sarton began a new journal. She wrote it because she wanted “to go on a little while longer;” to discover “what is really happening to me.” This triumphant sequel to Endgame—Sarton’s journal of her 79th year—is filled with the comforting minutiae of daily life, from gardening to planning dinners and floral arrangements to answering fan mail. The wonderful thing about getting older, Sarton writes, is “the freedom to be absurd, the freedom to forget things . . . the freedom to be eccentric.” Her other octogenarian pleasures include preparing for holidays and weddings, lunches with old friends and new admirers, the heady delight of critical recognition, and the rebirth of her lyric voice as she creates new poems. Yet Sarton knows that age can also bring pain and ill health, as well as a deepening awareness of the “perilousness of life on all sides, knowing that at any moment something frightful may happen.”

At its helm, the mysterious Oyemi and her oracles seek out new recruits and root out evil plots. Then a prophecy suggests that someone from inside might bring about its downfall. Book Synopsis The Miniature Wife by : Manuel Gonzales
Download or read book The Miniature Wife written by Manuel Gonzales and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-01-10 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of George Saunders and Aimee Bender, an exuberantly imagined debut that chronicles an ordinary world marked by unusual phenomena. The eighteen stories of Manuel Gonzales’s exhilarating first book render the fantastic commonplace and the ordinary extraordinary, in prose that thrums with energy and shimmers with beauty. In “The Artist’s Voice” we meet one of the world’s foremost composers, a man who speaks through his ears. A hijacked plane circles a city for twenty years in “Pilot, Copilot, Writer.” Sound can kill in “The Sounds of Early Morning.” And, in the title story, a man is at war with the wife he accidentally shrank. For these characters, the phenomenal isn’t necessarily special—but it’s often dangerous. In slightly fantastical settings, Gonzales illustrates very real guilt over small and large marital missteps, the intense desire for the reinvention of self, and the powerful urges we feel to defend and provide for the people we love. With wit and insight, these stories subvert our expectations and challenge us to look at our surroundings with fresh eyes. Brilliantly conceived, strikingly original, and told with the narrative instinct of a born storyteller, The Miniature Wife is an unforgettable debut.
Book Synopsis O. Henry Encore by : William Sydney Porter
Download or read book O. Henry Encore written by William Sydney Porter and published by BEYOND BOOKS HUB. This book was released on 2023-08-24 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the years 1934 and 1935 I made a close study of O. Henry’s Texas contacts. The newspapers of Texas during the time of O. Henry’s residence in the state furnished one of the sources which I investigated; and it was during my research in the files of the Houston Post, 1895–1896, that I discovered the stories and illustrations which make up this book. In reprinting this material, I have followed the original version meticulously except for the correction of obvious typographical errors and certain slight aberrations in punctuation that seemed to demand revision for the sake of consistency or to comply with modern standards of usage. Even so, I have allowed many typographical and even grammatical conventions to remain as they were printed forty years ago. The companion volume to O. Henry Encore, namely, O. Henry in Texas, embodies the results of my investigation into the Texas period of O. Henry’s life, and contains a much more complete account of his work on the Houston Post than I have been able to give in the short introduction to the present volume. Permission for reprinting the material here was arranged for me by former Governor W. P. Hobby of Texas, now President of the Houston Post, and Mr. A. E. Clarkson, Business Manager of the Post. I am happy to express my gratitude to them. My thanks are due also to Dr. Leonidas Warren Payne, Jr., of The University of Texas, Dr. Vernon Loggins, of Columbia University, and the late Dr. Dorothy Scarborough, of Columbia University, for helping in the identification of the material. Download or read book Encore written by Russ Peery and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-07-16 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russ Peery, 89, brings fresh perspectives on nature, life, aging Author announces release of his latest book Encore: A Collection of Poems KISSIMMEE, Fla. - It is not every day that one has access to the thoughts of a gifted 89-year-old poet. Russ Peerys Encore available in large print paperback in August 2016, offers just such an opportunity. In his own words, this striving ancient being finds wonder in dailyness and meaning in aging. In these latter years of mine / I milk the sky and earth for poems / I milk my memories / I milk my thoughts. A former pastor and woodworker, Peery came relatively late to poetry. At the age of 73, he was persuaded by his ailing mother to write seriously, and his wife of 40 years encourages him on a daily basis to keep at it. Peerys latest collection of 180 poems spanning such universal subjects as nature, relationships, love, inspiration, memories, aging, end-of-life reflections is a rare treasure, laying bare in gratifying cadence truths of the human condition and human experience, with the wisdom gathered from nearly nine decades. Encore is illustrated with striking photographs taken by Peerys friend and editor, Joanne Schwandes. In the photos, readers actually see many of the vistas and images that inspire Peery and that he paints so vividly with words. Peerys poems are accessible and varied. A number of poems have a timeless quality: Down by the sea that I see no more / the sea close to me in my days of yore / are waters still lapping a now distant shore Others describe touching encounters with grandchildren and people he knows. Some poems catch the reader off guard with their candor, amuse with their contemporary references (iPhones), and make one laugh out loud with unexpected metaphors. On the whole though, the poems are powerful, keenly incisive and a testament to the unconquerable soul (as in Henleys Invictus). The section entitled Harvesting a Memory is especially poignant, covering loss, nostalgia, disappointment, gratitude and triumph. One excerpt that captures the general tone of the book comes from the poem A Tool Weve Been Given on p. 123: My mind often covets those memories / spawned when this century was new / But rather than cry at the losses / we do best by recalling and smiling / for that is the tool weve been given / that offers us great consolation / when our accumulated years / deny us the blessings / once almost taken for granted. This book at its core pays homage to aging, with humor, insightful perspective and dignity. It will resonate with anyone who is or loves a senior citizen of any age. The poems are particularly well-suited for reading aloud and may easily be used as a springboard for reflection, discussion and reminiscing.
Book Synopsis The Encore by : Charity Tillemann-Dick
Download or read book The Encore written by Charity Tillemann-Dick and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this “heartrending, passionate, and surprisingly humorous account of the conjunction between art and death” (Andrew Solomon, New York Times bestselling author), acclaimed opera singer Charity Tillemann-Dick recounts her remarkable journey from struggling to draw a single breath to singing at the most prestigious venues in the world after receiving not one but two double lung transplants. Charity Tillemann-Dick was a vivacious young American soprano studying at the celebrated Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest when she received devastating news: her lungs were failing, her heart was three and a half sizes too big, and she would die within five years. Medical experts advised Charity to abandon her musical dreams, but if her time was running out, she wanted to spend it doing what she loved. In just three years, she endured two double lung transplants and had to slowly learn to breathe, walk, talk, eat, and sing again. With new lungs and fierce determination, she eventually fell in love, rebuilt her career, and reclaimed her life. More than a decade after her diagnosis, she has a chart-topping album, performs around the globe, and is a leading voice for organ donation. Weaving Charity’s extraordinary tale of triumph with those of opera’s greatest heroines, The Encore illuminates the indomitable human spirit and is “an uplifting story of overcoming significant odds to fulfill a dream” (Kirkus Reviews).
