Book excerpt: We live in a day when the boundary lines of right and wrong are not clear. We are pressured to be politically correct. Values about faith and morality are on trial. Marriage is being redefined and (God) is whatever you make him to be. Poems of Conviction will take you on a journey in your own heart, and ask you to re-evaluate, "What do you believe?" As you take this journey with the author, his hope is not so much to change your mind, but rather, that you will allow God to speak to your heart. He wants the reader to reflect on their relationship with God, others, and the intents of the human heart. Bruce often refers to the great change the Lord has made in his life. Each poem is juxtaposed with a short commentary and artwork which further expresses the inspiration behind them. Readers will walk away from Poems of Conviction feeling refreshed and contemplative with the opportunity to consider how the themes discussed are manifested in their own lives. Straight2theHeart.net

Book excerpt: Each and every year, the Hope for Ethiopia team at Whitewell Metropolitan Tabernacle, Belfast, travel to Ethiopia for fellowship with our Brothers and Sisters in Christ. They also bring presents for all the children there, which are, in all likelihood, the only gifts any of the children will receive this year. I had the great privilege of tagging along on the most recent trip and witnessed firsthand the magnificent work the team carried out. It was while on this trip that these words were given to me, which makes this poem just that little bit special: We thank you, our Lord Jesus, for your travelling mercies sent, And how we felt your presence everywhere we went. We place our faith and trust in you for the remainder of our stay, Praying we bring joy to you in all we do and say. As we gather here together, after several thousand miles, Taking so much comfort from the children and their smiles. So thankful we were able to hear your words and heed, And give a little something back to comfort those in need. The days have passed so quickly, and soon we travel home, But we will not forget this trip no matter where we roam. Friendships were established, as we worked with common aim, And with God's grace, in twelve moths time, we'll do it all again. All proceeds from the sale of these books will go to Hope for Ethiopia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 2019, I travelled again to Ethiopia with the Hope for Ethiopia team attached to Whitewell Metropolitan Tabernacle in Belfast. We met once again with our brothers and sisters in Christ on our one-week visit. To say that our time spent there was blessed would be an understatement. During our time there, we had the opportunity to take part in worship and fellowship with them, but our hearts were again truly stolen by the children there. We took with us on the trip in excess of fifty suitcases filled with gifts for the children, simple and inexpensive gifts—a few T-shirts, underwear, a toy,and some sweets. Our reward was the tears of joy displayed on each little face. Perhaps it was a logistical nightmare in the packing and carriage of the suitcases, but in truth, the smiles on display made all the effort worthwhile. We visited three separate locations—Kuriftu, where we have a school, church, and clinic with over four hundred children attending the Christ Centered School; Bobaguya, where we have a Bible class and kindergarten for around sixty children, allowing their parents to find work; and finally, Ambo, where we have really seen the hand of God moving among his people in a makeshift church the congregation has grown to over three thousand worshippers! Even better was the news that greeted us there. This congregation, despite their poverty, have managed to raise over seventy thousand dollars for the provision of foundations for the newly planned church there. Hearts were melted among us by all we experienced. On my return, I resumed work on my poetry, invigorated by all that I experienced there. The format of Poems of Conviction: Volume 5 remains the same, and once again, all proceeds from the sales of these books will go directly to brightening up the lives of the children of Ethiopia. If you have purchased a copy, I offer my heartfelt thanks on their behalf. God Bless.

Book excerpt: Some may come as tourists, to take in all the sights, Some may make a scheduled stop, then board connecting flights, Some may come on business, to tie up some loose ends, But I thank God we're the lucky ones, for we come just as friends. The lure of Ethiopia has called to me again, As I leave behind the Emerald Isle, with all it's wind and rain. To meet with those I've come to love, too numerous to list. But most of all the children, it's the little ones I've missed, If love was ever captured, through God's amazing Grace, I know I'd get to see it, on the smile of every face. They live their lives in poverty, although their free from blame, But the joy we find in all of them, puts us all to shame. A smile from any one of them, could melt the coldest heart, But time goes by so quickly, and all too soon we must depart. But when it comes our time to leave, we'll leave them with our prayer That God will watch and guard them all, and keep them in His care...Amen.

But we managed to survive it, and we gave a huge hurrah, As quickly we descended into Addis Ababa. Then there was immigration, such a real chaotic scene, It has to be the very worst, of all places I have been. But eventually we got through it, and we met the morning Sun, Now to see the children, now to have some fun. But first there were the cases, fifty odd or so, All to be accounted for, before we got to go. But eventually we made it, and off we set at last, Next stop please Kuriftu, and driver make it fast. We took in all the scenery, every road and field and street, But still we were impatient as the children we could meet. We drove up to the compound and they opened up the gate, Our adventure was about to start, thanks to God who's truly Great. We got to share in worship, met again with many friends, Hoped, and prayed with all our hearts, this journey never ends. But best of all the children, for they made our trip worthwhile, For nothing beats the pleasure, when you see the children smile, The time we had was precious; every minute filled with glee, And I have to thank the Lord above for sharing it with me. The memory is indelible; its sun will never set, Something to be treasured that I never will forget . . . amen. These poems were written with the objective of raising much needed funds for the magnificent work carried out by the Hope for Ethiopia Team at Whitewell Metropolitan Tabernacle in Belfast. All proceeds from the sale of this book will go to brightening up the lives of the children there. God Bless.

Book excerpt: Don’t write about ideas… Write about convictions of the heart - Leonard Cohen John Holgerson's, Convictions of the Heart leans in, to the muses of place and memory. Many of the poems, written in and (often) about time spent on the Greek Island of Hydra are infused with languor matched with a sensual aliveness. Holgerson is at his best when gathering the fine details of the senses into scenes that make us want to sit in a certain taverna beneath an arbor or traverse a particular solitary path where we may stumble on the ghost of Leonard Cohen. Other poems reach across decades, reminding us that "then and now [are] married forever/strong and fragile as the/small and resolute red apple stem." Auguries come from odd places-wistfulness is allowed-some loves last. MIRIAM O'NEAL, author of The Body Dialogues

Pierre Joris's selections from the remarkable, heart-shattering work provide what is surely the best one-volume introduction to Celan ever published in English."--Paul Auster "No twentieth-century poet pierces the heart of language with such an exquisite blade as Paul Celan. Celan's charred radiance shines through every page."--Richard Sieburth, translator of Hymns and Fragments

Life cannot be made complicated for meager extra comfort and happiness. Looking at life with the inner eyes, and then implementing those thoughts in poetic form has prompted the writer to write this book. Imaginations occur in mind, or we can make them occur, if we really wish to. Day-to-day life in particular along with love and reality is the theme that the author has utilized in rhythmic as well as verse form of poetry. Writing survives with the existence of readers. We all can express our views on endless matters without any obligation. The space, the writer has, is also available for the readers, which exist life-long. keeping in mind this very similarity in writer and reader, this writer has been able to create this book.

Book excerpt: “A true classic of world literature . . . A masterpiece that has inspired generations of writers in Nigeria, across Africa, and around the world.” —Barack Obama “African literature is incomplete and unthinkable without the works of Chinua Achebe.” —Toni Morrison Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read Things Fall Apart is the first of three novels in Chinua Achebe's critically acclaimed African Trilogy. It is a classic narrative about Africa's cataclysmic encounter with Europe as it establishes a colonial presence on the continent. Told through the fictional experiences of Okonkwo, a wealthy and fearless Igbo warrior of Umuofia in the late 1800s, Things Fall Apart explores one man's futile resistance to the devaluing of his Igbo traditions by British political andreligious forces and his despair as his community capitulates to the powerful new order. With more than 20 million copies sold and translated into fifty-seven languages, Things Fall Apart provides one of the most illuminating and permanent monuments to African experience. Achebe does not only capture life in a pre-colonial African village, he conveys the tragedy of the loss of that world while broadening our understanding of our contemporary realities.

Book excerpt: Confident in his use of Christian icons, nothing is 'sacred' to Paul Stubbs who is as prepared to write as God and Pope as he is Adam (and Eve). Using paintings by Francis Bacon as their starting points, these poems delve into baroque realms of psychological and philosophical thought, filling the unknown with urgent possibility. To each neo-operatic poem he brings wit and classical knowledge to build a singular and aesthetic passion. Yet throughout the landscape of these poems, there are reminders of the business of living with pain, desire and faith. This is not a book for the faint-hearted, but those who enter will be well rewarded, emerging with a renewed conviction of their own choices in viewing the world and our construction of it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enter the world of Ken The Pen. He was convicted of bank robbery, and spent almost 3 years in the New Jersey Department of Corrections, after a drug-fueled 2015 bank robbery spree in Newark, New Jersey.Ken The Pen is a moniker for Ken Stassa, alias Kenneth Strassa. While an inmate, Kenneth Strassa wrote these poems, in the form of emails, and sent them directly to his brother, Rick Stassa. All these poems were typed from a noisy, crowded, and hostile prison dayroom kiosk, deemed the "Chaos," as it was the reason for many fights. Like the phone, it was a daily ritual of getting in line to use either. These 40 emails (poems) have been preserved without any editing or transcription. They all have a specific date and time while Kenneth Strassa was incarcerated from 2017 - 2020. These rare pieces of art are priceless in their original form. With the aid of only a dictionary, since other literary tools are sparse, these uncut gems of intellect were carved out mental anguish, loneliness, and despair. These poems will rivet your soul, and change your perspective on life, love, and suffering with human resolve and Godly intervention. With a full measure of poetic license, some spelling and grammar errors, Ken The Pen steers the reader into crisp philosophical and spiritual insight when battling adversity. This nonfiction narrative is documented with pictures and legal paperwork. These poems are all factual in content. "Now go inside the vault and open your safe deposit box with a key from Ken The Pen."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1988, shortly after moving from Sydney back to his birthplace in the rural New South Wales hamlet of Bunyah, Les Murray was struck with depression. In the months that followed, the "Black Dog" (as he calls it) ruled his life. He raged at his wife and children. He ducked a parking ticket on grounds of insanity, and begged a police officer to shoot him rather than arrest him. For days on end he lay in despair, a state in which, as he puts it precisely, "you feel beneath help." Killing the Black Dog is Murray's recollection of those awful days: brief, pointed, wise, and full of beauty in the way of his poetry. The prose text—delicately balanced between personal and informative—gives a glimpse of the imprint that depression can leave on a life. The accompanying poems show their roots in his crisis—a crisis from which, he reports toward the close of this poignant book, he has fully recovered. "My thinking is no longer jammed and sooty with resentment," he recalls. "I no longer wear only stretch-knit clothes and drawstring pants. I no longer come down with bouts of weeping or reasonless exhaustion. And I no longer seek rejection in a belief that only bitterly conceded praise is reliable." Killing the Black Dog is a crucial chapter in the life of an outstanding poet.
