Book excerpt: The rugged landscapes and hardy living of the Old West find vivid evocation in this superb anthology by the famed cowboy poet Charles Badger Clark. Many of the poems eloquently recall places famed for their role in old west life such as the rolling plains and farms host to great herds of livestock. Herding and driving cattle and other animals on horseback across the vast prairielands was the work of the cowboy; during evenings and breaks in the shade these men would sing songs about their daily life, the sights seen and tough jobs accomplished amid scenes of boundless nature. Charles Badger Clark was one of the most celebrated cowboy poets of his generation. Born in Iowa in 1883, from a young age he demonstrated a great knack for penning evocative verse. Much of his writing is treasured for depicting the slang and quirks of speech peculiar to the cowboys, offering readers authentic glimpses of a lifestyle lost to time. Decades after his death Clark was inducted into Oklahoma's revered Hall of Great Westerners for his contributions to the culture. This reprinting of Sun and Saddle Leather is based upon the expanded fifth edition, which dates to 1920.

Book excerpt: As a pastor of Mountain Top Cowboy Church I have discovered that there is little material designed specifically for cowboy churches or cowboy ministries. Although I have been in the ministry for 14 years I had never considered writing a book however the Lord had other plans. In October of 2009 I broke my leg while competing at a 40 and over bull riding which required surgery. I do not believe that it was God's plan for me to ride a bull at the age of 46 but this book is an example that the Lord will use every situation we are in for good if we will allow Him to use us. During my time of recovery I started writing poems and short stories about my rodeo days then it turned to cowboy poetry. In the beginning it was a way to pass the time and deal with my situation. As I continued to write I began to relate my poems to scripture and it was then that the Lord truly began to use them to reach others. After sharing a few with my church I discovered that they could be a useful tool in cowboy churches and ministries or those in the western culture. This book of poems and proverbs is just another example of the Lord's Grace and Mercy in my life; it is because of His love that I am On The Trail

In the mornings as I would leave to work I would see this pair of eagles above in their nest in a tree. At night when I got home I wouldn’t see them, but just before dark they would fly over the camper I was staying in. I always liked to think they were watching over me.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this provocative and thoughtful anthology, many voices join in illuminating the remarkably vast and varied American West. The verse collected here ranges from American Indian tribal poems to old folk songs like “The Streets of Laredo,” from country-western lyrics to the work of such foreign poets as Bertolt Brecht and Zbigniew Herbert. Here is the West in all its rich variety–the harsh life of farms and ranches; man’s destructive invasion into forest and desert solitudes; the bars and bistros of San Francisco and Hollywood; Pacific surf and endless highways; the ghost towns, the poverty, and the legendary world of cowpunchers and gunslingers. From Robert Frost’s “Once by the Pacific” to Charles Bukowski’s “Vegas,” from Fred Koller’s “Lone Star State of Mind” to Thom Gunn’s “San Francisco Streets”–the West is evoked in all its incarnations, both actual and mythic.

Love stories to the land, to the past, to the present, to the future, to animals, to tracks in the sand, to hidden seep springs in deep canyons, to witches in the night, to wild grapes and longing, to campfires. But more than anything, they are love stories about work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some people are like monarch butterflies—solitary by nature, on a passionate search for somewhere. Critically acclaimed songwriter Courtney Marie Andrews presents her first poetry collection. This poetry collection reads like a transformation, me, the narrator, being the figurative Old Monarch. Documenting this journey, the book is separated into three sections, "Sonoran Milkweed," "Longing In Flight," and "Eucalyptus Tree (My Arrival to Rest)." In the first stage of my journey, I explore my childhood in Arizona, and the naive assumptions of youth. At this stage in my journey, I am impressionable, seeing the world with all its nuances for the first time. Through the landscape of the Sonoran Desert, I explore some dark family dynamics and what a child sees. Several characters turn up in the early poems including my cowboy grandpa, and the single mother who raised me, despite many forthcomings. The early poems also explore my desire to see a brighter world of possibility beyond the dusty desert island, and see humans more clearly within the confounds of discovery. In the second stage, I have left home. I am falling in love for the first time, as I become a young woman. Finally, the last stage is the old monarch's arrival to the garden. There are a lot of metaphysical and philosophical poems in this section. I arrive at the figurative garden, and I finally understand the journey at the edge of my life. There are a lot of poems in the context of a garden here, accepting mortality and the ever-changing world. These are meant to be wise old woman poems.

Book excerpt: Tales of the America's Old (and New) West ala Zane Grey and Louis L'Amour are resurrected in pithy, lyrical poems by Cowboy Poet extraordinaire Robert R. Brown in Who Gets to Ride. Brown's characters range from hard-nosed town marshal Pete Smith to practical and beautiful pioneer women, hapless yokels, hardscrabble cowboys and sylph-like Comanche warriors who make their turn on the stage of America's vast western spaces. Gunfights, brawls, whiskey, horses, grit and love color these dramatic, poignant and whimsical poems that call us back to the spirited, strong folk that shaped -- and continue to shape -- the American West.

Book excerpt: Dani Putney's debut poetry collection, SALAMAT SA INTERSECTIONALITY, is a lyrical triptych that traces the evolution of the speaker's identity as a queer, non-binary, mixed-race Filipinx, and neurodivergent individual. Each "panel" of the speaker's life represents a distinct period of growth: a youthful beginning, which features important interactions with the speaker's parents; a sexually charged middle period that demonstrates the speaker's explorations of queer sexuality; and a contemplative third section wherein the speaker reckons with their various "selves." Imagery of the American West percolates through the collection to ground the speaker in their intersectional identity.
