Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This poetry collection originates from a tour taken to the Central American country of Costa Rica. Instead of doing the usual tourist thing and snapping pictures, I carried a spiral notebook and ball point pen and jotted down impressions in poetic form as I went. The poems that resulted encompass people, places and things, though not intended as a detailed travelogue. What you will get is another perspective on the philosophy and business of travel, the types of tourists that participate in it, and the people that lead it.

Latino/Latina Studies. Translated from the Spanish by Keith Ekiss, Sonia P. Ticas & Mauricio Espinoza. "Travelers to Costa Rica often depart the capital of San José as soon as they arrive, heading out for the cloud forest of Monteverde, the volcano at Arenal, or the waves at Playa Tamarindo, leaving behind the smell of diesel fumes and the city's concrete architecture. But if you visit the National Theater, a civic treasure modeled on the Paris Opera, you will find a bronze statue guarding the building, the bust of a woman with a fierce, penetrating gaze, and hair of Medusa--like serpents: the mother of Costa Rican verse and the country's most significant international literary presence, Nuestra Eunice, as she's been called, the poet Eunice Odio. Her poetry has thus remained almost wholly unknown to readers outside Latin America, obscured on the margins of the region's avant-garde and proletarian-poet traditions. A woman poet who lived a secluded life, Odio was born in a country with, at the time, an antipathy to artists and writers, who often relocated to Mexico City if they wanted to establish themselves as contributors to the vanguard. Odio herself was aware of her marginalized, self-exiled position. Octavio Paz once told her that she was "of that line of poets who invent their own mythology, like Blake, like St. John Perse, like Ezra Pound; and they are rubbed out, because no one understands them until years or even centuries after their death."--Keith Ekiss, from the Introduction

Latin American Studies. Translated from the Spanish by Keith Ekiss, Sonia P. Ticas, and Mauricio Espinoza. Eunice Odio published her epic poem THE FIRE'S JOURNEY (El transito de fuego) in 1957, and it is now available in English translation for the first time. A much-neglected masterpiece of 20th-century Latin American poetry, the poem imagines the world as the word of God. Using a mixture of surrealism, narrative, and dialogue, the story follows the journey of Ion, the poet-god who enters the universe to battle the Void, the force of chaos that threatens to cast the world into darkness. Drawing on traditions from Genesis to Paradise Lost, Odio's THE FIRE'S JOURNEY is a poem about the sacred power of language and the fate of the poet in the world. Tavern Books will publish the entirety of THE FIRE'S JOURNEY in four volumes.

A combination of mystical elements merged with the surreal, combined with the historical, mixed with the philosophical. The attempt has been made to explore our world and the solar system's above us that accomplishes this using an out of body experience that makes us into spiritual Peeping Toms. As the collection proceeds the main spirit (or, you may call it the main character) evolves from a benign being who acts as the observer into a major dictator of historical events and personalities from the past to the present with the goal of transforming the living world into a dream worthy of paradise. The style used here is a combination of American BEAT suffused with American jazz that is inoculated with eastern Sufism and blended into a freestyle and freewheeling mix. The writing never pretends to obey the verdicts of English grammar or the movement of proper composition that comes out of the Victorian age. In the view of this author, life is too short to worry about the conventions that are based on time-tested models that have tarnished in the hot sun over centuries.. Instead of conventions that dictate, the write just has to feel it, do it, play it, paint it as dictated by the soul. This I have tried mercifully to do.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than write a formal memoir, I have created a series of poems that encapsulate my life in thought and body. The collection is a personal discourse with people known during my life, as well as my reflections on self and the world outside my body. I devised predetermined chapters. When a poem came to me, I placed it, banged it out, and randomly moved on to the next. This way, I was able to complete hundreds of poems relatively quickly. Here are the finalized chapters: Familiar In The Family; Relations Had Without Relations; Worldly Issues. Soulful Conceptions; Autobiographical Bits Of Flesh; Older Aging Insights; Natural World Incinerations; Jazz In The Words; Moments In Time; Places In The Mind. While I attempted to be as inclusive as possible, I fell short. The effort to incorporate every moment of proved too difficult. Still I am proud of the attempt and I do think I managed to capture the essence of my entire existence. Enjoy the poems.

Your birth happens more than once so sink into each feeling of uncertainty and ride with the waves. From loneliness, fear, and change comes a breathtaking collection of poetry that inspires strength and self-healing during a time when we couldn’t feel farther apart. What the Moon Gave Her is a poetry collection born from self-discovery. The debut collection from Christi Steyn delves into themes of self-doubt, anxiety, and the unprecedented loss felt during the height of the pandemic. Beauty is found in every corner of this book's six dynamic chapters––"birth by the ocean", “you plucked too many petals," “how to grow wings,” "dancing dolphins,” "full moon/bloom" and "two trees intertwined" What the Moon Gave Her is a moving collection about rebirth and the way we reconnect with the world around us through love.

Book excerpt: A classic poem with a timeless message, presented in a small and beautiful gift book. Rose Milligan never intended to publicly share her poem 'Dust If You Must', but a series of events led her to publish it in The Lady magazine in 1998. Her charming message about what we value in life resonated with audiences, and it has since been read on BBC radio, posted on Instagram, printed on tea towels, read at funerals and put to music. Now appearing as a book for the first time, beautifully illustrated throughout by illustrator Hayley Wells, Dust If You Must is a timeless reminder to focus on the things we can enjoy in the world, rather than the things we think we need to do.
