Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems Translations: Including Dante's Vita Nuova the Early Italian PoetsThere is a pleasant tradition, not indeed susceptible of conclusive proof, but supported by a fair amount of indirect evidence, that Chaucer in 1373 met Petrarch at Padua. In any case, Troilus and Criseyde, the House of Fame, and the Canterbury Tales mark the beginning of the literary relations between England and Italy; relations which have continued, almost uninterruptedly, down to the present day, although naturally more close and intimate at some periods than at others. The poetry and prose of our early Tudor and Elizabethan age drew copious and noble inspiration from Italian sources; the poetry and prose of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century in Italy, the epoch that preceded and heralded the Risorgimento, exemplified in Monti and Manzoni, were considerably influenced by English models. Literature has been one of the many links in the chain of gold that has bound the two nations together; but, in this respect at least, England has received immeasurably more than she has given. The gift of the land of Dante to the land of Shakespeare culminated in the nineteenth century, when, in the children of her exiled poet and patriot, Gabriele Rossetti (who escaped from Naples in a British ship and settled in London in 1824), Italy gave us two great poets: Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) and Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830-1894); two great poets who, if mainly English in their art, were three-fourths Italian in blood. It is impossible to dissociate Dante Gabriel Rossetti in our thoughts from the supreme poet whose name he so worthily bore. He wrote of himself: "The first associations I have are connected with my father's devoted studies, which, from his own point of view, have done so much towards the general investigation of Dante's writings. Thus, in those early days, all around me partook of the influence of the great Florentine; till, from viewing it as a natural element, I also, growing older, was drawn within the circle."About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: In La Vita Nuova, Italy's greatest poet recounts the famous story of his passionate love for Beatrice. The drama of their relationship unravels through stunning poetry and prose in this, one of the most celebrated love stories in history. Part of the Macmillan Collector’s Library; a series of stunning, clothbound, pocket-sized classics with gold foiled edges and ribbon markers. These beautiful books make perfect gifts or a treat for any book lover. From the first time the poet sets eyes on Beatrice, he proclaims that ‘love quite governed my soul’ and his devotion to her knows no end. By recalling each meeting with Beatrice this short book is at once a heartfelt account of youthful love and a religious allegory. La Vita Nuova serves as an important precursor to Dante’s masterpiece, The Divine Comedy. This edition is the English translation by Dante Gabriel Rossetti from the original Italian. It was first published in The Early Italian Poets in 1861 and then reissued in 1874 by Dante and his circle. It was met with great acclaim acknowledging Rossetti’s skill as a meticulous and poetic translator.

Book excerpt: A sparkling translation that gives new life in English to Dante’s Vita Nuova, his transcendent love poems and influential statement on the art and power of poetry, and the most widely read of his works after the Inferno A Penguin Classic Dante was only nine years old when he first met young Beatrice in Florence. Loving her for the rest of his life with a devotion undiminished by even her untimely death, he would dedicate himself to transfiguring her, through poetry, into something far more than a muse—she would become the very proof of love as transcendent spiritual power, and the adoration of her a radiant path into a “new life.” Censored by the Church, written in the Tuscan vernacular rather than Latin, exploding the courtly love tradition of the medieval troubadours, and employing an unprecedented hybrid form to link the thirty-one poems with prose commentary, Vita Nuova, first published in 1294, represents both an innovation in the literature of love and the work of Dante’s that brings this extraordinary poet into clearest view. This limpid new translation, based on the latest authoritative Italian edition and featuring the Italian on facing pages, captures the ineffable quality of a work that has inspired the likes of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Charles Baudelaire, T. S. Eliot, Jorge Luis Borges, Robert Penn Warren, and Louise Glück, and sustains the long afterlife of a masterpiece that is itself a key to the ultimate poetic journey into the afterlife, The Divine Comedy. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Poets Chiefly Before Dante; Part II. Dante and His Circle That there are many defects in these translations, or that the above merit is their defect, or that they have no merits but only defects, are discoveries so sure to be made if necessary (or perhaps here and there in any case), that I may safely leave them in other hands. The collection has probably a wider scope than some readers might look for, and includes now and then (though I believe in rare instances) matter which may not meet with universal approval; and whose introduction, needed as it is by the literary aim of my work, is I know inconsistent with the principles of pretty bookmaking. My wish has been to give a full and truthful view of early Italian poetry; not to make it appear to consist only of certain elements to the exclusion of others equally belonging to it. Book excerpt: This celebration of the poet's passionate love for his immortal Beatrice weaves together rapturous sonnets and canzoni with prose commentaries and an autobiographical narrative. A predecessor to The Divine Comedy, La Vita Nuova (The New Life) also serves as an ever-relevant treatise on the art and technique of poetry.
