People more knowledgeable and competent than the author have discussed the psychological and social wounds, and she has even described her own long circuitous journey in another volume. It also attempts to give hope to anyone else who has been affected by childhood abuse, especially when they recognize the spirit is the core of their being and can only be healed on a spiritual level. Rising From the Ashes attempts to demonstrate this progress by using the theme of seasons. A season is cyclical and so is healing. No, the victim goes through many stages, often many times with the same issue. It is the same with spiritual healing. Trust is wounded on so many levels, but healing is possible and it is a wonderful journey when one can finally look back on it and see how God has really been with you all the way, even in the dark days when you cannot see or believe anything. Rising From the Ashes is a compilation from many poems over the years to illustrate the slow steady progress of one woman’s spiritual life encapsulated in a year of seasons. In one’s own life, if you can get through the dark times, you can see the silver lining. So, too, if you can get past the early dark poems of the book, you will arrive at that wonder-filled place where poems are filled with a sense of freedom and joy. The hope is that you will be able to see your own spiritual journey somehow reflected in its verses.

In general terms, the separate ego state is focused primarily on the external reality while the spiritual is more focused on internal consciousness. Perhaps another way of explaining this spiritual awakening is recognizing the shift from the rational mind to heart consciousness. The way in which the poems of this collection are arranged is an attempt to make this shift obvious. Through the practice of forgiveness and the awareness of love, the separate self of the ego begins to lose its hold, allowing the awareness of the larger self to become the focus of attention. This awareness heals the separation of self from others and the Divine. Ultimately the awareness of the unitary nature of existence becomes known. The fear of death and its resolution are prominent concerns of many of the poems. The need to face the reality of death and understand it in a meaningful way is one of the basic learning explored by the poetry.
