Book Synopsis The History of Literature in Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasty by : Li Shi
Download or read book The History of Literature in Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasty written by Li Shi and published by DeepLogic. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is the volume of “The History of Literature in Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasty” among a series of books of “Deep into China Histories”. The earliest known written records of the history of China date from as early as 1250 BC, from the Shang dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BC) and the Bamboo Annals (296 BC) describe a Xia dynasty (c. 2070–1600 BC) before the Shang, but no writing is known from the period The Shang ruled in the Yellow River valley, which is commonly held to be the cradle of Chinese civilization. However, Neolithic civilizations originated at various cultural centers along both the Yellow River and Yangtze River. These Yellow River and Yangtze civilizations arose millennia before the Shang. With thousands of years of continuous history, China is one of the world's oldest civilizations, and is regarded as one of the cradles of civilization. The Zhou dynasty (1046–256 BC) supplanted the Shang and introduced the concept of the Mandate of Heaven to justify their rule. The central Zhou government began to weaken due to external and internal pressures in the 8th century BC, and the country eventually splintered into smaller states during the Spring and Autumn period. These states became independent and warred with one another in the following Warring States period. Much of traditional Chinese culture, literature and philosophy first developed during those troubled times. In 221 BC Qin Shi Huang conquered the various warring states and created for himself the title of Huangdi or "emperor" of the Qin, marking the beginning of imperial China. However, the oppressive government fell soon after his death, and was supplanted by the longer-lived Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD). Successive dynasties developed bureaucratic systems that enabled the emperor to control vast territories directly. In the 21 centuries from 206 BC until AD 1912, routine administrative tasks were handled by a special elite of scholar-officials. Young men, well-versed in calligraphy, history, literature, and philosophy, were carefully selected through difficult government examinations. China's last dynasty was the Qing (1644–1912), which was replaced by the Republic of China in 1912, and in the mainland by the People's Republic of China in 1949.Chinese history has alternated between periods of political unity and peace, and periods of war and failed statehood – the most recent being the Chinese Civil War (1927–1949). China was occasionally dominated by steppe peoples, most of whom were eventually assimilated into the Han Chinese culture and population. Between eras of multiple kingdoms and warlordism, Chinese dynasties have ruled parts or all of China; in some eras control stretched as far as Xinjiang and Tibet, as at present. Traditional culture, and influences from other parts of Asia and the Western world (carried by waves of immigration, cultural assimilation, expansion, and foreign contact), form the basis of the modern culture of China.
Book Synopsis CLASSIC BRITISH POETRY by : Industrial Systems Research
Download or read book CLASSIC BRITISH POETRY written by Industrial Systems Research and published by Industrial Systems Research. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ISR Modernized Poetic Masterpieces series – beautifully readable modern prose translations of renowned verses from the 14th to the 19th centuries Classic poems are priceless cultural artifacts – on par with great books, paintings, musical compositions, and films. They help communicate the beliefs, values, and experiences of people from bygone eras. They provide insights into different times, places, and circumstances that resonate even today. Classic verses not only connect us to the general cultures of countries but also the diverse attitudes and opinions of individuals within those cultural contexts. Nonetheless, understanding such verses can be challenging because of archaic words, outdated grammar, or complex and unconventional syntax. This book presents around 800 significant British poems dating from the Middle Ages to late Victorian times modernized in prose format to improve their readability and understandability. By definition, classic poems have garnered much acclaim over the years. They may have excelled in capturing the essence of individual emotions or made observations and comments in remarkably vibrant ways. Overall, this anthology represents a diverse group of authors with some extraordinary abilities and insights into nature, individuals, society, politics, and a range of other matters. In the NATURE chapter, the collection includes outstanding poems from luminaries such as William Wordsworth, John Keats, and Percy Bysshe Shelley. It also features many less-known writers who have drawn inspiration from the awe-inspiring beauty, changing seasons, and landscapes of the natural world. After nature, LOVE AND ROMANCE has been another perennially important theme in British poetry. The anthology features poems by William Shakespeare, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and many others on the intense yearnings, hopes, and sorrows of lovers. Relations with nature and experiences of love, rejection, health, and DEATH AND MORTALITY are major sources of human HAPPINESS AND SORROW. Many poets have explored these subjects – often connecting them with SPIRITUALITY AND RELIGION. From Chaucer and Milton to Wordsworth and Gray, writers have fearlessly confronted significant SOCIAL AND POLITICAL concerns. They have spoken about rights and freedoms, tyranny, justice and injustice, and the nature and causes of WAR AND CONFLICT. British poetry has featured many captivating stories about individual courage and moral problems, hope, love, and the triumphing of good over evil. Finally, poets have often found inspiration in MYTHOLOGY AND FOLKLORE. They have used ancient tales, legends, and folklore as foundations for fresh stories and commentaries on contemporary themes. Some verses blend multiple styles. Individual writers have developed new genres and experimented with novel lyric forms and content materials. Nonetheless, certain great themes and preoccupations have remained remarkably consistent in poetic literature over the centuries.
Book Synopsis Colonizing the Realm of Words by : Sascha Ebeling
Download or read book Colonizing the Realm of Words written by Sascha Ebeling and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2010-09-28 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A true tour de force, this book documents the transformation of one Indian literature, Tamil, under the impact of colonialism and Western modernity. While Tamil is a living language, it is also India's second oldest classical language next to Sanskrit, and has a literary history that goes back over two thousand years. On the basis of extensive archival research, Sascha Ebeling tackles a host of issues pertinent to Tamil elite literary production and consumption during the nineteenth century. These include the functioning and decline of traditional systems in which poet-scholars were patronized by religious institutions, landowners, and local kings; the anatomy of changes in textual practices, genres, styles, poetics, themes, tastes, and audiences; and the role of literature in the politics of social reform, gender, and incipient nationalism. The work concludes with a discussion of the most striking literary development of the time—the emergence of the Tamil novel.

Book Synopsis The Origins of Wizards, Witches and Fairies by : Simon Webb
Download or read book The Origins of Wizards, Witches and Fairies written by Simon Webb and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Webb takes what we know about these magical beings via pop culture and explores their origins and how their respective images have changed over time.” —The Portalist This book tells the fascinating story of the origin of our ideas about wizards, witches, and fairies. We all have a clear mental image of the pointed hats worn by such individuals, which are based upon actual headgear dating back 3,000 years to the Bronze Age. Carefully sifting through old legends, archaeological evidence, and modern research in genetics, Simon Webb shows us how our notions about fairies and elves, together with human workers of magic, have evolved over the centuries. This exploration of folklore, backed by the latest scientific findings, will present readers with the image of a lost world; the one used as the archetype for fantasy adventures from The Lord of the Rings to Game of Thrones. In the process, the real nature of wizards will be revealed, and their connection with the earliest European cultures thoroughly documented. After reading this book, nobody will ever be able to view Gandalf the wizard in the same light and even old fairy tales such as “Beauty and the Beast” will take on a richer and deeper meaning. In short, our perception of wizards, witches and fairies will be altered forever.
Book Synopsis Far Beyond the Field by : Makoto Ueda
Download or read book Far Beyond the Field written by Makoto Ueda and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far Beyond the Field is a first-of-its-kind anthology of haiku by Japanese women, collecting translations of four hundred haiku written by twenty poets from the seventeenth century to the present. By arranging the poems chronologically, Makoto Ueda has created an overview of the way in which this enigmatic seventeen-syllable form has been used and experimented with during different eras. At the same time, the reader is admitted to the often marginalized world of female experience in Japan, revealing voices every bit as rich and colorful, and perhaps even more lyrical and erotic, than those found in male haiku. Listen, for instance, to Chiyojo, who worked in what has been long thought of as the dark age of haiku during the eighteenth century, but who composed exquisitely fine poems tracing the smallest workings of nature. Or Katsuro Nobuko, who wrote powerfully erotic poems when she was widowed after only two years of marriage. And here, too, is a voice from today, Mayuzumi Madoka, whose meditations on romantic love represent a fresh new approach to haiku.
