Book excerpt: “Poemas en Tránsito” is a poetry book narrating my personal experiences, as I commute to work in the number 1 Train, which runs from 242nd Street in the Bronx to Battery Park, in Manhattan. In the poems, I use the kaleidoscope of sounds, visuals and people in the subway to relate some of my experiences. In its totality, the book is a compendium of poems selected from my poetic production starting in 1976, under the guidance of my illustrious and respected, Professor Jaime Montesinos. His intellectual infl uence and guidance were the midwives of this book.

Download or read book Negras in Brazil written by Kia Caldwell and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-05 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of the twentieth century, Brazil was widely regarded as a "racial democracy"-a country untainted by the scourge of racism and prejudice. In recent decades, however, this image has been severely critiqued, with a growing number of studies highlighting persistent and deep-seated patterns of racial discrimination and inequality. Yet, recent work on race and racism has rarely considered gender as part of its analysis. In Negras in Brazil, Kia Lilly Caldwell examines the life experiences of Afro-Brazilian women whose stories have until now been largely untold. This pathbreaking study analyzes the links between race and gender and broader processes of social, economic, and political exclusion. Drawing on ethnographic research with social movement organizations and thirty-five life history interviews, Caldwell explores the everyday struggles Afro-Brazilian women face in their efforts to achieve equal rights and full citizenship. She also shows how the black women's movement, which has emerged in recent decades, has sought to challenge racial and gender discrimination in Brazil. While proposing a broader view of citizenship that includes domains such as popular culture and the body, Negras in Brazil highlights the continuing relevance of identity politics for members of racially marginalized communities. Providing new insights into black women's social activism and a gendered perspective on Brazilian racial dynamics, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Latin American Studies, African diaspora studies, women's studies, politics, and cultural anthropology.

Book Synopsis A Postcolonial Ulysses in the Lusophone World by : Lisandra Silva e Sousa

This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'Portuguese Ulyssism' (Gilberto Freyre's concept referring to Luís Vaz de Camões's epic and the Portuguese maritime voyage in the Renaissance) is an axial cultural construct, which this work partially absorbs but also departs from, to assert mutating literary experiences referring to the Camonean version of the myth in the epic Os Lusíadas/The Lusiads. Vaz de Camões's epic describes Vasco da Gama's voyage to India and his encounters with numerous obstacles and hardships in the New World, thus relocating Homer's The Illiad and The Odyssey, and, in particular, Virgil's The Aeneid. In it, the myth of Ulysses combines with the subject of Portuguese colonial dispersal throughout the world in the Renaissance to form the focus of Camões's epic, whose characters are split into two archetypes: Ulysses - nationals with diasporic identities - and the Old Man of Restelo, who represents the arguments of the settled identities of the nation against the ambitions of a Portuguese global diaspora. This research revisits the Camonean dialogue with Homer and Virgil in the context of the Portuguese colonial dispersal in the Renaissance to suggest a postcolonial Ulysses in the Lusophone world"--

Book excerpt: Identifying the stage as a primary site for erotic display, these essays take eroticism in Renaissance culture as a paradigm for issues of sexuality and identity in early modern culture. Contributors examine how the Renaissance stage functioned as a decoder for erotic experience, both reinforcing and subverting expected sexual behaviour. They argue that the dynamics of theatrical eroticism served to deconstruct gender definitions, leaving conventional categories of sexuality blurred, confused - or absent. In seeking to reposition the conventions and subversions of gender and desire in terms of one another, these essays open up an attractive and distinctive perspective in cultural debate.
