Book Synopsis Urban Policy in Latin America by : Michael Cohen
Download or read book Urban Policy in Latin America written by Michael Cohen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evaluates the impact of 20 years of urban policies in six Latin American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico. It argues that evaluating the fulfillment of past commitments is essential for framing and meeting the new commitments that were taken in Habitat III over the next 20 years. Taken as a whole, the book provides a critical assessment of the economic, social and environmental consequences of urban interventions during Habitat II. The country-level chapters have been written by recognized experts in urban issues, with first-hand knowledge of the Habitat process, and deep familiarity with the problems, statistics, actors and political contexts of their nations. The latter part of the volume considers wider topics such as the Habitat Commitment Index, the New Urban Agenda and the regional and global-scale lessons that can be extracted from this group of countries. Urban Policy in Latin America will be of interest to advanced students, researchers and policymakers across development economics, urban studies and Latin American studies.

Book Synopsis Women's Right to the City by : Cruz Armando González Izaguirre
Download or read book Women's Right to the City written by Cruz Armando González Izaguirre and published by Nomos Verlag. This book was released on 2019-11-20 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Crisis and Social Regression in Brazil by : Roberto Véras de Oliveira
Download or read book Crisis and Social Regression in Brazil written by Roberto Véras de Oliveira and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book published in English to present a concise but panoramic overview of the social, economic and political roots of the current Brazilian crisis. By situating former president Dilma Rousseff’s impeachment in the wider context of the historical struggle for social rights, citizenship and democracy in the country, the book provides a conceptual framework that will allow foreign readers to better understand the apparent contradiction of a rising regional power that all of a sudden entered in one of the worst economic, social and political crisis of its history. This book will be of interest to a wide range of social scientists (such as sociologists, economists, historians and political scientists) interested in labor and citizenship issues in developing countries like Brazil, as well as for social agents (from the public and private spheres) with practical involvement with such issues, such as trade unionists, leaders and advisors of business organizations, policy-makers, politicians, NGO activists and technicians.

Book Synopsis Psychosocial and Cultural Research on Poverty in Mexico by : Cirilo Humberto García Cadena
Download or read book Psychosocial and Cultural Research on Poverty in Mexico written by Cirilo Humberto García Cadena and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new and timely book deals with the magnitude and the intensity of the poverty in Latin America, Mexico and the state of Nuevo Leon. The enormous and chronic social problems of poverty in 1970 struck approximately 40 per cent of the families of Latin America or 119 million people. In 1990, of 423,913,043 habitants of Latin America, 46 per cent were living in poverty, that is to say, 195 million people were suffering this calamity (CEPAL). According to the same CEPAL, in 2002 44 per cent of the population of Latin America was poor, whereas 19.40 per cent were living in extreme poverty, indigence or misery. Seen in another way, the poverty in Latin America increased in that period of 20 years, from 1970 to 1990, 38.97 per cent. At the moment, in Latin America there are 225 million poor people. This book is an essential reference to a problem which the world must, if for no other reason than necessity, deal with in a vigorous and just manner.

Book Synopsis Informal Sector Innovations by : Mammo Muchie
Download or read book Informal Sector Innovations written by Mammo Muchie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well documented that the space of informal economic activity is rising across the globe. This rise has been particularly significant in the least developed and developing countries, especially after the onset of neo-liberal policies and withdrawal of welfare state. There has also been a shift in academic thinking on informal sector, with attempts being made to understand the contribution of informal sector in generating employment and economic growth rather than focusing solely on exploitative labour conditions in these economic activities. Indeed, with the retreat of welfare state and the introduction of contract labour in the formal sector, many issues related to occupational hazards and improper labour conditions do not remain unique to the informal sectors of the economy, particularly in less developed countries. This volume addresses a specific concern: the issue of knowledge generation and innovative activities, which lies at the core of sustained competitive advantage of these activities. The chapters in this book were originally published in the African Journal of Science Technology Innovation and Development.
