Book excerpt: 'John Owen on the Work of the Holy Spirit', as the work has generally been called, is perhaps one of the best known, and most highly esteemed of Owen's treatises. 'We are favoured with many excellent books in our tongue', wrote John Newton to a correspondent, 'but I with you agree in assigning one of the first places as a teacher to Dr Owen. I have just finished his discourse on the Holy Spirit which is an epitome, if not the masterpiece of his writings.'

Book excerpt: 'Owen on the Holy Spirit', as this work has been known to generations of Christians, was written by the greatest theologian of the Puritan era. It is, without question, one of the truly great Christian books. Originally published in 1674 as Pneumatologia, or A Discourse concerning the Holy Spirit, it is a massive work, taking up 650 pages in the Banner of Truth edition of Owen's Works (Volume 3). It deals with the name, nature, personality and operations of the Spirit, and urges the necessity of gospel holiness as distinct from mere human morality. The work is both doctrinal and pastoral in character. The very length and exhaustiveness of the original book could easily deter us from attempting to read it, but this abridged and modernized version prepared, like the earlier volumes in the series, (Apostasy from the Gospel, Communion with God and The Glory of Christ), by Dr. R. J. K. Law will make Owen's teaching more accessible to modern readers.

Avoiding either a "Spirit-only" or a "Spirit-void" theology, Leopoldo Sánchez carefully crafts a Spirit Christology, which considers the role of God's Spirit in the life and mission of Jesus and leads to five distinct models of sanctification that can help Christians discern how the Spirit is at work in our lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does God bring His Word into our lives? The answer is: by the Holy Spirit. By the Spirit the Word was revealed and written. By the Spirit the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. By the Spirit the Word roots itself in the hearts of sinners and produces fruit. Calvin recognized long ago that the Holy Spirit is the bond of union between believers and Christ. Jonathan Edwards said that the Spirit is the sum of all Christ bought for His people with His precious blood. How precious then is the Spirit, and how important to know Him and His ways! In this book, a team of pastor-theologians uncover the rich biblical teachings about the work of the Holy Spirit. How was the Spirit involved in the human life of Jesus Christ? What is a spiritual person? How does the Spirit open the mind of sinners to trust in Christ? What does it mean to serve God in the power of the Spirit? How does the Spirit’s sovereign work relate to our responsibility in evangelism? These questions and more are addressed in this book. Table of Contents: Part I: Geoff Thomas: A Faithful Instrument of the Spirit 1. Hugh Geoffrey Thomas: A Biographical Appreciation — Gary Brady 2. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Spirit has become an object of greater attention in Trinitarian theology, and indeed in the broader life of the Church, since the rise of Pentecostalism at the beginning of the twentieth century. Different understandings of the Holy Spirit have had different impacts on worship; here, Elizabeth Welch examines four surprising overlaps in the thought of two radically different traditions of the church about the relationship between the Holy Spirit and worship. These traditions are represented by John Owen, from seventeenth-century England, and John Zizioulas, from contemporary Greece. Welch explores in turn the common themes of the personal and relational nature of the triune God, the immediacy of the encounter with God through the Holy Spirit in worship, the role of the Holy Spirit in leading people into truth, and the transformative nature of worship that draws people into sharing God's purpose for the world. In each, the insights of Owen and Zizioulas shed new light on the ongoing debate in the Church today.

Book excerpt: With Jesus takes us on a tour through Jesus' life to show us how we can find our place in the story of Christ. Christianity is not a only a faith founded on facts, but also a deeply personal experience of God's transforming grace in Christ. While our hope is rooted in history—the events of Jesus' life, death, resurrection, and ascension—the Scriptures also teach that every believer is included in these events. From the manger to the cross, from the empty tomb to his glorious throne, Jesus acted for us. And the mystery and wonder of the gospel is that we are crucified, buried, raised, and seated with him. The story of Jesus rewrites our stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contemporary Christianity, there seems to be no common ground regarding the view of the baptism of the Holy Spirit between the two major streams of today, namely the Pentecostal and the Reformed Protestant churches. Both appear to be at odds, making it seem almost impossible to find a meeting point in terms of both the concept and practice of the baptism of the Holy Spirit itself. The Holy Spirit indeed works dynamically and actively in this New Testament era, but is it wrong if the Holy Spirit works “a little differently” or “more variably” compared to the time of the Apostles in the first century, as written in the New Testament? Is it true that someone baptized with the Holy Spirit must be marked by speaking in tongues? What are the characteristics of a person baptized with the Holy Spirit? Does a person filled with the Holy Spirit have to speak in tongues? Are the tongues in the book of Acts (Chapter 2 about the day of Pentecost) the same as in 1 Corinthians 12 and 14? Are tongues still present, or have they ceased in today’s times? Is it permissible to speak in tongues during church services? Are tongues meant only for private prayer, or can they also be used in corporate worship? Are manifestations of the Holy Spirit, such as falling to the floor and body trembling, wrong? Can tongues be learned? Is it appropriate to make speaking in tongues a requirement for someone to serve in the church? Is speaking in tongues a sign of a person’s spirituality? What about the other gifts of the Holy Spirit? This book aims to provide a proper understanding of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, offering clear explanations regarding the baptism of the Spirit, speaking in tongues, and other dynamic works of the Holy Spirit in today’s era. This book will inevitably present differences that might raise some debates. However, the goal is not to show which stream is right or wrong but to enrich our perspectives on the baptism of the Holy Spirit itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Fuller (1754-1815) was the leading Baptist theologian of his era, though his works are just now being made available in a critical edition. Strictures on Sandemanianism is the fourth volume in The Works of Andrew Fuller. In this treatise, Fuller critiqued Sandemanianism, a form of Restorationism that first emerged in Scotland in the eighteenth century and was influencing the Scotch Baptists of Fuller's day. Fuller's biggest concern was the Sandemanian belief that saving faith is merely intellectual assent to the gospel. Fuller believed this "intellectualist" view of faith undermined evangelical spirituality. Strictures on Sandemanianism became a leading evangelical critique of Sandemanian views. This critical edition will introduce scholars to this important work and shed light on evangelical debates about the faith, justification, and sanctification during the latter half of the "long" eighteenth century (ca. 1750 to 1815).
