Book excerpt: Excerpt from North's Translation of Plutarch's Life of Julius Caesar Amyot lost little in truth by his translation and gained everything in charm. It is Surprising, says Mr. Long, to find how correct this Old French translation generally is. Amyot was a man Of great industry and considerable learning. He sought diligently in the libraries Of Rome and Venice for those Lives Of Plutarch which are lost; and though his Search was unsuccessful, it had this great effect, that by comparing the variety of manuscripts he found with the printed copies, he was enabled in many places to rectify the text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plutarch's Lives of Coriolanus, Caesar, Brutus, and Antonius: In North's Translation But it is hardly necessary to observe that, in these days of fondness for Shakespeare's plays and for Shakespearian criticism, it is equally a duty and a privilege to take up North's volume once more, to select from it the most useful biographies, and to print these in a cheap, accessible, and convenient form: for it cannot be denied that the old folio editions are exceedingly cumbrous and unwieldy, containing, as they do, from 1100 to 1250 pages of large-sized paper. Download or read book Plutarch's Lives written by Plutarch and published by . This book was released on 2018-08-26 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This hardcover anthology of Plutarch's biographies boasts an excellent and highly readable translation by two scholars of classical literature. In this volume, we hear Plutarch's accounts of several iconic figures from Greek and Roman antiquity. Nominally arranged according to their moral successes and failings of the individuals concerned, the Lives are a stunning insight into how the figures of antiquity were perceived and chronicled relatively soon after passing into history. Written in the 2nd century A.D., the Lives were distributed en masse following the invention of the printing press in the early Renaissance. As well as being compelling biography, certain accounts of rulers such as Pericles are highly regarded as secondary sources by contemporary historians. In multiple cases, Plutarch compared and contrasted several of his biographical subjects. For instance early in this volume we find comparisons between Theseus and Romulus, wherein their morals, characteristics and actions are examined.
