Book excerpt: This hardbound, coffee-table-size, heirloom quality book contains 565 pages and features 144 photos. The author begins with a framework of regional and national events. Onto this backdrop he weaves a mesmerizing true story of evolving society in a small South Carolina community. Readers experience horrors of the American Revolutionary War, then stability and prosperity in the fabled Cotton Kingdom. The author paints a graphic picture of initial euphoria, followed by privation and suffering, during the brutal American Civil War. The little village prospered thereafter, but disaster struck in the early 1900s. The dreaded boll weevil, demise of the small farmer, death of King Cotton, and Great Depression sucked lifeblood out of the town. Hard times forged unity, and families bonded together. Togetherness honed interpersonal skills and responsible citizenship. When venturing into mainstream America, town natives rose head-and-shoulders above the masses. In the sciences, the arts, the humanities, and the professions they excelled. Most credit their experience in the little town for their many worldly successes. The author weaves a spellbinding story. He uses plats, maps, deeds, letters, photos, and newspaper articles to breathe life into this riveting saga of life in rural America. The mystical lure of the laid-back little village has prompted many former residents to return in their later years. Most agree that their utopian rural home is truly "Heaven in South Carolina."

China is home to both the Siberian and the South China tigers. While both are on the verge of extinction, the small South China tiger still appears as far north as the Chungnan Mountains, where hermits have shown me their tracks." Sung Po-jen was a Chinese poet of the thirteenth century. Red Pine (a.k.a. Bill Porter) is one of the world's foremost translators of Chinese poetry and religious texts. His published translations include The Collected Songs of Cold Mountain, Lao-tzu's Taoteching, and Poems of the Masters. He lives near Seattle, Washington.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The social and economic rise of the chungin class (“middle people” who ranked between the yangban aristocracy and commoners) during the late Chosŏn period (1700–1910) ushered in a world of materialism and commodification of painting and other art objects. Generally overlooked in art history, the chungin contributed to a flourishing art market, especially for ch’aekkori, a new form of still life painting that experimented with Western perspective and illusionism, and a reimagined style of the traditional plum blossom painting genre. Sunglim Kim examines chungin artists and patronage of the visual arts, and their commercial transactions, artistic exchange with China and Japan, and historical writings on art. She also explores the key role of men of chungin background in preserving Korean art heritage in the tumultuous twentieth century, including the work of the modern Korean collector and historian O Se-ch’ang, who memorialized many chungin painters and calligraphers. Revealing a vivid picture of a complex art world,Flowering Plums and Curio Cabinets presents a major reconsideration of late Chosŏn society and its material culture. Lushly illustrated, it will appeal to scholars of Korea and East Asia, art history, visual culture, and social history. A William Sangki and Nanhee Min Hahn Book Art History Publication Initiative. This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frequent appearance of androgyny in Ming and Qing literature has long interested scholars of late imperial Chinese culture. A flourishing economy, widespread education, rising individualism, a prevailing hedonism--all of these had contributed to the gradual disintegration of traditional gender roles in late Ming and early Qing China (1550-1750) and given rise to the phenomenon of androgyny. Now, Zuyan Zhou sheds new light on this important period, offering a highly original and astute look at the concept of androgyny in key works of Chinese fiction and drama from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. The work begins with an exploration of androgyny in Chinese philosophy and Ming-Qing culture. Zhou proceeds to examine chronologically the appearance of androgyny in major literary writing of the time, yielding novel interpretations of canonical works from The Plum in the Golden Vase, through the scholar-beauty romances, to The Dream of the Red Chamber. He traces the ascendance of the androgyny craze in the late Ming, its culmination in the Ming-Qing transition, and its gradual phasing out after the mid-Qing. The study probes deviations from engendered codes of behavior both in culture and literature, then focuses on two parallel areas: androgyny in literary characterization and androgyny in literati identity. The author concludes that androgyny in late Ming and early Qing literature is essentially the dissident literati's stance against tyrannical politics, a psychological strategy to relieve anxiety over growing political inferiority.
