Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century, skin lighteners have been a ubiquitous feature of global popular culture—embraced by consumers even as they were fiercely opposed by medical professionals, consumer health advocates, and antiracist thinkers and activists. In Beneath the Surface, Lynn M. Thomas constructs a transnational history of skin lighteners in South Africa and beyond. Analyzing a wide range of archival, popular culture, and oral history sources, Thomas traces the changing meanings of skin color from precolonial times to the postcolonial present. From indigenous skin-brightening practices and the rapid spread of lighteners in South African consumer culture during the 1940s and 1950s to the growth of a billion-dollar global lightener industry, Thomas shows how the use of skin lighteners and experiences of skin color have been shaped by slavery, colonialism, and segregation as well as by consumer capitalism, visual media, notions of beauty, and protest politics. In teasing out lighteners’ layered history, Thomas theorizes skin as a site for antiracist struggle and lighteners as a technology of visibility that both challenges and entrenches racial and gender hierarchies.

Download or read book Paradise Transplanted written by Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gardens are immobile, literally rooted in the earth, but they are also shaped by migration and by the transnational movement of ideas, practices, plants, and seeds. In Paradise Transplanted, Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo reveals how successive conquests and diverse migrations have made Southern California gardens, and in turn how gardens influence social inequality, work, leisure, status, and our experiences of nature and community. Drawing on historical archival research, ethnography, and over one hundred interviews with a wide range of people including suburban homeowners, paid Mexican immigrant gardeners, professionals at the most elite botanical garden in the West, and immigrant community gardeners in the poorest neighborhoods of inner-city Los Angeles, this book offers insights into the ways that diverse global migrations and garden landscapes shape our social world.

Book Synopsis Giuseppina Pizzigoni's 20th Century Pedagogy of the Kindergarten by : Sandra Chistolini
Download or read book Giuseppina Pizzigoni's 20th Century Pedagogy of the Kindergarten written by Sandra Chistolini and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-08-24 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giuseppina Pizzigoni (1870-1947) was a pioneer of the change in the vision of school education in Italy, and an autonomous interpreter of the impulse of transformation that lies at the origin of the progressive school, the active school, and the new school in Europe and the USA. In 1907, she conceived of the renewal of the Italian school, anticipating the structure of the comprehensive school and incorporating the nursery school with infants and children from 0 to 3 years of age. In 1911, she created the first Rinnovata Pizzigoni building, still standing today in Milan. The book explores the real evolution of the experimental method introduced in infant schools, and shows how the initial pedagogical idea can develop creatively, without being an imitation of a previous model.
