Book Synopsis Ottoman Canon and the Construction of Arabic and Turkish Literatures by : C. Ceyhun Arslan
Download or read book Ottoman Canon and the Construction of Arabic and Turkish Literatures written by C. Ceyhun Arslan and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ottoman Canon and the Construction of Arabic and Turkish Literatures fleshes out the Ottoman canon's multilingual character to call for a literary history that can reassess and even move beyond categories that many critics take for granted, such as 'classical Arabic literature' and 'Ottoman literature'. It gives a historically contextualised close reading of works from authors who have been studied as pionneers of Arabic and Turkish literatures, such as Ziya Pasha, Jurji Zaydan, Ma?ruf al-Rusafi and Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar. The Ottoman Canon analyses how these authors prepared the arguments and concepts that shape how we study Arabic and Turkish literatures today as they reassessed the relationship among the Ottoman canon's linguistic traditions. Furthermore, The Ottoman Canon examines the Ottoman reception of pre-Ottoman poets, such as Kab ibn Zuhayr, hence opening up new research avenues for Arabic literature, Ottoman studies and comparative literature.

Book Synopsis The Evolution of Theatre and Drama in the Middle East and North Africa by : Ali Kiani
Download or read book The Evolution of Theatre and Drama in the Middle East and North Africa written by Ali Kiani and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural expressions of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region have a rich tradition, communal narratives, and spiritual connectivity. This tapestry, distinct from the secular drama prevalent in Western cultures, is a unique blend of indigenous traditions and Western influences. This book introduces the rich and diverse theatrical practices developed and matured in the region from the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries. The introduction of Western-style theatre in the nineteenth century marked a shift from traditional entertainment forms. In the twentieth century, subjects of colonialism, nationalism, independence, and Islamic ideology have often dominated the theatrical discourse, reflecting the region’s socio-political realities. The book’s final section looks at theatre from a twenty-first global perspective, including the crucial role of the diaspora. This book shows how colonialism, Islamic ideology, politics, war, refugee crisis, and nationalism have permeated MENA’s theatre in the past and have continued to shape it in the present.

Book Synopsis The Thousand and One Nights and Twentieth-Century Fiction by : Richard van Leeuwen
Download or read book The Thousand and One Nights and Twentieth-Century Fiction written by Richard van Leeuwen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 842 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is gradually being acknowledged that the Arabic story-collection Thousand and One Nights has had a major influence on European and world literature. This study analyses the influence of Thousand and One Nights, as an intertextual model, on 20th-century prose from all over the world. Works of approximately forty authors are examined: those who were crucial to the development of the main currents in 20th-century fiction, such as modernism, magical realism and post-modernism. The book contains six thematic sections divided into chapters discussing two or three authors/works, each from a narratological perspective and supplemented by references to the cultural and literary context. It is shown how Thousand and One Nights became deeply rooted in modern world literature especially in phases of renewal and experiment.
