Book Synopsis The History of Chess by : H. J. R. Murray
Download or read book The History of Chess written by H. J. R. Murray and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 882 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murray's History of Chess is regarded as the most authoritative and most comprehensive history of the game. Murray's aim is threefold: to present as complete a record as is possible of the varieties of chess that exist or have existed in different parts of the world; to investigate the ultimate origin of these games and the circumstances of the invention of chess; and to trace the development of the modern European game from the first appearance of its ancestor, the Indian chaturanga, in the beginning of the 7th century. The first part of the book describes the history of the Asiatic varieties of chess, the Arabic and Persian literature on chess, and the theory and practice of the game of shatranj. The second part is concerned with chess in Europe in the Middle Ages, its role in literature and in the moralities, and with medieval chess problems, leading up to the beginning of modern chess and the history of the modern game through to the 19th century.
Book Synopsis Leadership Lessons from Shakespeare’s Plays by : GRK Murty
Download or read book Leadership Lessons from Shakespeare’s Plays written by GRK Murty and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Whatsoever a great man does, the same is done by others as well”, says the Bhagavadgītā. Shakespeare is one of such great men. He decocted man’s cosmic world into his plays, and his characters display greatness along with humility and frailty. His plays, which so lucidly articulate the hidden process of interiority of the protagonists, are a living force even today. The problems that they portray and the consequences that they map are not dissimilar to those that the leaders of today’s businesses encounter. Today’s leaders are, of course, equipped with better tools to manage these, but they may not be superior to the spiritual depth or moral strength that we experience in these classics. In a refreshing approach, this book delineates theories of leadership and management through the characters and the themes of the Bard’s plays, contextualizing their infinite variety to the concepts being expounded in today’s business environment.

Book Synopsis Pay to Play by : Lori Latrice Martin
Download or read book Pay to Play written by Lori Latrice Martin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-03-20 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book advances the debate about paying "student" athletes in big-time college sports by directly addressing the red-hot role of race in college sports. It concludes by suggesting a remedy to positively transform college sports. Top-tier college sports are extremely profitable. Despite the billions of dollars involved in the amateur sports industrial complex, none winds up in the hands of the athletes. The controversies surrounding whether colleges and universities should pay athletes to compete on these educational institutions' behalf is longstanding and coincides with the rise of the black athlete at predominately white colleges and universities. Pay to Play: Race and the Perils of the College Sports Industrial Complex takes a hard look at historical and contemporary efforts to control sports participation and compensation for black athletes in amateur sports in general, and in big-time college sports programs, in particular. The book begins with background on the history of amateur athletics in America, including the forced separation of black and white athletes. Subsequent sections examine subjects such as the integration of college sports and the use of black athletes to sell everything from fast food to shoes, and argue that college athletes must receive adequate compensation for their labor. The book concludes by discussing recent efforts by college athletes to unionize and control their likenesses, presenting a provocative remedy for transforming big-time college sport as we know it.
