Book excerpt: Once dismissed as a cozy world of teddy bears and fairies, the arrival on the scene of numerous highly original, contemporary, and "cool" graphic artists in recent years has transformed perceptions of children's book illustration. Children now grow up with a more informed and sophisticated visual diet—with cartoons, animated movies, comics, TV, and computer games—consuming a vast range of stylistic approaches, and illustrated books have moved to match the demands of a more discerning market. Equally, artists who in the past may not have considered the children's picturebook as an appropriate vehicle for artistic expression are increasingly drawn to the area. This book showcases some of the most interesting work emerging within the genre from a range of cultural backgrounds. It examines trends in use of media—both digital and traditional—and discusses the variety of approaches to subject matter.

Book Synopsis The Masochistic Playpen by : Brook Ziporyn
Download or read book The Masochistic Playpen written by Brook Ziporyn and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-05-30 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Masochistic Playpen is a comedic work of serious fiction, albeit one with a lot of sarcastic violence and philosophy in it, set in a science fiction milieu, replete with clone networks, information conglomerates, wandering assassins, disintegration travel and so on. It has been described as a Schwarzenegger vehicle as written by Flaubert, in collaboration with Lewis Carroll, Johann Gottlieb Fichte and an irritable tenth-century Chinese monk, with some histrionic last-minute suggestions phoned in by Sabbatai Zevi and the Marquis de Sade. The story traces a young unfrozen assassin on a fool’s errand across the galaxy, slaughtering clones according to an obscure slightly Kafkaesque assignment, forced to assume a variety of undercover roles in different worlds and societies, adapting to their customs and ingratiating himself--as ambassador, as priest, as god, as gangster, as talk-show guest--to get close to his victims. His adventure takes him from earth to the Disneyesque world of Pleasure Land, where he finally meets his ultimate quarry and the thread on which he has been dangling is finally unraveled. On the way, the absurdly intersubsumptive omniverse which is his to navigate gets its kicks, reveling on both sides of his subjectivity in the maliciously jubilant mirrorings which, some may say, seem to dog the steps of every moment of sentient experience.

Download or read book Sextuplets written by Linda Root Fortini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-14 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This unique and fascinating book carefully traces aspects of the personality of sextuplets which persist from birth onwards. The way in which the personal characteristics of both the mother and her children influence the quality of maternal care and relationships with peers is also carefully compared and delineated. What is most original and striking about this book is the examination of sibling group relationships and the description of the sextuplets' early innate characteristics and interactions in early childhood through both psychological testing and infant observations and then shows how specific characteristics and interactions persist through early adult life. It is essential reading for many professionals involved in child development studies including doctors, teachers, psychologists, psychotherapists and health visitors.'- Jeanne Magagna, Phd, Consultant Psychotherapist, Ellern Mede Centre and former Head of Psychotherapy Services, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children
