Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plato The following sketch makes no claim to be considered as a complete account of the philosophy of Plato. Many topics of importance have been omitted altogether, and others only treated with the utmost attainable brevity. I have also thought it necessary to avoid, as far as possible, all controversial discussion, and have therefore in many cases followed my own judgment on disputable points without attempting to support it by the detailed reasoning which would be indispensable in a work of larger scope. My object has been to sit as loose as possible to all the traditional expositions of Platonism, and to give in broad outline the personal impression of the philosopher's thought which I have derived from repeated study of the Platonic text. Those who are the most competent to condemn the numerous defects of my little book will, I hope, be also most indulgent in their verdict on an attempt to compress into so small a compass an account of the most original and influential of all philosophies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plato and Platonism: A Series of Lectures Plato has seemed to many to have been scarcely less than the creator of philosophy and it is an immense advance he makes, from the crude or turbid beginnings of scientific enquiry with the Ionians or the Eleatics, to that wide range of perfectly finished philosophical litera ture. His encyclopaedic View of the whole domain of knowledge is more than a mere step in a progress. Nothing that went before it, for compass and power and charm, had been really comparable to it. Plato's achievement may Well seem an absolutely fresh thing in the morn ing of the mind's history. Yet in truth the world Plato had entered into was already almost weary of philosophical debate, bewildered by the oppositions of sects, the claims' of rival schools. Language and the processes of thought were already become sophisticated, the very air he breathed sickly with off-cast speculative atoms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Later PlatonistThe religious rites and beliefs were also set forth as pertaining to a common principle, and only at fault as having been adulterated with foreign and incongru ous elements. He taught, says Mosheim, that the religion of the multitude went hand in hand with Philosophy, and with her had shared the fate of being by degrees corrupted and obscured by human con ceits, superstition and lies; that it ought therefore to be brought back to its original purity by purging it of this dross and expounding it upon philosophical prin ciples; and that the whole purpose which Christ had in view was to reinstate and restore to its primitive integrity the Wisdom of the ancients - to reduce within bounds the universally-prevailing dominion of superstition - and in part to correct and in part to ex terminate the various errors that had found their way into the different popular religions.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Platonism in English Poetry, of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries To Professor George Edward Woodberry I am most deeply grateful for innumerable sugges tions and invaluable advice. The work was undertaken at his suggestion, and throughout the past two years has progressed under his kindly criticism. But the help and inspiration which I have received from him antedate the inception of the essay, extending back to the earlier days of undergraduate life. The work is thus inseparably connected with the training in the study of literature which he has given, and his help in its completion is only an episode in a long series of kindnesses which he has been ever willing to show. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Republic of Plato I have' felt some hesitation as to the right course to take in citing the MS where its reading is preferred and agrees with that of F. Professor Burnet's article in the Classical Review Vol. XVI p. 98 ff. Called forth an acknow ledgment from the editor (classical Review Vol. XVI p. 215 ff.) that F and 7/ were of the same family, and that, as F is the older member, it should be cited in preference to 7/ wherever the two agree. If this were done, however, it would have been necessary to re-write the last paragraph on p. Xii of the Introduction, and also note 3 on the same page. I have been unwilling to make so great an alteration in the editor's work, and have therefore cited both mss in all cases where F and 7) have a common reading, which is preferred to that of A. The slight additions to the Introduction involved by this change are indicated by square brackets on pp. Xii and xiii. The corrections of the text have necessitated the omission of some passages in the list on p. Xvii, where the reading of Al was originally adopted, but that of A2 was substituted in the large edition. Otherwise the Intro duction is unchanged, with the exception of the additions mentioned above. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School of Plato: Its Origin, Development, and Revival Under the Roman Empire 3. It is a matter of some concern to the present age, whether the solution given in the Christian doctrine and ethics (the former immeasurably the more important) is to maintain itself, or to give way to some new sub stitute: whether the victory Of the Church after the long conclave was final, or a mere halt in the march of progress, a truce for a season owing to the fatigue Of the combatants. An inquiry, then, into the speculation Of the Roman age should be Of interest, as helping us to determine how far we are to-day confronted with really novel problems, perplexed by entirely fresh solutions. For it is clear that no one can to-day afford to play the reformer or the prophet, without a thorough knowledge of the past; or to come forward as a propounder Of new truths, without asking whether he may not have been anticipated. TO one who proposes to occupy these high functions, the study Of the Imperial age is above all others indispensable. It is a. Miniature, a summary Of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Influence of Plato, on Saint Basil From this brief statement of a few facts bearing on the relation of Plato to the leaders Of early Christian thought it is plain that Ackermann's observation is entirely correct when he remarks on p. 8 that it seems very difficult for the Christian Fathers of the first centuries to escape the influence of Plato. Now the purpose of the present study is to Show how far the influence of Plato is manifested in the works of Basil, but before proceeding to the subject proper it is desirable to take 'a rapid review of Basil's early life and education in order to Show the tendency of his preliminary training.
