Book excerpt: The extraordinary story of the woman who made plastics recycling possible. Milly Zantow wanted to solve the problem of her town’s full landfill and ended up creating a global recycling standard — the system of numbers you see inside the little triangle on plastics. This is the inspiring story of how she mobilized her community, creating sweeping change to help the environment. On a trip to Japan in 1978, Milly noticed that people were putting little bundles out on the street each morning. They were recycling — something that hadn’t taken hold in North America. When she returned to Sauk City, Wisconsin, she discovered that her town’s landfill was nearing capacity, and that plastic made up a large part of the garbage. No one was recycling plastics. Milly decided to figure out how. She discovered that there are more than seven kinds of plastic, and they can’t be combined for recycling, so she learned how to use various tests to identify them. Then she found a company willing to use recycled plastic, but the plastic would have to be ground up first. Milly and her friend bought a huge industrial grinder and established E-Z Recycling. They worked with local school children and their community, and they helped other communities start their own recycling programs. But Milly knew that the large-scale recycling of plastics would never work unless people could easily identify the seven types. She came up with the idea of placing an identifying number in the little recycling triangle, which has become the international standard. Milly's story is a glimpse into the early days of the recycling movement and shows how, thanks to her determination, hard work and community-building, huge changes took place, spreading rapidly across North America. Book Synopsis Feedstock Recycling of Plastic Wastes by : Jose Aguado
Download or read book Feedstock Recycling of Plastic Wastes written by Jose Aguado and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of plastic materials has seen a massive increase in recent years, and generation of plastic wastes has grown proportionately. Recycling of these wastes to reduce landfill disposal is problematic due to the wide variation in properties and chemical composition among the different types of plastics. Feedstock recycling is one of the alternatives available for consideration, and Feedstock Recycling of Plastic Wastes looks at the conversion of plastic wastes into valuable chemicals useful as fuels or raw materials. Looking at both scientific and technical aspects of the recycling developments, this book describes the alternatives available. Areas include chemical depolymerization, thermal processes, oxidation and hydrogenation. Besides conventional treatments, new technological approaches for the degradation of plastics, such as conversion under supercritical conditions and coprocessing with coal are discussed. This book is essential reading for those involved in plastic recycling, whether from an academic or industrial perspective. Consultants and government agencies will also find it immensely useful.

This book was released on 2023-08-02 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waste management professionals now face a more complex challenge than ever before in collecting, transporting, treating, and disposing of solid waste, especially that which is produced in medium and large metropolitan centers. In economically developing nations, where resources like money and people are already limited, the issue is magnified. Providing professionals in nations that are developing and those from the industrialized countries who might be identified as upon to provide support to those countries with objective, reliable, and helpful information is an important step toward alleviating the challenges associated with waste management. One of the least understood and most troublesome aspects of plastic's environmental effect is how it gets disposed of. Interestingly, the durability as well as resistance to decomposition that make plastic so appealing are also source of among its major problems when it comes to plastics disposal. The manmade chemical connections in plastic are very difficult for natural creatures to break down, which is a huge concern. Only a small fraction of plastic produced (less than 10%) is recycled successfully; the rest ends up in either landfills, where it will sit for thousands of years, or incinerators, where the toxic compounds it contains are released into the air and eventually accumulate in biotic forms in the surrounding ecosystems.
