Book excerpt: Optimal Design of Flexural Systems: Beams, Grillages, Slabs, Plates and Shells covers theoretical developments and optimal solutions for all boundary conditions that may be of practical or theoretical interest in the design of flexural systems. Organized into nine chapters, this book begins with a review of certain fundamental concepts of mechanics, calculus of variations, and optimal design. Subsequent chapters discuss in considerable details the theories of optimal plastic design, as well as the elastic and prestressed systems. Other chapters describe the theory of optimal flexure fields that give an absolute minimum statically admissible ""moment volume"" for plane systems, as well as the slabs and grillages optimized within various types of geometrical constraints. The last chapter evaluates experimental work and certain practical aspects of the optimization of flexural systems. This book will be of interest to graduate students, research workers, practicing engineers, and architects in structural engineering, architectural science, aerospace technology, solid mechanics, and applied mathematics.

Book Synopsis Inelastic Behaviour of Plates and Shells by : Luiz Bevilacqua
Download or read book Inelastic Behaviour of Plates and Shells written by Luiz Bevilacqua and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last ten years a considerable volume of inform ation has been accumulated regarding the inelastic behaviour of materials. The increasing number of communications published in specialised journals and also the frequency of meetings in these fields, indicates a considerable research effort aimed at such topics as plasticity, creep, fatigue, visco-plasticity and the like. This fact encouraged a group of Brazilian researchers, stimulated enthusiastically by Professor P. Germain, to submit a proposal for a Symposium on the "Inelastic Behaviour of Plates and Shells" to the General Assembly of IUTAM. Brazil had recently joined IUTAM and the Brazilian Association of Mechanical Sciences was eager to host an IUTAM meeting. In the selection of the subject, it was taken into account, besides a promising number of original contributions, the interest to be raised amongst the Brazilian researchers and engineers, in order to maximise the participation of the host country. The recent steps taken in this country towards the develop ment of the aero-space industry, the construction of nuclear power plants a.nd the off-shore exploration of petroleum have required an intensification of research activities in several fields, structural behaviour of plates and shells being one of the most important. Therefore, the suggested theme would attract the interest or a significant group of Brazilian researchers and engineers and match the necessity for exchanging experience among leading scientists working in those fields.

Book Synopsis Plastic Limit Analysis of Plates, Shells and Disks by : M.A. Save
Download or read book Plastic Limit Analysis of Plates, Shells and Disks written by M.A. Save and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-12-18 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised and updated edition of a book first published in 1972 has kept the general features of the first edition but as could be expected after two decades there are also substantial differences. For instance optimal design has been completely deleted as the developments in this field have been so great that it warrants a book in itself. The fundamental concepts based on Drucker's postulate rather than those of Prager's assumptions function have been introduced. Problems of cyclic loading have been given some more extensive treatment, both in the general theory and in applications. General indications and references have been added for reinforced concrete plates and shells. A general presentation of the yield condition for both plates and shells has been included and the section on the influence of axial force in plates has been almost re-written. Finally, a chapter has been added exclusively devoted to the numerical approach to limit load and shake-down load evaluation. Like the previous edition the book is directed towards engineering applications. The theory is rigorously developed and is therefore of great use to engineering students in plastic limit analysis. Furthermore, applications to metal and reinforced concrete plates and shells and to metal disks are treated by both analytical and numerical approaches.
Book Synopsis Optimization in Structural Design by : A. Sawczuk
Download or read book Optimization in Structural Design written by A. Sawczuk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural optimization, a broad interdisciplinary field, requires skillful combining of mathematical and mechanical knowledge with engineering. It is both intellectually attractive and technologically rewarding. The Symposium on Optimization in Structural Design was the second IUTAM Symposium in Poland. Fifteen years have elapsed since the Symposium on Nonhomogeneity in Elasticity and Plasticity, presided by Professor Olszak, was held in Warsaw. These fifteen years mean a lot for mechanics in Poland. Continuing the tradition of Professor Maksymilian Tytus Huber's research, considerable development of the mechanical sciences has been achieved in this country mostly due to the knowledge, vision and persistence of Professors Wit old Nowacki and Waclaw Olszak, eminent Members of our Academy. The Institute of Fundamental Technological Research was established, competent research groups grew, matured and contri buted to thermo-elasticity, plasticity, general theory of constitutive equations, and to structural mechanics-just to mention a few do mains. Mechanics is now penetrating into the technology of this country at an accelerating pace. The optimization in mechanics has a tradition in Poland. In 1936 Professor Zbigniew Wasiutynski formulated the optimality criterion for mean stiffness design using an elastic energy concept. Further work in this field has been done since, mostly in the last ten years. On behalf of the Committee for Mechanics of the Polish Academy of Sciences I wish to thank the IUTA1V[ Bureau for the decision to hold in Warsaw the Symposium the present volume contains the contribu tions to.

Book excerpt: Optimization in Mechanics: Problems and Methods investigates various problems and methods of optimization in mechanics. The subjects under study range from minimization of masses and stresses or displacements, to maximization of loads, vibration frequencies, and critical speeds of rotating shafts. Comprised of seven chapters, this book begins by presenting examples of optimization problems in mechanics and considering their application, as well as illustrating the usefulness of some optimizations like those of a reinforced shell, a robot, and a booster. The next chapter outlines some of the mathematical concepts that form the framework for optimization methods and techniques and demonstrates their efficiency in yielding relevant results. Subsequent chapters focus on the Kuhn Tucker theorem and duality, with proofs; associated problems and classical numerical methods of mathematical programming, including gradient and conjugate gradient methods; and techniques for dealing with large-scale problems. The book concludes by describing optimizations of discrete or continuous structures subject to dynamical effects. Mass minimization and fundamental eigenvalue problems as well as problems of minimization of some dynamical responses are studied. This monograph is written for students, engineers, scientists, and even self-taught individuals.
