Book Synopsis Weed Biology and Management by : Inderjit
Download or read book Weed Biology and Management written by Inderjit and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weeds hold an enigmatic and sometimes-controversial place in agriculture, where they are generally reviled, grudgingly tolerated, and occasionally admired. In most cases, growers make considerable effort to reduce the negative economic impact of weeds because they compete with crops for resources and hinder field operations, thereby affecting crop productivity and quality, and ultimately the sustainability of agriculture. Weed control in production agriculture is commonly achieved through the integration of chemical, biological, and mechanical management methods. Chemicals (herbicides) usually inhibit the growth and establishment of weed plants by interfering with various physiological and biochemical pathways. Biological methods include crop competition, smother crops, rotation crops, and allelopathy, as well as specific insect predators and plant pathogens. Mechanical methods encompass an array of tools from short handled hoes to sophisticated video-guided robotic machines. Integrating these technologies, in order to relieve the negative impacts of weeds on crop production in a way that allows growers to optimize profits and preserve human health and the environment, is the science of weed management.

Book Synopsis Green Manure/Cover Crop Systems of Smallholder Farmers by : Marjatta Eilittä
Download or read book Green Manure/Cover Crop Systems of Smallholder Farmers written by Marjatta Eilittä and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1980s and 1990s, green manure/cover crop (GMCC) systems became a popular agricultural technology in research and development efforts for smallholder tropical and subtropical farmers. However, few syntheses of these experiences have been conducted. This volume of case studies contributes to bridging this gap by reviewing field-level experiences with these systems. Twelve case studies are included. Eleven of them describe experiences from Latin America (4 cases), Africa (6 cases) and Asia (1 case) and the twelfth case reports on the development of a GMCC systems database. Two concluding chapters, `Learning from the Case Studies' and `Future Perspectives', build upon the cases. The systems described are diverse. Some systems have been spontaneously adopted by farmers, while others have been introduced to the farmers through diffusion efforts. Some of the cases reviewed describe small, localized efforts while others report on large-scale, well-known ones, such as the combination of GMCCs and conservation tillage in Santa Catarina, Brazil, the maize-Mucuna system in northern Honduras, and the improved fallow systems in Eastern Zambia. Most experiences include both development and research aspects and to the extent possible the cases integrate these two. Discussion of the strengths and shortcomings of the systems and efforts is frank, and the goal is to learn from these experiences to benefit future efforts. It is expected that both researchers and development practitioners and students of tropical farming systems and soil management will find this volume of case studies useful.

Book Synopsis Nutrient Management for Sustainable Crop Production in Asia by : A. E. Johnston
Download or read book Nutrient Management for Sustainable Crop Production in Asia written by A. E. Johnston and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past 30 years, crop yields, particularly of rice, have been greatly increased in many Asian countries by advances in plant breeding and by the application of nitrogenous and phosphatic fertilizers. This has become known as the "Green Revolution", which has been a major factor underpinning the rapid growth of Asian economies, providing a cheap, indigenous food supply. However, while human populations continue to increase, in many cases yields are no longer being sustained, due to a reduction in soil quality. Thus, food security in Asia has again become a source of concern. This book is the result of an international conference held in Bali in December 1996, initiated by The World Phosphate Institute (IMPHOS) to discuss the action which must be taken to reverse soil degradation and improve nutrient levels. It includes papers and working group reports on nutrient management and balance, the potential of different phosphate sources, rock phosphate efficiency in acid upland soils, current usage and future requirements for fertilizers, sustainability and the environment, and policy and pricing. Finally, there is a summary and conference resolution. Contributors to the book come from Europe, USA, Australia and many Asian countries. It is essential reading for soil scientists and agronomists concerned with agriculture in Asia and will also be of interest to environmentalists, ecologists and economists concerned with sustainable natural resource management.
