Book excerpt: First published in 1974, The Literature and Study of Urban and Regional Planning discusses the processes of spatial planning and the range of subject knowledge which is required to contribute to it. It describes the physical forms in which the literature relating to spatial planning is usually presented and the ways in which this literature is made available in different types of organization. The author gives details of the most useful libraries whose facilities are available to students, and of the research which is being undertaken into the principal problems of planning information. The second part of the book consists of a subject bibliography, divided for ease of reference into twenty-six sections each concerned with a component part of spatial planning and containing annotated references to books, official publications, developmental plans, legislation, and other material. This book will be of interest to students of sociology and urban studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. Management of coastal zone areas is particularly complicated due to their international nature. Focussing on European coastal zones, this volume examines the various key issues and concerns and highlights the importance of partnership approaches. It details the inter-relationship between the various organizations involved (both governmental and none-governmental), as well as appraising the current national and international legislation and possible future policies. The contributors draw on in-depth case studies from the UK, the Baltic and Hellenic coasts and discuss topics such as international conflicts within the coastal zone, the effectiveness of planning legislation and how to appraise environmental and cultural impacts of changes in coastal zone land use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coastline is an important part of the country's natural heritage since it provides valuable scenery, plant and wildlife habitats, and geographical features. The coast also provides significant benefits of shelter and deep water for ports and harbours, breeding grounds for fish and shellfish, and opportunities for tourism and recreation. The developed coast has its share of dereliction and of land which will need to be re-developed in the forseeable future. This report addresses the technical earth science information on the physical environment needed to support decision making in the coastal zone, with particular reference to the earth science information needs at the various stages of the planning and development process. The report has relevance for a wider audience, by describing the key considerations that need to be addressed by all those with an interest or responsibility in coastal management.

Book excerpt: In this, the first of two self-standing volumes bringing The New Oxford History of England up to the present, Brian Harrison begins in 1951 with much of the empire intact and with Britain enjoying high prestige in Europe. The United Kingdom could still then claim to be a great power, whose welfare state exemplified compromise between Soviet planning and the USA’s free market. When the volume ends in 1970, no such claims carried conviction. The empire had gone, central planning was in trouble, and even the British political system had become controversial. In an unusually wide-ranging, yet impressively detailed volume, Harrison approaches the period from unfamiliar directions. He explains how British politicians in the 1950s and 1960s responded to this transition by pursuing successive roles for Britain: worldwide as champion of freedom, and in Europe as exemplar of parliamentary government, the multi-racial society, and economic planning. His main focus, though, rests not on the politicians but on the decisions the British people made largely for themselves: on their environment, social structure and attitudes, race relations, family patterns, economic framework, and cultural opportunities. By 1970 the consumer society had supplanted postwar austerity, the socialist vision was fading, and 'the sixties' (the theme of his penultimate chapter) had introduced new and even exotic themes and values. Having lost an empire, Britain was still resourcefully seeking a role: it had yet to find it.
