Book Synopsis An Introduction to Spatial Planning in the Netherlands by : Patrick Witte
Download or read book An Introduction to Spatial Planning in the Netherlands written by Patrick Witte and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-13 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to spatial planning in the Netherlands. It explores the academic underpinnings of the discipline and its practical implications, making use of insights on planning practices from the Netherlands. As an academic book with relevance for spatial planning teaching and practice, the relation between planning practice and planning as an academic discipline are discussed. A key analytical concept is introduced to discuss the different dimensions of planning: the planning triangle. This framework helps to bridge the strategic and conceptual elements of planning with its realization. The object, process, and context of planning and its relations are discussed. The core of the academic discipline and profession of spatial planning entails looking (far) into the future, stimulating discussion, formulating a desired future direction through an informal and collective planning process, and then formalizing and placing current action into that future perspective. In that sense, spatial planning can be understood as the strategic organization of hopes and expectations. As a study book it is suitable for students of planning at various universities, but also for students in higher professional education. For those involved in the professional field of spatial planning, this book offers a sound foundation.
Book Synopsis Flexibility and Commitment in Planning by : D. Thomas
Download or read book Flexibility and Commitment in Planning written by D. Thomas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the ways in which two western European countries attempt to cope with the changing demands of urban development. In particular, it is con cerned with the differences in approach of the Dutch and English planning systems and the contrasting ways in which they are used to guide, promote and control development. The book results from a research study in which members of staff at Delft of Technology and Oxford Polytechnic compared local planning and University development in the Netherlands and England. The aim was to investigate ways in which development was promoted and controlled under different planning systems. The research was subsequently developed along two converging lines. One was an examination of over twenty case studies of plan making and the con trol of development in the cities of Leiden and Oxford. The other was a study of the two planning systems and the ways in which the respective approaches to planning were seen to relate closely to the contrasting legal and administrative systems and differences in development practice. The convergence of the two lines of enquiry produced a tension between empirical observations and theoretical supposition which led to a fruitful development of ideas about the nature of the two planning systems and how they promote and control develop ment.

Book Synopsis Dutch Land-use Planning by : Barrie Needham
Download or read book Dutch Land-use Planning written by Barrie Needham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dutch planning is widely known and admired for its ambitions and its achievements. This book provides, for the first time, a comprehensive description and analysis in English of its full range of policies and practices. It gives an up-to-date account of the principles - written and unwritten - behind the planning, and in addition shows how the practice sometimes ignores those principles in order to achieve better results. It describes the content of the policies, the measures taken to realise them, and the successes and failures. The book is not uncritical of Dutch land-use planning, but the author values its strengths and believes that planning in other countries could learn from them. These strengths arise in the continuing tension between the high ambitions of the Dutch planning, and the ingenuity and pragmatism exercised in order to realise those ambitions.

Book Synopsis Consensus Planning: The Relevance of Communicative Planning Theory in Duth Infrastructure Development by : Johan Woltjer
Download or read book Consensus Planning: The Relevance of Communicative Planning Theory in Duth Infrastructure Development written by Johan Woltjer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was published in 2000: This text offers a standpoint on communicative, participatory planning called "consensus planning". The discussion takes place in the Netherlands, where consensus-based decision-making is part of the national heritage. The book explores recent Dutch infrastructure development experiences and concludes that communicative planning theory does not offer uniform relevance for the challenges that planning practitioners face. Building on these experiences, it proposes the concept of consensus planning as valuable in a complementary, normalized, and contingent way. Consensus planning, in other words, has diverse practical appearances and sometimes may not exist or be desirable.
