Book Synopsis Planning and Managing School Facilities by : Theodore Kowalski
Download or read book Planning and Managing School Facilities written by Theodore Kowalski and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly half of the nation's school buildings need to be renovated or replaced. This book provides a knowledge base for administrators to plan and manage construction projects, and addresses specific planning tasks including public opinion polling, enrollment projections, financial planning, selecting architects and other professionals, and managing facilities once they are operational. Theodore Kowalski addresses the administrative procedures associated with planning and managing school facilities. As noted at the outset, practitioner interest in school facilities has been growing rapidly in recent years because decades of neglect, poor planning, and cost cutting have created a situation in which large numbers of America's school buildings are in need of major repair or replacement. At the same time, the realization that costs related to repair and replacement have escalated significantly has fueled a new concern among school facility planning and management. Writing for school administrators, superintendents, and board members as well as graudate students in education, Kowalski discusses planning from the perspective of both individual facility projects and more comprehensive district-wide efforts. The responsibilities associated with administering school buildings are also approached from the individual school and district program perspectives. Part One of the book examines historical and contemporary perspectives of school facility planning. A systems perspective is provided for defining the adequacy of school buildings, and the effects of changing demographics, school reform, technology, and obsolescence are detailed. Various planning paradigms and needs assessment are the foci for Part Two. Part Three examines specific tasks related to completing a facility project. They include public opinion polling, securing professional services, and management responsibilities before, during, and after construction. Part Four includes these focused issues: planning elementary schools, planning secondary schools, doing enrollment projections, working with other agencies, choosing between renovation and new construction, financing capital outlay, and maintaining facilities once they become operational.

Download or read book Problems in Planning Urban School Facilities written by William W. Chase and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increase in the population of the United States and the rapid movement of people from rural to urban areas continue to create many problems in the great cities. Overcrowding of residential areas, congestion of streets and highways, increased demands for city services, and the changing social patterns of cities contribute to these problems. To solve them, immediate and long-range goals must be cooperatively established and striven for. Even though many of the legally constituted agencies such as the school systems, boards of health, highway departments, city planning commissions, and others are quite independent of one another, there is an essence of interdependence necessary to successful planning. Each agency would be in a better position to fulfill its own functions· and objectives if it had an awareness of the problems of the other agencies. This study, an attempt to identify characteristic problems in planning school facilities in metropolitan central cities, is one effort to acquaint the various planning groups with at least one phase of this very important and overall community interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two powerful forces are driving American's demands for better schools -- one longstanding force is idealistic and the other is "new" and economic. The current group of young Americans is in danger of being the first full generation to consistently make less money and enjoy fewer worldly rewards than their parents. The intersection of idealistic and pragmatic forces has produced an era of calls for reform in U.S. education that is unparalleled -- calls that have resulted in the creation of the New American Schools Development Corporation (NASDC). The chapters in this book highlight the path traveled by NASDC -- a private, non-profit corporation charged with creating new, "break the mold" school designs for the 21st century -- and describes the first three years' accomplishments of nine NASDC development teams.

As America's school buildings age, we face the growing challenge of maintaining the nation's education facilities at a level that enables our teachers to meet the needs of the 21st century learners. This tool has been developed to help readers better understand why and how to develop, implement, and evaluate a facilities maintenance plan. It focuses on: maintenance as a vital task in the responsible management of an education organization, the needs of an education audience, strategies and procedures for planning, implementing, and evaluating maintenance programs, a process to be followed, rather than a canned set of "one size fits all" solutions, and recommendations based on "best practices", rather than mandates. The document offers recommendations on the following important issues, which serve as chapter headings: Introduction to School Facilities Maintenance Planning Planning for School Facilities Maintenance Facilities Audits (Knowing What You Have) Providing a Safe Environment for Learning Maintaining School Facilities and Grounds Effectively Managing Staff and Contractors Evaluating Facilities Maintenance Efforts
Book Synopsis School Bond Success by : Carleton R. Holt
Download or read book School Bond Success written by Carleton R. Holt and published by R & L Education. This book was released on 2002 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many school buildings across America are falling apart due to age or lack of maintenance. Others are outmoded and do not meet the needs of modern educational programs and curricula. Unfortunately, school administrators and boards of education have found it increasingly difficult to obtain the funding necessary to correct facility problems in their districts. However help is at hand in the revised edition of a popular title originally published in 1999. Holt updates the status of school facilities in the U.S. and provides new information on the relationship between school climate and student achievement. New to this edition is a discussion of the importance of technology in school bond issues and construction. The nuts and bolts of securing the funding for facility construction, a component of the building process usually overlooked in training administrators, are clearly outlined in chapters that begin with a look at the problem of aging schools and follow through the planning and project development phases to the bond campaign and election day. Filled with tips, checklists, and insights on the details from experienced school leaders, this is the perfect guide to consult every step on the way to victory.
