Book excerpt: This historical novel for young readers, set in 1852 in southeastern Wisconsin between Milwaukee and Chicago, introduces us to two neighboring 13-year-olds, Katie McEachron and her friend Florence Mather, who experience an exciting summer as the wooden plank road that runs by their homes brings intriguing strangers to their dinner tables and the plight of runaway slaves to their consciences. Katie McEachron is a forthright, impulsive girl who has not yet learned the importance of keeping silent. Her friend Florence Mather, a solemn and hardworking girl, came with her family from Cornwall, England. Florence has an eager mind, but her mother is less interested in Florence¿s education than in having her help at the inn. One day in May a stranger arrives at the inn, where neighbors have gathered to plan the first Racine County fair. The visit of the mysterious stranger launches a string of events that will make this a most unforgettable summer for the two girls. Themes include Underground Railroad (fugitive slaves en route to Canada), Transportation (historic plank roads), Rural Pioneer Life and Immigrant Heritage in the Upper Midwest / Great Lakes region. The co-authors are sisters who grew up in locale depicted in the book, where they heard stories of the old plank road from descendants of the early settlers. Hilda Demuth-Lutze, a high school English teacher, lives in rural Northwest Indiana (near Valparaiso). Emily Demuth Ishida, a school library aide and freelance writer, lives in a suburb of Chicago.

Book excerpt: Plank Road Winter is a middle-grade historical novel set in rural Wisconsin in the aftermath of the Great Chicago Fire and the recent American Civil War, as young Sophie and Hans deal with issues of family, friendship, and the importance of making good choices in difficult times. In October 1871, 13-year-old Sophie Caswell longs to escape the dullness of life in her small farming community. Her grand plan is to find fame far away from Yorkville, Wisconsin. Sophie¿s dreams are thwarted when the Chicago Fire brings chaos to that city, and leads to the arrival of 12-year-old Hans Hoffman and his family at the nearby McEachron farm. While Sophie stubbornly pursues her dreams, Hans struggles to adapt to a world very different from the bustling German neighborhood he once knew. During a memorable winter, Sophie and Hans learn much about life, loss, and the road home, as their families face the challenges of the years following the Civil War. Plank Road Winter is a sequel to Plank Road Summer, which was a story set in Yorkville, Wisconsin, in 1852 when two pioneer girls become involved in the Underground Railroad. Winter takes place a generation later, when those pioneer girls are grown up and married with children of their own.

Book Synopsis Punk Aesthetics and New Folk by : John Encarnacao
Download or read book Punk Aesthetics and New Folk written by John Encarnacao and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joanna Newsom, Will Oldham (a.k.a. 'Bonnie Prince Billy'), and Devendra Banhart are perhaps the best known of a generation of independent artists who use elements of folk music in contexts that are far from traditional. These (and other) so called ’new folk’ artists challenge our notions of 'finished product' through their recordings, intrinsically guided by practices and rhetoric inherited from punk. This book traces a fractured trajectory that includes Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music, Bob Dylan, psych-folk of the sixties (from Vashti Bunyan to John Fahey), lo-fi and outsider recordings (from Captain Beefheart and The Residents to Jandek, Daniel Johnston and Smog), and recent experimental folk (Animal Collective, Six Organs of Admittance, Charalambides) to contextualise the first substantial consideration of new folk. In the process, Encarnacao reviews the literature on folk and punk to argue that tropes of authenticity, though constructions, carry considerable power in the creation and reception of recorded works. New approaches to music require new analytical tools, and through the analysis of some 50 albums, Encarnacao introduces the categories of labyrinth, immersive and montage forms. This book makes a compelling argument for a reconsideration of popular music history that highlights the eternal compulsion for spontaneous, imperfect and performative recorded artefacts.
