Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plane Table: And Its Use in Surveying The plane table, one of the oldest of surveying instruments, is, in its simplest form, merely a board for holding the paper or other material upon which a map is drawn with the aid of a rule or straight edge. Although the plane table has been known and used in Europe to a greater or less extent for more than three centuries, at the present day, in spite of its obvious advantages as regards speed, economy convenience and adaptability for surveying purposes, its use is limited mainly to government surveys in the mapping of large areas of country. Although a useful and serviceable instrument for railroad and land surveyors, it has never come into general use by them in the United States. Why this is so, is hard to explain, unless perhaps because of lack of knowledge of the instrument and its methods, as little has been written on the subject. Of late years it is gradually becoming better known. All recent text-books on surveying give some space to a description of its use and some instruction is given on the subject in many of the colleges and technical schools throughout the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surveying: A Plane Table Manual The arms to which the board is fastened rest upon the sloping upper face of a rather flat hollow cone of brass, to which they are permanently fixed. Upon its lower edge or periphery this cone is fashioned into a horizontally projecting rim, the inferior face of which is as nearly as possible a perfect plane, and this in its turn rests upon a corresponding rim of somewhat greater diameter projecting slightly beyond it. This second rim forms the upper and outer flange of a circular metal disk in the form'of a very Shallow cylinder. The inferior face or plane of the upper flange or rim has, at its contact with the superior face of the lower, a horizontal rotary movement about a common center which is also the center of the instrument, and the two are, held together by means of a solid conical axis of brass extending upward from the center of the inner face of the lower disk. A socket of similar shape fits exactly over this axis, projecting downward from the inner Side of the apex of the conical or upper disk. The two plates are held together by means of a screw with a milled head, capping the cone from the outside, and which can be loosened or removed at pleasure. A tangent screw and clamp fastened to the edge of the upper rim permit, when loose, the revolution of the table about its center, and, when clamped to the lower limb, hold the table firm while the tangent screw gives a more delicate movement. Three equidistant vertical projections of brass, grooved on the underside, and cast in one piece with the under face of the lower disk, extending from the periphery toward the center, rest upon the points of three large screws which come through a heavy wooden block below. This block, which is the top of the stand and is approximate in form to an equilateral triangle, is 254 inches thick when made of wood. It is contemplated having the board made of a special aluminum alloy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-11 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plane-Table and Its Use in Topographical Surveying: From the Papers of the United States, Coast Survey Topography is that branch of surveying by which any portion of the land surface of the earth is mapped in plan on a specified scale or proportion of nature. With the plane-table such a map is constructed on the ground by at once drawing upon the paper, which is Spread upon the table, the angles subtended by different objects, and determining by intersections their relative positions, instead of reading off the angles on graduated instruments and afterward plotting the lines by means of a protractor, as is done in other methods of surveying. The practice with the plane-table has in this respect a great advantage in directness and precision. The measurement of distances and of vertical angles are used, in conjunction with the method of intersections, to obtain all the data for representing the horizontal and vertical features on the map, which is drawn in the field with pencil, the details being filled in according to established conventional signs. The plane-table of the Coast Survey (see Sketch No. 30) is composed of a well-seasoned drawing-board, with beveled or rounded edges, about thirty inches in length, twenty-four in width, and three-quarters of an inch thick. It is commonly made of several pieces of white pine, tongued and grooved together, with the grain running in different directions to prevent warping. It is supported upon three strong brass arms, to which it is fastened by screws passing through4 treatise ON the plane-table. Book Synopsis The Encyclopedia of Field and General Geology by : Charles W. Finkl
Download or read book The Encyclopedia of Field and General Geology written by Charles W. Finkl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1988-04-30 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field work, supplemented by laboratory studies, is a cornerstone for the geological sciences. This volume provides an introduction to general field work through selected topics that illustrate specific techniques and methodologies. One hundred and twenty-three main entries prepared by leading authorities from around the world deal with aspects of exploration surveys, geotechnical engineering, environmental management. field techniques, mapping, prospecting, and mining. Special efforts were made to include topics that consider aspects of environmental geology in particular those subjects that involve field inspections related to, for example, the placement of artificial fills, sediment control in canals and waterways, the geologic effects of cities, or the importance of expansive soils to environmental management and engineering. In addition, some widely ranging topics dealing with legal affairs, geological methodology, the scope and organization of geology, report writing, and other concepts, such as those related to plate tectonics and continental drift, provide a necessary perspective to the arena of field geology.
