Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plane Geometry Developed by the Syllabus Method The belief that the proofs of Geometry should be, as far as possible, worked out by the pupils, either in class discussions or individually, is becoming more widespread every year. The day of memorizing proofs will soon be past, and the most efficient method for mental training along logical lines will be the one generally adopted. This syllabus is written with the hope of encouraging teachers to undertake Geometry by the "no text" method. The author believes very decidedly that this method gives a maximum of mental training with' a minimum waste of energy. The list of theorems is based on the latest reports of the Mathematical Associations, and, while much shorter than that in many of the text-books, it will be found sufficient to prepare the pupils for any of the colleges. It contains all the theorems of the "New England List" with a few additions that simplify proofs. The order is the development of ten years' class use, and will be found different from that of any text. Whenever a theorem has seemed to be simplified, either in. content or in proof, by making a change in its place in the order of theorems, that change has been tried in class, and has been made permanent if it proved of advantage. Any teacher using this book should feel equally free to make changes in the order if he is convinced that there is a decided advantage in the change. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plane Geometry Every attempt has been made to create and cultivate the heuristic attitude on the part of the pupil. This has been done by the method of initiating the pupil into original work described above, by queries in the course 'of proofs, and also at the bottom of different pages, and also by occasional queries in the course of the text where definitions and discussions are presented. In the writer's opinion, the time has not yet come for the purely heuristic study of Geometry in most schools, but it is all-important to use every means to arouse in the pupil the attitude and energy of original investigation in the study of the subject. In other respects, the aim has been to depart as little as possible from the methods most generally used at present in teaching geometry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plane Geometry by the Suggestive Method Tms book is designed for the use of beginners in geometry in second ary schools, and has been used for several years in a simpler form by the teachers of mathematics in the Somerville (mass) English High School. N o attempt has been made to depart in the least from the subject-matter given in the regular Euclidian geometries; the variation from the well-known texts has been more in regard to the presentation of the theorems and the method of development. To those teachers who feel the need of a book intermediate in treatment between a sylla bus and a geometry of completely demonstrated theorems, this work is confidently submitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Plane Geometry for Advanced Students, Vol. 2 The author ))olds very strongly that the educational value of higher geometry lies in that novelty of idea and generality of con ception which is more characteristic of this subject than of any other branch of elementary mathematics. A course of geometrical conics, based on the focus-directrix definition and developed by Euclidean methods, provides excellent practice in rider-work but although the student may gain from it a systematic knowledge of the metrical properties of the conic, yet he will assimilate few, if any, really new ideas. On the other hand a projective treatment introduces the student to a region of geometrical thought, unlike anything he has seen in the past - a transition as abrupt and fertile as the crossing from algebra to the calculus. There are constant surprises, apparent contradictions, features of absorbing interest, and principles which, by the generality of their application and the variety of their expression, cannot fail to fascinate the reader and incite him to investigate their developments for himself. Experience proves incontestably that analytical methods frequently elucidate difficult geometrical conceptions. The theory of ideal elements in pure geometry, the notion of one-to - one correspondence and its application to homography and involution, the principles of conical projection are undoubtedly illuminated by a joint use of geometry and analysis. In Geometry he is to study form, and he will find, for example, that two triangles must necessarily be equal if the three sides of the one are respectively equal to the three sides of the other. Before beginning the subject, however, there are certain terms which, although familiar, are used with such exactness as to require careful explanation. These terms are solid, sur face, line, angle (with various kinds of each), and point. As with most elementary mathematical terms, such as number, space, etc., it is difficult to give them simple and satisfactory definition. Explanations can, however, be given which will lead the student to a reasonable understanding of them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Plane and Solid Geometry for Advanced Students: Including Graphic Statics; Adapted to the Requirements of the Advanced Stage of the South Kensington Syllabus The training in Practical Geometry suitable for the student of Art consists of working problems mainly in Plane Geometry and Perspective. The former because decora tive designs are largely based on geometrical figures; and the latter because an artist constantly deals with appearances. On the other hand, the student of Science finds in Practical Geometry a powerful engine of calculation, which may often with great advantage be employed in preference to analytical processes. The principal use to him of plane geometry is that it enables him to make graphical or semi-graphical computations. Descriptive geometry is of great importance since it is required in problems which involve three dimensions in space; and also because it shows how to exhibit the actual forms and dimensions of solid objects. This book is written for Science students. The necessity of accurate draughtsmanship is insisted on throughout. We describe how the drawing instruments may be set and their efficiency maintained. And the numerical answers appended to many of the examples should help to prevent any relapse into slovenly and in accurate work ou the part of those students who are apt to become lax. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plane and Solid Geometry: Suggestive Method The treatment of the theory of measurement has been modified to make it more easily understood. A treatment of the application of pro portion has been suggested that will make the pupil more independent in his work, and at the same time it has not increased the difficulty of the subject. The book, as now arranged, is sufficient for all college entrance requirements, yet it can be completed, including all the exercises, by, high-school pupils in one school year. For those schools that devote a. Year and a half to the subject additional work has been placed in the Appendix, to which references are given in the text, so that the various propositions and exercises can be taken up in logical order. A fuller treatment of the theory of limits, which many teachers desire, is also given in the Appendix. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
