Book excerpt: We have designed, fabricated and tested with low power a novel W-band traveling-wave tube (TWT) structure based on a slow-wave cylindrically-symmetric photonic band gap (PBG) structure, or an "omniguide". PBG TWT structures have great potential for very large bandwidth and linear dispersion. The omniguide structure was designed and fabricated with silica dielectric with a copper harness. Cold test results were found to be in excellent agreement with the design. A band-width of more than 10 per cent was demonstrated. This structure is designed to generate millimeterwave rf when driven by a 2-A, 120-kV electron beam.

Book excerpt: The program to determine a slow-wave interaction structure for high-power traveling-wave tubes resulted in the development of a circuit termed the ring-loaded meander line. This circuit, demonstrating freedom from interfering modes, high interaction impedance, 70% bandwidth, and better than 1-megawatt power-handling capability at S band, can lead to an entire array of traveling-wave tubes. A theoretical analysis of the ring-loaded transmission line, a generic ancestor of the meander line, was performed to seek solutions to the determinantal equation f(k, beta) = 0. By introducing a meander factor, the results were applied to the meander line circuits. Extensive cold testing was performed by varying the geometric parameters and observing the effects upon dispersion, impedance, and frequency characteristics. A hot-test structure, a tube to demonstrate the meander line at peak power and full bandwidth, was designed and partially assembled. (Author).
