Book Synopsis Cross-border Dialogues by : David Brooks
Download or read book Cross-border Dialogues written by David Brooks and published by Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies University of Cali. This book was released on 2002 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together assessments of a decade of social responses to economic integration between the United States and Mexico, documenting the emergence of social organizations and constituencies as key actors in the bilateral relationship. The studies address labor, environmental, trade advocacy, Latino and immigrant rights, small farmer, and pro-democracy/human rights movements. The authors include both key social organization strategists and researchers who have followed more than a decade of cross-border networking. This book tells the story of the uninvited guests to the transnational negotiating table, their strategies, frustrations, and limitations. For many of these broad-based social constituencies, this process involved a major shift toward thinking transnationally. Their recognition of the ways in which international policies were directly affecting their national and local interests led them to seek out counterparts across borders, though finding common ground required a willingness to agree to disagree. the terms of economic integration between Mexico and the United States succeeded in embedding social and environmental concerns on the international economic policy agenda and foreshadowed the widespread international questioning of globalization that followed.

Book Synopsis Raising Standards for American Education by : National Council on Education Standards and Testing (U.S.)
Download or read book Raising Standards for American Education written by National Council on Education Standards and Testing (U.S.) and published by Department of Education. This book was released on 1992 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recommendations by the National Council on Education Standards and Testing (NCEST) are provided concerning whether national standards and a system of assessments are desirable and feasible and how national standards and a system of assessments are to be developed and implemented. The NCEST found that the absence of explicit national standards keyed to world-class levels of performance severely hampers the ability to monitor the nation's progress toward the six national education goals. Without well-defined and demanding standards, American education has gravitated toward "de facto" national minimum expectations, with curricula focusing on low-level reading and arithmetic skills and on small amounts of factual material in other content areas. Most current assessment methods cannot determine if students are acquiring the skills/knowledge they need to prosper in the future. These assessments reinforce the emphasis on low-level skills and processing bits of data rather than on problem solving and critical thinking. It is concluded that high national education standards and a voluntary linked system of assessments are desirable and feasible mechanisms for raising expectations, revitalizing instruction, and rejuvenating education reform efforts for all American schools and students. The NCEST will work toward local commitment to high national expectation for achievement for all students, and toward developing Federal, state, and local policies that ensure high quality resources (instructional materials and well-prepared teachers). Acknowledgments; authorization for the NCEST; public comments; the six national education goals; and reports of the standards, assessment, implementation, English, mathematics, science, history, and geography task forces of the NCEST are appended. Book Synopsis University and School Collaborations during a Pandemic by : Fernando M. Reimers
Download or read book University and School Collaborations during a Pandemic written by Fernando M. Reimers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2021-11-05 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on twenty case studies of universities worldwide, and on a survey administered to leaders in 101 universities, this open access book shows that, amidst the significant challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, universities found ways to engage with schools to support them in sustaining educational opportunity. In doing so, they generated considerable innovation, which reinforced the integration of the research and outreach functions of the university. The evidence suggests that universities are indeed open systems, in interaction with their environment, able to discover changes that can influence them and to change in response to those changes. They are also able, in the success of their efforts to mitigate the educational impact of the pandemic, to create better futures, as the result of the innovations they can generate. This challenges the view of universities as “ivory towers” being isolated from the surrounding environment and detached from local problems. As they reached out to schools, universities not only generated clear and valuable innovations to sustain educational opportunity and to improve it, this process also contributed to transform internal university processes in ways that enhanced their own ability to deliver on the third mission of outreach.
Download or read book Boundaries written by Christine E. Gudorf and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this expanded and revised edition of a fresh and original case-study textbook on environmental ethics, Christine Gudorf and James Huchingson continue to explore the line that separates the current state of the environment from what it should be in the future. Boundaries begins with a lucid overview of the field, highlighting the key developments and theories in the environmental movement. Specific cases offer a rich and diverse range of situations from around the globe, from saving the forests of Java and the use of pesticides in developing countries to restoring degraded ecosystems in Nebraska. With an emphasis on the concrete circumstances of particular localities, the studies continue to focus on the dilemmas and struggles of individuals and communities who face daunting decisions with serious consequences. This second edition features extensive updates and revisions, along with four new cases: one on water privatization, one on governmental efforts to mitigate global climate change, and two on the obstacles that teachers of environmental ethics encounter in the classroom. Boundaries also includes an appendix for teachers that describes how to use the cases in the classroom.
