Book Synopsis Tropical Stream Ecology by : David Dudgeon
Download or read book Tropical Stream Ecology written by David Dudgeon and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-05-04 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical Stream Ecology describes the main features of tropical streams and their ecology. It covers the major physico-chemical features, important processes such as primary production and organic-matter transformation, as well as the main groups of consumers: invertebrates, fishes and other vertebrates. Information on concepts and paradigms developed in north-temperate latitudes and how they do not match the reality of ecosystems further south is expertly addressed. The pressing matter of conservation of tropical streams and their biodiversity is included in almost every chapter, with a final chapter providing a synthesis on conservation issues. For the first time, Tropical Stream Ecology places an important emphasis on viewing research carried out in contributions from international literature. First synthetic account of the ecology of all types of tropical streams Covers all of the major tropical regions Detailed consideration of possible fundamental differences between tropical and temperate stream ecosystems Threats faced by tropical stream ecosystems and possible conservation actions Descriptions and synstheses life-histories and breeding patterns of major aquatic consumers (fishes, invertebrates)

Download or read book Tropical Ecological Systems written by F.B. Golley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1971 the International Society of Tropical Ecology and the International Association for Ecology held a meeting on Tropical Ecology, with an emphasis on organic production in New Delhi, India. At this meeting a Working Group on Tropical Ecology was organized, consisting of K. C. Misra (India), F. Malaisse (Zaire), E. Medina (Venezuela) and F. Golley (U.S.A.). The object of this Working Group was to stimulate interaction between tropical ecologists through future scientific meetings and other exchanges and communications. A second meeting of ISTE and INTECOL was held in Caracas, Venezuela in 1973, under the direction of Medina and Golley and sponsored by the Depart ment of Ecology, Institute Venezolano Investigaciones Cientificas (lVIC). The basic structure of the meeting was provided by series of invited papers which considered topics of special interest from both an applied and theoretical view. These included physiological ecology (Pannier), populations (Rabinovich), tropical savannas (Lamotte), rivers (Sioli), estuaries (Rodriguez), and island ecosystems (Mueller-Dombois). Contributed papers considered details of these and other ecological topics, including the application of ecology to human problems. The present volume includes the invited papers listed above and a sampling of contributed papers which together illustrate the trends of research in tropical ecology. The papers show that tropical ecology is a vigorous subject of research. While the papers in this volume do not provide reviews of all the topics of study in tropical ecology, they do present authoritative statements on progress in the major subject in the field.

Book excerpt: Berlin Free University is an imagination of what a building might be - a building designed to function as a piece of the city, adapting to the needs of its users while generating opportunities for social interaction. The university offers a window onto the politicized and optimistic discourse of the Sixties and Seventies, but at the same time illuminates contemporary debates around large projects of infrastructure and public space. This extensive study of the building combines texts with a visual survey containing specifically commissioned photographs as well as archive material, plans and construction details.

Book Synopsis Saving Nature's Legacy by : Reed F. Noss
Download or read book Saving Nature's Legacy written by Reed F. Noss and published by Island Press. This book was released on 1994-04-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by two leading conservation biologists, Saving Nature's Legacy is a thorough and readable introduction to issues of land management and conservation biology. It presents a broad, land-based approach to biodiversity conservation in the United States, with the authors succinctly translating principles, techniques, and findings of the ecological sciences into an accessible and practical plan for action. After laying the groundwork for biodiversity conservation -- what biodiversity is, why it is important, its status in North America -- Noss and Cooperrider consider the strengths and limitations of past and current approaches to land management. They then present the framework for a bold new strategy, with explicit guidelines on: inventorying biodiversity selecting areas for protection designing regional and continental reserve networks establishing monitoring programs setting priorities for getting the job done Throughout the volume, the authors provide in-depth assessments of what must be done to protect and restore the full spectrum of native biodiversity to the North American continent.
Book Synopsis Defending the Land of the Jaguar by : Lane Simonian
Download or read book Defending the Land of the Jaguar written by Lane Simonian and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexican conservationists have sometimes observed that it is difficult to find a country less interested in the conservation of its natural resources than is Mexico. Yet, despite a long history dedicated to the pursuit of development regardless of its environmental consequences, Mexico has an equally long, though much less developed and appreciated, tradition of environmental conservation. Lane Simonian here offers the first panoramic history of conservation in Mexico from pre-contact times to the current Mexican environmental movement. He explores the origins of conservation and environmental concerns in Mexico, the philosophies and endeavors of Mexican conservationists, and the enactment of important conservation laws and programs. This heretofore untold story, drawn from interviews with leading Mexican conservationists as well as archival research, will be important reading throughout the international community of activists, researchers, and concerned citizens interested in the intertwined issues of conservation and development.
Book Synopsis Sustainable Tourism? by : Gerda K. Priestley
Download or read book Sustainable Tourism? written by Gerda K. Priestley and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although widely advocated, sustainable tourism is subject to numerous interpretations -- from environmentally friendly forms of tourism to maintaining the economic viability of tourist activity in a specific place. This book explores various views on sustainable tourism and demonstrates its complexity and diversity, in order to clarify the issues in operational terms. It addresses questions such as: can tourist activity be sustainable economically; can tourism lead to sustainability from an environmental perspective; and what is the role of tourism as a sustainable development strategy? Much of the book consists of a series of European case studies, from the U.K., France, Spain, Italy and Greece. These case studies cover three main themes: recreation and tourism in natural and rural areas; coastal tourism; and islands. The book represents a valuable supplementary text for students of tourism, as well as related disciplines such as geography, economics, environmental management, and local and regional planning and development.
