Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Babington Macaulay's History of England was a phenomenal Victorian best-seller which shaped much more than the literary culture of the times: it defined a nation's sense of self, charting the rise of the British Isles to its triumph as a homogenous nation, a safeguard of the freedom of belief and expression, and a central world power. In this book Catherine Hall explores the emotional, intellectual, and political roots of Thomas Macaulay's vision of England, tracing the influence of his father's career as a colonial governor and drawing illuminating comparisons between the two men.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a speech given on August 3, 1857, in Canandaigua, New York. The majority of the speech was a history of British emancipation efforts. Douglass also urged American leaders to follow the British example in this speech. He also credited the West Indian blacks with bringing about their emancipation through violent resistance. He encourages other blacks in the United States to continue to exert similar pressure. However, shortly after he began, Douglass uttered two paragraphs that became the most quoted sentences of all of his public orations, foreshadowing the coming Civil War. He started by saying, "If there is no struggle, there is no progress."
Book Synopsis The Economic Aspect of the Abolition of the West Indian Slave Trade and Slavery by : Eric Williams
Download or read book The Economic Aspect of the Abolition of the West Indian Slave Trade and Slavery written by Eric Williams and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-02-07 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his influential and widely debated Capitalism and Slavery, Eric Williams examined the relation of capitalism and slavery in the British West Indies. Binding an economic view of history with strong moral argument, his study of the role of slavery in financing the Industrial Revolution refuted traditional ideas of economic and moral progress and firmly established the centrality of the African slave trade in European economic development. He also showed that mature industrial capitalism in turn helped destroy the slave system. Establishing the exploitation of commercial capitalism and its link to racial attitudes, Williams employed a historicist vision that has set the tone for an entire field. Williams’s profound critique became the foundation for studies of imperialism and economic development and has been widely debated since the book’s initial publication in 1944. The Economic Aspect of the Abolition of the West Indian Slave Trade and Slavery now makes available in book form for the first time his dissertation, on which Capitalism and Slavery was based. The significant differences between his two works allow us to rethink questions that were considered resolved and to develop fresh problems and hypotheses. It offers the possibility of a much deeper reconsideration of issues that have lost none of their urgency—indeed, whose importance has increased.

There are many in this country, and by no means in the lowest stations, who never hear the subject mentioned but they have before their minds chains, dungeons, scourging, maiming, wounding, and death. To their terrified imaginations it appears the land of horrors, where cruelty sits in brief authority, and the oppressed drag out a gloomy life in groans and tears, without any of the comforts of exist ence, and of course, without manifesting any signs of enjoyment.
