Book excerpt: Drawing from the nearly half a million photographs and documents comprising the Historic American Buildings Survey held in the US Library of Congress, this book constructs a fictional ?one-way road trip? across the United States, weaving north and south across the Mason-Dixon line while tacking west. In A Field Measure Survey of American Architecture, Jeffrey Ladd uses the HABS archive as a surrogate in order to manifest a portrait of his former country at a moment when its democracy seems imperiled.00Inspired equally by the social documentary work of Walker Evans and the architectural interventions of Gordon Matta-Clark and others, Ladd embraces the muteness of photographs to create an ambiguous space where the sculptural, political, forensic, and fictional coalesce within a landscape of both beauty and fragility. What initially appears to be a single voice is revealed to belong to dozens of makers; what seems a description of the distant past is revealed to be closer to the present than expected. A Field Measure Survey sheds light not only on this remarkable archive but on the proliferate meanings that can be shaped from its images.

Book excerpt: Dairy Character is a loose chronicle of Odette England's experience growing up on a rural dairy farm in southern Australia. Combining recent photographs, family snapshots, archival images, and autobiographical short stories, England examines the male-dominant farming community in which she was raised and the gendered repression that rural females experience. Her images and texts evoke a girl introduced to reproductive labor at an early age. A girl who wanted a pink room. A girl fenced in by interconnecting forms of vulnerability. A girl who had a cow named after her.

Book excerpt: Heat Transfer XIII: Simulation and Experiments in Heat and Mass Transfer contains the proceedings of the thirteenth conference in the well established series on Simulation and Experiments in Heat Transfer and its applications. Advances in computational methods for solving and understanding heat transfer problems continue to be important because heat transfer topics and related phenomena are commonly of a complex nature and different mechanisms like heat conduction, convection, turbulence, thermal radiation and phase change as well as chemical reactions may occur simultaneously. Typically, applications are found in heat exchangers, gas turbine cooling, turbulent combustion and fires, fuel cells, batteries, micro- and mini- channels, electronics cooling, melting and solidification, chemical processing etc. Heat Transfer might be regarded as an established and mature scientific discipline, but it has played a major role in new emerging areas such as sustainable development and reduction of greenhouse gases as well as for micro- and nano- scale structures and bioengineering. Non-linear phenomena other than momentum transfer may occur due to temperature-dependent thermophysical properties. In engineering design and development, reliable and accurate computational methods are requested to replace or complement expensive and time consuming experimental trial an error work. Tremendous advancements have been achieved during recent years due to improved numerical solution methods for non-linear partial differential equations, turbulence modelling advancements and developments of computers and computing algorithms to achieve efficient and rapid simulations. Nevertheless, to further progress in computational methods requires developments in theoretical and predictive procedures – both basic and innovative – and in applied research. Accurate experimental investigations are needed to validate the numerical calculations. Topics covered include: Heat transfer in energy producing devices; Heat transfer enhancements; Heat exchangers; Natural and forced convection and radiation; Multiphase flow heat transfer; Modelling and experiments; Heat recovery; Heat and mass transfer problems; Environmental heat transfer; Experimental and measuring technologies; Thermal convert studies.

Book excerpt: This textbook provides a complete overview of motivation and emotion, using an overarching organizational scheme of how biological, psychological, and environmental sources become motivation—the inducement of behavior, feelings, and cognition. It combines classic studies with current research and uses numerous real-world examples to engage the student and make often-difficult theoretical concepts come to life. By understanding and applying the principles of motivation described in the text, students will not only discover insights into what motivates their own behavior but also how to instigate self-change. Thoroughly revised and updated throughout, this fifth edition provides a major review of recent research, with over 225 new references, including expansion in the areas of goal motivation and emotion psychology. Other updated topics include new findings and interpretations on how evolution affects our preferences, how personality traits determine motivation, and how self-control depends on a cost/benefit analysis. The addition of individual chapter glossaries and an increased number of links to additional resources supplement student learning. This textbook is suitable as a primary text for courses on motivation. For additional resources, please consult the companion website at www.routledge.com/cw/deckers.

Being a Cowboy is All He Knows...But No Cowboy Can Rein Her In. Bronc-buster Mack Boyd can ride a wild stallion to a standstill, but he can't say no when his family prevails on him to come home and help run the ranch. The last person he expects to find there is a high-class Easterner like Cat Crandall. When Cat Crandall gives up a lucrative advertising job to follow her artistic dreams, she's thinking Paris, Tuscany—not the vast and lonely open country of Wyoming. Her success at Boyd Ranch's artists' retreat could be her ticket to far more exotic places...but the rough and rugged cowboy she meets there is giving Cat a different kind of inspiration. Book excerpt: Collecting The Story of Samantha Smith #1-3 Three full-length novels: Fearless, Reckless, and Painless At the age of sixteen, Samantha Smith’s innocence was shattered in the blink of an eye. She kept the pain to herself for three years, burying her terrible secret beneath black clothes and black makeup, afraid to tell anyone. The price for her silence was the loss of her happiness and all of her friends. After moving from stuffy Washington D.C. to laid back San Diego, where Samantha is now a freshman at San Diego University, she is determined to find new friends and reclaim her optimistic spirit. Having thrown away her goth exterior, she hopes that her new sunny look will heal her wounds. Dreaming of adventure, she wishes to escape the humdrum middle-class existence that has repressed her fiery nature for as long as she can remember. But her parents are pressuring her to major in Accounting because it’s the safe thing to do. Samantha secretly considers ditching the business major to study Art, a choice that would horrify her parents if they ever found out. When Samantha crosses paths with a troubled, handsome, tattoo-clad bad boy, her life spins into overdrive, and Samantha finds herself juggling more adventure than she ever dreamed possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Degrowth Decolonization and Development reveals common underlying cultural roots to the multiple current crises. It shows that culture is an essential sphere to initiate fundamental changes and solutions as it brings about transformative imaginaries on a theoretical, political and practical level. The book focusses on the interplay between culture and the environment, society and the economy. It provides a critique of concepts associated with the term “Development” and reveals knowledge and theories outside the comfort zone of the mainstream Western theoretical landscape, which will certainly be instrumental in the decolonization of both development theories and practices. The book convincingly reveals the large array of domains, which, when interpreted from a decolonization and Degrowth perspective, can be managed through logics of environmental justice, social equity and equality, and generate societally more desirable outcomes. The book presents a multidisciplinary perspective on the contemporary global crises and features interdisciplinary analyses thereof through the lenses of cultural studies, critical development studies, political economy, eco-feminist political ecology, anthropology and sociology. Degrowth Decolonization and Development unveils the fundamental role of the dichotomies characterizing the Western modern development paradigm in shaping today’s actions, and especially the dichotomies of Global North and Global South, Centre and Periphery, Developed and Developing/Underdeveloped, Man and Nature. Degrowth Decolonization and Development addresses all researchers and activists interested in sustainability transformation and decolonization processes in Development studies. Degrowth Decolonization and Development is structured as a collection of seven original case studies. These are authored by researchers who met when presenting their work in Decolonization and Degrowth panels from the ISEE-ESEE-Degrowth Conference, Manchester, July 5-8, 2021, and the 8th International Degrowth Conference in The Hague, Netherlands, August 24-28, 2021. The concluding chapter proposes a synthesis identifying key concepts and steps in cultural change for the decolonization of the Western worldview towards “pluriverse” alternatives. The book traces future imaginaries for modelling future new systemic solutions and a needed radical change.

Book excerpt: Cat Chong's Plain Air: An Apology in Transit is a pamphlet in flux, a diary like inner-monologue without a single full stop, charting the speaker's journeys from A to B yet evoking a bigger change, as the speaker leaves behind student life and wanders into the wider world. 'Plain Air...' contains meditations on disability, opioid use, carbon emissions, food waste and veganism backdropped by extinction rebellion protests and the songs of Oh Wonder. It's a pamphlet of quiet courage, resonant and resolutely rooted in the now.
