Book excerpt: The integrated luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider (lhc), which is proportional to the number of particles colliding and thus data being collected, is planned to be increased by a factor of 5-7.5 compared to the design luminosity of the lhc by the end of the 2020s. This step is motivated by the potential to measure Standard Model physics processes especially in the top quark and Higgs sector with high precision and discover new physics. However, this upgrade to the High Luminosity-lhc will result in an increased particle density in the experiments, causing a higher hit occupancy in the ...

Book excerpt: ATLAS is one of the two main experiments at LHC with the purpose of investigating the microscopic properties of matter to address the most fundamental questions of particle physics. After the achievements of the first years of running, the potential reach for new discoveries and precise measurements at LHC is being extended by pushing further the energy and luminosity frontiers through three upgrades of the accelerator culminating in the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). To fully profit from the increased luminosity, two main upgrades of the ATLAS inner detector are planned. The first upgrade was already completed at the beginning of 2015 with the insertion of the IBL, a fourth pixel layer located at just 3.2 cm from the beam line. In the second major upgrade, foreseen for 2024, the full inner detector will be replaced by a completely new inner tracker fully made of silicon devices to cope with the high particle density and the harsh radiation environment at the HL-LHC, which during its operational period will deliver 3000 fb-1, almost ten times the integrated luminosity of the full LHC program. This thesis addresses the study of new n+-in-p active edge pixel detectors by developing two novel doping profile analysis methods to study the radiation damage effects on the pixel detectors performance. These methods are the 3D sims imaging method and the TLM Method. TCAD simulation has been used to simulate the doping profiles, the electrical behavior and the radiation damage. Validating the simulation models with data have been done. Moreover, clean-room characterization, as well as testbeam measurement have been performed to test the different detector designs. In the second part of the thesis, I discuss the observation of the standard model Higgs boson bb decay mode using the data collected by ATLAS during the LHC Run2 at center-of-mass energy 13 TeV and an integrated luminosity 79.8 fb−1 of a proton-proton collision. I contributed specifically to the search of the standard model Higgs boson in VH(bb) production mode. In the VH(bb) analysis we don't have any channel that considers the tau leptons in the final state. I have performed a feasibility study to verify the gain of using the taus in the analysis. In addition, for the VH(bb) analysis I have worked on the multi-jet background estimation in the 1-lepton channel using the dijet-mass analysis method.

Book excerpt: One of the most powerful machines to study particle physics is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Starting in 2024, it will be upgraded to the High Luminosity-LHC (HL-LHC) to deliver even more data to measure with high precision Standard Model (SM) physics processes, and to maximise the potential to discover new physics. Higher luminosity implies a higher radiation environment, which poses challenges to the detectors of the experiments. To deal with radiation damage, pile up, and needed read-out speed, ATLAS will replace its current tracking detector with the new Inner Tracker (ITk). The inne...

This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is planned to undergo a major upgrade, called the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), to fully exploit its physics potential until the end of its operation with an instantaneous luminosity of 5 to 7.5 times the design value (1*10^34 cm^(-2)s^(-1)). Consequently, the LHC experiments have to be upgraded as well (Phase-II upgrade) to be able to cope with the resulting increase in pile-up, data rates, and radiation doses. Therefore, the tracking detector of the ATLAS experiment, the Inner Detector, will be fully replaced by a new all-silicon tracking detector, the Inner Tracker (ITk). While it has been decided that only the baseline design of the pixel part of the ITk will be pursued, which foresees the use of hybrid pixel detectors, it has been worthwhile to study monolithic pixel sensor options as well, whose production is comparatively cost-efficient. Monolithic pixel sensors have recently made their way into particle physics experiments and they were considered as an alternative sensor option for the outermost pixel layer of the ITk. Within the scope of this thesis, a high voltage monolithic active pixel sensor (HV-MAPS) prototype, called ATLASPix_Simple, was characterized and studied regarding its suitability for the use in the ITk.

Book excerpt: The ATLAS experiment will start operating at the High Luminosity LHC accelerator (HL-LHC) in 2026 to increase the probability of new discoveries. Depleted CMOS monolithic pixel detector technology has been one of the options considered for the outer layer of an upgraded ATLAS pixel detector and is a high potential technology for future pixel detectors. In this thesis, several prototypes have been developed using different depleted CMOS technologies, for instance, LFoundry (LF) 150 nm, TowerJazz (TJ) 180 nm and austriamicrosystems AG (AMS) 180 nm. In a high-energy environment like HL-LHC, Single Event Upsets (SEU), which become of concern for reliable circuit operation. Several test-chips in AMS, TowerJazz and LFoundry technologies with different SEU tolerant structures have been prototyped and tested. The SEU tolerant structures were designed with appropriate electronics simulations using Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools in order to study the sensitivity of injected charge to upset a memory state. An alternative powering scheme named Serial Powering scheme is foreseen for the future Inner Tracker (ITk) detector of the ATLAS experiment. To meet the requirements ofthe ATLAS experiment to the environment of a pixelated layer in a high radiation collider environment, new developments with depleted CMOS sensors have been made in Shunt-LDO regulator and sensor biasing which are designed in modified TowerJazz 180 nm CMOS imaging technology. In the TowerJazz modified process, two different voltage levels are used for the purpose of sensor depletion. The bias voltages are generated by using a negative charge pump circuit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) physics program has been extended to the period 2026-2037 to deliver an order of magnitude more of proton-proton collisions compared to end 2023. To sustain the harsh conditions imposed to detectors in this period (radiation, high occupancy), the current ATLAS Inner Detector will be replaced by a new one using the most recent silicon sensor technologies. One of them is the generalization of the cooling with two-phase CO2 flowing in titanium tubes located close to the silicon sensor and associated electronics. The choice of CO2 relies on its most favourable thermo-physical properties in boiling state. The radiation damage during the HL-LHC program will be quite harsh and the engineering of the local supports under such extreme conditions requires a deep understanding of the two-phase behaviour of the CO2 flowing inside the titanium pipes, and a precise modelling of the heat transfer through the mechanical structure. However, the data available on CO2 boiling in channels of small hydraulic diameter (say, below 3 mm) is limited and often affected by too large uncertainties. This enforces the detector designers to include large safety factors and long iterative phases of experimental measurements, which could be sensibly reduced by the availability of reliable models. This thesis starts with a quick description of the ATLAS Upgrade Phase II project, a first outlook on the fundamentals of two-phase cooling technology, widely used to cool particle detectors in high-energy physics (HEP) experiments and discussion about the thermal management requirements of the future ATLAS Pixel Detector. Several custom tools were developed in python language to guide the design and optimisation of the the CO2 cooling system: simulation of heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and frictional pressure drops along evaporators, flow distribution studies in manifolds and calculation of thermal requirements. In a second phase, the document presents the thermal test setup to measure thermal performances of thermal prototypes for the new detector (ITk) as well as the associated simulation based on Finite Element analysis and Heat Transfer Coefficient modelling. A novel fit method was implemented to extract from the measurements the different parameters of the ITk elements (in situ material thermal conductivities, manufacturing variability, HTC...). The results are compared the current CO2 model predictions and the discrepancies discussed. A new set of parameters for the CO2 model was built to improve precisions by factor two on the effective HTC values for the ITk working conditions and integrated in the python modelling tool. Finally, the impact of this work on the design of the Pixel detector is presented.

Book excerpt: The Inner Tracker (ITk) system of the ATLAS experiment will be upgraded for the 2026 High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) run. The HL-LHC will operate with a center of mass energy of 14 TeV and a peak instantaneous luminosity five times higher than at present. The increased luminosity will result in roughly ten times higher radiation levels and data rates. To cope with the ATLAS requirements in terms of radiation hardness, readout speed and granularity at the HL-LHC, the replacement of the present ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk) is needed. Two large-scale depleted CMOS sensors in the 150 nm LF-technology called LF-CPIX and LF-MONOPIX, developed in the framework of the ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITK) upgrade for High Luminosity LHC. The work presented here shows the characterization for these three prototypes, with contributions concerning the setup development, 55Fe and 90Sr source calibration, modifications of the FPGA firmware and development of test programs. A main concern was the investigation on the radiation hardness for both the electronics and the sensor parts. We will show results concerning characterizations for these prototypes in the laboratory performance at CPPM, as well as results in multiple radiation campaigns performed at the 24 GeV IRRAD proton facility at CERN, to study the effects of Non-Ionizing Energy Loss (NIEL) and Total Ionizing Dose (TID) on the prototypes.

This book was released on 2023-07-20 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the Higgs boson and its interactions with fermions, as well as the detector technologies used to measure it. The Standard Model of Particle Physics has been a groundbreaking theory in our understanding of the fundamental properties of the universe, but it is incomplete, and there are significant hints which require new physics. The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 was a substantial confirmation of the Standard Model, but many of its decay modes remain elusive. This book presents the latest search for Higgs boson decays into c-quarks using a proton-proton collision dataset collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This decay mode has yet to be observed and requires advanced machine learning algorithms to identify c-quarks in the experiment. The results provide an upper limit on the rate of Higgs boson decays to c-quarks and a direct measurement of the Higgs boson coupling strength to c-quarks. The book also discusses the future of particle physics and the need for significant improvements to the detector to cope with increased radiation damage and higher data rates at the High-Luminosity LHC. It presents the characterization of the ATLAS pixel detector readout chip for the inner detector upgrade (ITk). The chip was subjected to irradiations using X-rays and protons to simulate the radiation environment at the HL-LHC. The tests showed that all readout chip components, including the digital logic and analogue front-end, are sufficiently radiation-tolerant to withstand the expected radiation dose. Finally, this book describes monolithic pixel detectors as a possible technology for future pixel detectors. This book is ideal for individuals interested in exploring particle physics, the Higgs boson, and the development of silicon pixel detectors.
