This book was released on 2006 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scope and method of study. Study the effects of corrosion pitting of 2024-T3, 6061-T6 and 7075-T6 aluminum alloys in 1.6 mm (0.063 inch) sheet thickness and determine the critical pit depth required for a fatigue crack to initiate. The corrosion pitting was accomplished using a 3.5% NaCl solution with hydrogen peroxide added as an accelerant. The pitting specimens were fatigue cycled in one-way bending until failure and the cycles to failure recorded. The specimens were examined with a metallurgical microscope, using the focus method of ASTM G46 to determine pitting depth.

This book was released on 2003-10-01 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of testing to obtain data on the effect of pitting corrosion on the fatigue life of aluminum specimens. Forty-one coupons of 7075-T6 that had previously been exposed at various USAF bases around the world for up to a year were fatigue tested. The amount of corrosion on each had been previously characterized in terms of mass lost per unit of surface area. Additional characterization of the corrosion with surface roughness traces was done after the fatigue tests. After a threshold level of corrosion was reached, fatigue life generally decreased with increasing mass loss. Surface roughness generally increased with increasing mass loss as well. However, strong relationships could not be established in either case because of the limited amount of data and the scatter inherent in both fatigue and corrosion.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this research was to gain an increased understanding of how microstructure influences pit growth, pit-to-crack transition, and critical crack propagation to fracture. Two thicknesses of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy were etched and subjected to corrosion fatigue in a 3.5 % sodium chloride environment. 7075-T6 aluminum alloy is of particular interest to the aging aircraft community, as this alloy has been used extensively on wing and fuselage structures for both military and commercial aircraft in the past. Testing was interrupted at various intervals to obtain information on pit generation, growth, and potential cracking. Results indicated that microstructure has a significant influence on pit-to-crack transition and fatigue crack propagation. Short cracks (

Book Synopsis Influence of Precorrosion on Fatigue Properties of Shot-Peened Aluminium 7075-T651 by : U. Zupanc
Download or read book Influence of Precorrosion on Fatigue Properties of Shot-Peened Aluminium 7075-T651 written by U. Zupanc and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pitting corrosion has a major influence on aging of structural elements made of high-strength aluminium alloys as corrosion pits lead to much earlier fatigue crack initiation under tensile dynamic loading. In order to improve material resistance to corrosion fatigue, it is necessary to reduce pit-tip stresses in the corroded pits areas. Shot peening (SP) is an important and well-known cold working process, having been used in industrial applications for a long time. Shot peening as intense plastic deformation in the thin surface layer affects cold surface hardening by primary inducing favorable residual compressive stresses. It is used in order to increase fatigue strength in operation and to improve fatigue resistance of precorroded material. The paper deals with the surface integrity of shot-peened high-strength 7075-T651 aluminium alloy. The paper describes the effects of SP treatment by presenting analyses of surface roughness measurement, residual stresses, material bending fatigue resistance, fractographic analysis of fatigued specimens, and electrochemical potentiodynamic testing.

Book Synopsis The Effect of Mean Stress and Environment on Corrosion Fatigue Behavior of 7075-T6 Aluminum by : L. V. Corsetti
Download or read book The Effect of Mean Stress and Environment on Corrosion Fatigue Behavior of 7075-T6 Aluminum written by L. V. Corsetti and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Axial fatigue tests were performed on a 7075-T6 aluminum alloy in tension-compression and under superimposed positive mean stresses in dry air and in aqueous 0.5N NaCl solution. Both corrosive environments and positive mean stresses resulted in lower fatigue lives but no interaction between these variables was observed. Crack initiation in air occurred at electropolish pits at inclusion/alloy interfaces and propagated primarily in a Stage I (crystallographic) mode. A model for environment assisted cracking is presented which suggests that hydrogen induced cleavage is responsible for the degradation in fatigue properties of this alloy. (Modified author abstract).
