Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ever-increasing demands placed on combustion engines are just as great when it comes to this centerpiece—the piston. Achieving less weight or friction, or even greater wear resistance, requires in-depth knowledge of the processes taking place inside the engine, suitable materials, and appropriate design and manufacturing processes for pistons, including the necessary testing measures. It is no longer possible for professionals in automotive engineering to manage without specific expertise of this kind, whether they work in the field of design, development, testing, or maintenance. This technical book answers these questions in detail and in a very clear and comprehensible way. In this second, revised edition, every chapter has been revised and expanded. The chapter on “Engine testing”, for example, now include extensive results in the area of friction power loss measurement and lube oil consumption measurement.

Book excerpt: Engine Testing: Theory and Practice brings together the information on both the theory and practice of engine testing that engineers in this field must have available. Organized into 19 chapters, this book begins with a description of the engine test cell, including the salient features of its main types. Subsequent chapters deal with the other main components of an engine testing installation: the control room and the ventilation systems. Other chapters discuss the essential features of a test installation fuel supply system, as well as the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of the various types of dynamometer. The measurements of torque, power, speed, fuel consumption, air consumption, heat loss, and mechanical loss are also explained. Other topics of significance include the process of combustion, exhaust emissions, data logging, and statistical analysis. This material will be very useful to practicing test engineers and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only book available on liquid piston engines, covering the design, application, maintenance, troubleshooting, and advances in the technology. Whether used in irrigation, cooling nuclear reactors, pumping wastewater, or any number of other uses, the liquid piston engine is a much more efficient, effective, and "greener" choice than many other choices available to industry. Especially if being used in conjunction with solar panels, the liquid piston engine can be extremely cost-effective and has very few, if any, downsides or unwanted side effects. As industries all over the world become more environmentally conscious, the liquid piston engine will continue growing in popularity as a better choice, and its low implementation and operational costs will be attractive to end-users in developing countries. This is the only comprehensive, up-to-date text available on liquid piston engines. The first part focuses on the identification, design, construction and testing of the liquid piston engine, a simple, yet elegant, device which has the ability to pump water but which can be manufactured easily without any special tooling or exotic materials and which can be powered from either combustion of organic matter or directly from solar heating. It has been tested, and the authors recommend how it might be improved upon. The underlying theory of the device is also presented and discussed. The second part deals with the performance, troubleshooting, and maintenance of the engine. This volume is the only one of its kind, a groundbreaking examination of a fascinating and environmentally friendly technology which is useful in many industrial applications. It is a must-have for any engineer, manager, or technician working with pumps or engines.

This book was released on 1970 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Repeated and catastrophic piston failures in a group of large diesel engines deployed in Vietnam for power generation purposes, revealed the urgent need for the development of a fast, reliable means for the detection of incipient failures in these engines. As a result of work subsequently performed by the ROICC-Pacific and various agencies and consultants under his direction, a very successful nondestructive testing technique was established. This technique utilized commercial ultrasonic instrumentation of the pulse-echo type. The procedure, as finalized, will unfailingly detect cracks in the major webs of the diesel engine pistons under consideration, and requires only the removal of the cylinder head for access to the piston top. The only major constraints in the application of this technique are the requirements that the piston material be homogeneous, detailed information relating to piston configuration be available, and the diagnosis be made by technical personnel experiences in ultrasonic interpretation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book appeared in 1995, and has since gained widespread acceptance by practising test engineers on both sides of the atlantic. The purpose of this book is to bring together in one volume the large and scattered body of information on the theory and practice of engine testing and test plant design to which any engineer responsible for work of this kind must have access. the authors have long experience of all aspects of engine testing and have become aware that much of the essentially eclectic knowledge they had amassed was not available in any readily accessible form and indeed was in danger of being lost to the current generation of young engineers. Since publication three years ago, there has been considerable 'feedback', and the authors have become aware that amplification of several topics was desirable. Particular areas where the treatment has been expanded include: * computer control and data logging of test procedures * water supply and treatment * combustion air, supply, treatment, effects on performance * drive shaft design (a subject clearly of wide concern) * exhaust emissions and legislation: an update of this rapidly developing subject In addition a whole new section has been devoted to chassis dynamomenters and test methods for complete vehicles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustion in Piston Engines presents the technique of pressure diagnostics to measure the fuel consumption in an engine cylinder and to monitor the operation of micro-electronic systems for its control. It provides a recipe for bridging the gap between the hydrocarbon-fed combustion technology of automotive powerplants of today and electro-magnetic technologies of the future. The author proposes and introduces a model for the design of a MECC (micro-electronically controlled combustion) systems to modulate combustion in engine cylinders. This system yields significant reduction in the formation of pollutants and the consumption of fuel, so that, eventually, emissions using any clean hydrocarbon fuel will be acceptable and gas mileage could be doubled.
