Book Synopsis Piston-slap Noise in Reciprocating Machinery by : Eric E. Ungar

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important component of mechanical noise of reciprocating machinery appears to be that due to piston-slap, i.e., due to the impacts associated with lateral piston motions across cylinder clearance spaces. This noise mechanism can account for several observed characteristics of diesel engine n ise not readily explained by the more popular theories which consider essentially only effects of cylinder gas pressure changes. The original calculations of piston impacts by V.I. Zinchenko did not consider connecting-rod inertias adequately, nor did they include considerations of the resulting vibratory and acoustic powers. Expressions for estimating vibrations and noise produced by piston-slap in any type of reciprocating machine are developed in this report. Comparisons are made between calculated and measured sound levels, and reasonable agreement is found. (Author).

Download or read book Mechanics of Underwater Noise written by Donald Ross and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics of Underwater Noise elucidates the basic mechanisms by which noise is generated, transmitted by structures and radiated into the sea. Organized into 10 chapters, this book begins with a description of noise, decibels and levels, significance of spectra, and passive sonar equation. Subsequent chapters discuss sound waves in liquids; acoustic radiation fundamentals; wind-generated ocean ambient noise; vibration isolation and structural damping; and radiation by plate flexural vibrations. Other chapters address cavitation, propeller cavitation noise, radiation by fluctuating-force (dipole) sources, and mechanical noise sources. This book will be helpful as a self-education text and as a reference for workers in the field.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Noise and Vibration Control by : Malcolm J. Crocker
Download or read book Handbook of Noise and Vibration Control written by Malcolm J. Crocker and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-10-05 with total page 1594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of the most acclaimed reference works in the area of acoustics in recent years have been our Encyclopedia of Acoustics, 4 Volume set and the Handbook of Acoustics spin-off. These works, edited by Malcolm Crocker, positioned Wiley as a major player in the acoustics reference market. With our recently published revision of Beranek & Ver's Noise and Vibration Control Engineering, Wiley is a highly respected name in the acoustics business. Crocker's new handbook covers an area of great importance to engineers and designers. Noise and vibration control is one largest areas of application of the acoustics topics covered in the successful encyclopedia and handbook. It is also an area that has been under-published in recent years. Crocker has positioned this reference to cover the gamut of topics while focusing more on the applications to industrial needs. In this way the book will become the best single source of need-to-know information for the professional markets.

Book excerpt: Vehicle noise, vibration, and emissions are only a few of the factors that can have a detrimental effects on overall performance of an engine. These aspects are benchmarks for choice of customers while choosing a vehicle or for engineers while choosing an engine for industrial applications. It is important that mechanical and automotive engineers have some knowledge in this area, as a part of their well-rounded training for designing and selecting various types of engines. This volume is a valuable introductory text and a handy reference for any engineer, manager, or technician working in this area. The automotive industry, and other industries that make use of engines in their industrial applications, account for billions, or even trillions, of dollars of revenue worldwide and are important in the daily lives of many, if not most, of the people living on this planet. This is an area that affects a staggering number of people, and the information needed by engineers and technicians concerning the performance of various types of engines is of paramount importance in designing and selecting engines and the processes into which they are introduced.
