Book excerpt: “The course of true love never did run smooth,” sayeth the bard. Even for rock stars. It’s 1984, and Jack St James, lead singer for rock band Pirate, thought he’d married the woman of his dreams only to discover the minister didn’t have a valid license. So it’s off to Vegas, along with the band, to make the marriage official in front of an Elvis impersonator. Jack and his bride rock up to the chapel, only to find that Jack’s cash and credit cards are gone. As Jack chases down band members to get them back, he gets sucked into one band problem after another, only to find his bride now has cold feet. Meanwhile, back in L.A., George discovers that his wife has fallen in love with another man and wants a divorce. Barricading himself in his hotel room, George refuses to give up his beloved toddler son, even when she gets the police involved. After trying to help George, Sam is back to escorting his mom and sisters around the tourist sites in L.A. Only a mangy cat grabs his ankle and won’t let go, preventing him from getting in their limo. Trying to do the right thing for the poor little creature, Sam finds himself saddled with a huge vet bill and a growing attachment to a pet he can’t keep. A pet he’s named Hendrix after his rock ’n’ roll hero. A pet who adores him and defends him from his sisters. A pet whom everyone has fallen in love with except the one person who can decide Drixy’s future – the germ-obsessed Jack St James. Book excerpt: You think you got problems? Try being a rock star, mate. It’s 1984, and lead singer Jack St James is on cloud nine. He’s met the woman of his dreams and his rock band, Pirate, is on track to finish its sold-out American tour in four days. If only he hadn’t done some foolhardy things—things that threaten to derail the end of the tour and wreck his plans to retire to the English countryside. Namely, leaping from one hotel balcony to another eight stories above the ground, attracting the attention of the mainstream news media, and having his true identity revealed to the world. Now his all-powerful father knows exactly where he is and will move heaven and earth to punish him for calling himself “Jack.” How dare he use the name of his brother, his father’s heir and favored son who died a senseless and terrible death? And how dare he shame his father by becoming a rock star, instead of assuming his rightful place in English society? As Jack and band manager Dunk batten down the hatches, little do they know that they face not one but three rich and powerful men colluding to derail the final concerts in the tour: Jack’s evil father, their coked-up A&R executive, and a smarmy swami intent on kidnapping Jack’s new woman. Jack is finally facing the enemy of a lifetime, one he cannot predict or control, and the dream life he’s worked so hard to attain hangs in the balance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is comprised of thirteen essays that explore penitential teachings and practices from the late fifteenth to the early seventeenth centuries in Western Europe and its colonies. Together the essays reveal that in this period, penitence was an increasingly important force shaping the individual and society. Consequently, the authors argue, penitence is central to our understanding of early modern Christianity as it was taught and experienced in everyday life. From Germany to France and to the Americas, Catholics turned to traditional forms of penitence not only to save individual souls, but also to assert their confessional identity. For their part, Protestants established distinctive penitential approaches and institutions in accordance with their own understandings of sin and salvation. In thus examining the treatment of post-baptismal sin across chronological and confessional boundaries, the volume breaks new ground in the history of penance. The volume concludes with a postscript assessing the ways in which the essays enrich the current state of scholarship on penitence and encourage further research. Katharine Jackson Lualdi is an independent scholar. Anne T. Thayer is Assistant Professor of Church History at Lancaster Theological Seminary, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unorthodox musician from the start, singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell's style of composing, performing, and of playing (and tuning) the guitar is unique. In the framework of sexual difference and the gendered discourses of rock this immediately begs the questions: are Mitchell's songs specifically feminine and, if so, to what extent and why? Anne Karppinen addresses this question focusing on the kind of music and lyrics Mitchell writes, the representation of men and women in her lyrics, how her style changes and evolves over time, and how cultural context affects her writing. Linked to this are the concepts of subjectivity and authorship: when a singer-songwriter sings a song in the first person, about whom are they actually singing? Mitchell offers a fascinating study, for the songs she writes and sings are intricately woven from the strands of her own life. Using methods from critical discourse analysis, this book examines recorded performances of songs from Mitchell's first nine studio albums, and the contemporary reviews of these albums in Anglo-American rock magazines. In one of the only books to discuss Mitchell's recorded performances, with a focus that extends beyond the seminal album Blue, Karppinen explores the craft of Mitchell's songwriting and her own attitudes towards it, as well as the dynamics and politics of rock criticism in the 1960s and 1970s more generally.

Book excerpt: This compelling and charming book employs story and whimsy, with delicate, lyrical touches, so that readers can experience in new light the joyful mysteries of the Rosary. Translated for the first time into English, the great Italian writer's poetic, original vision helps readers rediscover the tenderness and beauty in the miracle of Jesus’s birth and childhood, beginning with his conception, and concluding with his adolescence. "Demetrio S. Yocum’s masterful translation of Luigi Santucci’s Tales of Grace makes available what is often lacking in contemporary spiritual reading – a work of high literary value that communicates a sense of mysticism not often exhibited in devotional writing. Without going the route of academic exegesis, Santucci’s tales transpose the reader from the gospel texts to imaginative times and places that inspire fresh insights and awakenings. These are robust meditations that seem particularly appropriate in these days of the pope whose Joy of the Gospel echoes these narratives of wonder and awe." —Andrew D. Ciferni, O.Praem, St. Norbert College "Luigi Santucci’s book is a wonderful and compelling account of the joyful mysteries. Readers will particularly enjoy the way Santucci links together the Scriptural events with his own personal experiences and observations. Yocum’s graceful and impeccable translation fully captures the sound and rhythm of Santucci’s elegant, mid 20th-century Italian prose. A beautiful edition, highly recommended." —Massimo Faggioli, University of St. Thomas, author of John XXIII The Medicine of Mercy "Complete with angels who move houses, a dairy boy and pregnant women who share secrets, rogue guests at the Christmas banquet, a miraculous baptism, and students and teachers who reverse roles at an alumni gathering, Luigi Santucci’s Tales of Grace celebrate the mystery of Word made flesh. Like the joyful mysteries to which they point, these are tales to savor, to ponder, and to embrace. Thanks to the gifted translation of Demetrio Yocum and the artistry of George Kordis, English-speaking readers are now invited to this imaginative feast as well." —Mary Catherine Hilkert, O.P. University of Notre Dame author of Naming Grace: Preaching and the Sacramental Imagination "This book is an extravagant invitation inviting the reader on a rich and powerful journey through the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. We follow the author as he is inserted into the story in the style of imaginative contemplation. Examining everyday elements of sin and grace, this astonishing allegory is rich in language and symbols, illustrated with magnificent icons that beckon us into deeper prayer. The mystical meditations build to a brilliant crescendo of the joy of the salvific power of Christ. —Fran Rossi Szpylczyn is a Catholic writer, speaker, and lay minister in Albany, NY. Innkeeper Oriana Thorpe is a smuggler’s daughter hardened by a legacy she cannot escape. She has risked everything in her attempts to do so, including her safety, going so far as to challenge her evil pirate brother, Charles, in order to save a lady and her maid from his wrath. Determined to atone for his villainy, Oriana decides to distribute the blood money he left behind to the widows and orphans living nearby. As threatening letters promising retribution begin to arrive from Charles, she suspects one or more of her customers may be her despicable brother’s spies. And when one haunted man promises to protect her, she finds herself taking the greatest risk of all—falling in love. Captain Pierce Walsingham should have died when his ship was destroyed by the notorious smuggler Captain Carnage. Instead, Pierce was pulled from the water by the Robin Hood of Cornwall, a pirate known only as the Black Regent. In gratitude, Pierce accepts the Regent’s offer to take over the man’s role, allowing his name to be added to the list of the dead and vowing to protect the beautiful innkeeper who saved his sister Chloe’s life. Unfortunately, Oriana is also Carnage’s next of kin, and the smuggler has sworn vengeance against her and Chloe. While there is no cause dearer to Pierce’s heart than stopping Carnage, the task won’t be easy. Strategic allegiances have replenished his enemy’s power at sea, and he’s moving ever closer to enacting his revenge. Now Pierce must find a way to defeat Carnage, all while fighting his desire for the resilient woman who fiercely defends her roost.

Lady Chloe Walsingham is an enthusiastic gothic romance reader and hopeless romantic focused solely on finding her perfect hero. She also happens to have a penchant for getting into trouble. So when the man she loves disappears after a scandalous duel, she decides to follow him to the ends of the Earth. To do so, however, Chloe must evade her brother, an infamous revenue man, and board a ship bound for Penzance. And nothing in her beloved books can prepare her for the harsh realities of wreckers who ply the coast. After his father destroyed the lives of countless innocent people, Basil Halford, Earl of Markwick is willing to do anything to earn back his honor. Betrayed by his blood and his reputation ruined, Markwick answers the request of a well-heeled duke and dons the Black Regent’s mask to repay the debt. His task? Rescuing a young woman who is chasing down a ghost of a man. But a pirate has plenty of enemies, and Markwick isn’t any different. No matter how diligent a captain he may be, sailing to Lady Chloe’s rescue involves risking not only the Regent’s legacy but the last thing he can afford to lose…his heart.
