Book Synopsis Twisty Little Passages by : Nick Montfort
Download or read book Twisty Little Passages written by Nick Montfort and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2005-02-11 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical approach to interactive fiction, as literature and game. Interactive fiction—the best-known form of which is the text game or text adventure—has not received as much critical attention as have such other forms of electronic literature as hypertext fiction and the conversational programs known as chatterbots. Twisty Little Passages (the title refers to a maze in Adventure, the first interactive fiction) is the first book-length consideration of this form, examining it from gaming and literary perspectives. Nick Montfort, an interactive fiction author himself, offers both aficionados and first-time users a way to approach interactive fiction that will lead to a more pleasurable and meaningful experience of it. Twisty Little Passages looks at interactive fiction beginning with its most important literary ancestor, the riddle. Montfort then discusses Adventure and its precursors (including the I Ching and Dungeons and Dragons), and follows this with an examination of mainframe text games developed in response, focusing on the most influential work of that era, Zork. He then considers the introduction of commercial interactive fiction for home computers, particularly that produced by Infocom. Commercial works inspired an independent reaction, and Montfort describes the emergence of independent creators and the development of an online interactive fiction community in the 1990s. Finally, he considers the influence of interactive fiction on other literary and gaming forms. With Twisty Little Passages, Nick Montfort places interactive fiction in its computational and literary contexts, opening up this still-developing form to new consideration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maker Movement is hot, and librarians are eager to participate. Even if you feel restricted by budget, staff, or space, this step-by-step guide will help you turn your library into a creativity center. The Maker Movement is sweeping the nation because it is creative and educationaland a lot of fun. Nonetheless, some librarians have hesitated to incorporate the movement into their programming because their libraries do not have dedicated makerspaces. If that describes you, then take heart. Written by librarians for librarians, this "cookbook" proves that every library is already a MakerPlace and provides you with recipes to make your library come alive with creativity. Easy-to-use, step-by-step guidance helps you create engaging K8 programs in science and technology, arts and crafts, and home skills that are perfect for the library setting. The menu of ideas is broken into four types of programming. "Appetizers" add a taste of the Maker movement to existing library programs. "Entrees" present full programs for a lengthy one-day event or a short series. "Side Dishes" are programs you can use if you have limited staff, budget, space, or any combination of those. "Desserts" are low-tech programs, suitable for young children. Each "recipe" includes extensions, variations, and curriculum tie-ins that give you even more ways to present the program ideas, whether to a different audience or as part of other related activities. Programs that involve creating a "Balloon Zip Line," a "Zen Garden," or a "Maker Marketplace" will delight library users and generate activity and excitement in your library.

Book Synopsis Seducing the Pirate Queen by : Bethany M. Sefchick
Download or read book Seducing the Pirate Queen written by Bethany M. Sefchick and published by Bethany Sefchick. This book was released on 2020-04-08 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being a pirate is all Emmaline Descoteaux has ever known. However, if she wishes to avoid the noose, she must find another path in life. Utterly bored with everything and everyone, Emme now spends her days in bed with her sexual servants while she attempts to become a respectable businesswoman. That is until Queenie, Emme’s most trusted advisor, makes a bold prediction that sends Emme out into the streets of New Orleans in search of information. American spy turned diplomat, Alexander Pickering is in Spanish-held New Orleans attempting to obtain information about the future of the city and how his young country can use that information to its advantage as part of its plans for territorial expansion. Now that he has that information, Alex is anxious to pass it on to the people who need it the most. Before he can, however, he’s attacked in a dark alley by men looking to kill him. After Emme rescues Alex from certain death, they must go on the run together aboard her ship until help can arrive, even though trouble still follows them as they sail across the Gulf of Mexico. Can Emme trust the crew she has known for years or are they, too, determined to see her hang, and can Alex convince her that he, above all others, can be trusted to guard not just her life but her heart as well? Is it hot? Yes, it is! Please be advised that this 85,200-word novel is written in the true spirit of pirates, including “salty” language and sexual situations that would be historically appropriate for that era. It is NOT a “sweet and clean romance” and is intended for those seeking a MUCH hotter and sexier read while still looking for a romantic happily ever after. This novel is not appropriate for younger audiences
Book Synopsis The Pirate's Wife by : Daphne Palmer Geanacopoulos
Download or read book The Pirate's Wife written by Daphne Palmer Geanacopoulos and published by Harlequin. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic and deliciously swashbuckling story of Sarah Kidd, the wife of the famous pirate Captain Kidd, charting her transformation from New York socialite to international outlaw during the Golden Age of Piracy Captain Kidd was one of the most notorious pirates to ever prowl the seas. But few know that Kidd had an accomplice, a behind-the-scenes player who enabled his plundering and helped him outpace his enemies. That accomplice was his wife, Sarah Kidd, a well-to-do woman whose extraordinary life is a lesson in reinvention and resourcefulness. Twice widowed by twenty-one and operating within the strictures of polite society in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century New York, Sarah secretly aided and abetted her husband, fighting alongside him against his accusers. More remarkable still was that Sarah not only survived the tragedy wrought by her infamous husband’s deeds, but went on to live a successful and productive life as one of New York’s most prominent citizens. Marshaling in newly discovered primary-source documents from archives in London, New York and Boston, historian and journalist Daphne Palmer Geanacopoulos reconstructs the extraordinary life of Sarah Kidd, uncovering a rare example of the kind of life that pirate wives lived during the Golden Age of Piracy. A compelling tale of love, treasure, motherhood and survival, this landmark work of narrative nonfiction weaves together the personal and the epic in a sweeping historical story of romance and adventure.
