Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers of Modern Physical Training Denmark was the first European state to introduce physi cal training into its schools as an essential part of the course and to prepare teachers of that subject by offering sys tematic instruction in theory and method of gymnastics. The leader in this movement, and its director for forty years, was franz nachtegall (177 7 - 1847 whose whole life was passed in Copenhagen. As a student in the uni versity there he had applied himself to fencing and vaulting, and after his father's death undertook to support himself by giving instruction in gymnastics, at first in a private school. In 1799 he organized a gymnastic club composed of stu dents and young merchants, and on November 5 of the same year opened a. Private gymnasium, the first institution in modern times devoted exclusively to physical training. The venture was successful from the start. When five years later the government established a Military Institute for training non-commissioned officers to teach gymnastics in the army, its management was entrusted to Nachtegall, who received the title Professor of Gymnastics. The King also started, in 1808, a Civil Gymnastic Institute, in order to pre pare teachers for the elementary schools. A law passed in 1814 decreed that every school in Denmark Should provide grounds and apparatus for gymnastics, and that wherever the teachers were able to direct it the children should be given an hour of exercise each day, in addition to the regu lar schedule. Nachtegall was appointed Director of Gym nasties in 1821, his duties extending to the schools of the army and navy as well as to civil institutions. He pub lished, In 1828, a Manual of Gymnastics for Elementary Schools, the first book of its kind, and three years later' a Manual of Gymnastics for Use in Secondary Schools. Both were afterwards translated into German. Nachtegall resigned his position as Director of Gymnastics in 1842. Consult the American Physical Education Review for June, 1904 (vol. Are an epitome of all psychological physical culture, and, thoroughly carried out in daily life, will transform that life into a healthy and happy one. This system will be found to be progressive, going from the simple to the complex. It is a complete gymnastic system along aesthetic lines and has been elaborated by the author after many years' experience as teacher and director of physical training in the best schools of New York, com bined with a critical study of the carved works of ancient art. Bas-relief, alto-relief and the free figure, in vase, frieze, pillar, and temple, have been the models for much of the work. This, blended with a knowledge of medical gymnastics, makes the author bold enough to think that she is offering something of real value to the teacher and the pupil of physical culture. Book excerpt: Emerging in colonial India, the fitness fad that was Indian Club Swinging became a global exercise practice in the early 19th century. Used by physicians, soldiers, gymnasts, children and athletes alike, clubs were used to solve numerous social concerns and ills, and often prescribed to treat everything from depression to spinal abnormalities. This book provides a definitive account of the rise and spread of club swinging as it spread from India to Europe and America, asking why and how it became so popular. Discussing the global, commercial fitness culture of the 19th century, Indian Club Swinging and the Birth of Global Fitness explores how the popularity of this exercise reflected much deeper global and domestic concerns about body image, military preparation and education. Addressing broader questions about nationalism, gender, race and popular commerce across the British Empire, it highlights the origins of our modern transnational fitness culture and shows how it intersected with global and colonial understandings of health, medicine and education.

When their father, John Bergson, grows sick and dies, he leaves the farm in the hands of his eldest daughter Alexandra Bergson. Resourceful and determined, Alexandra devotes her life to her family's farm, determined to prosper even as her neighbors are overwhelmed by the unremitting demands of pioneer life. But when she falls in love with her childhood friend, Carl Linstrum, Alexandra must choose between her duty to the land, and to her heart. A spirited celebration of the immigrants who have shaped the United States, O Pioneers! is a masterpiece by a Pulitzer Prize-winning author.

Book excerpt: The life of a pioneer in Western America always is full of peril and hardship; often it has a large share of startling episodes and thrilling adventures; not infrequently it is associated with notable historic events; and the experiences met with develop independence of character, firmness of purpose, and, in those whose spiritual nature is not dwarfed by unworthy conduct, a sublime faith in God that when man puts forth his highest endeavor all things beyond the scope of his efforts are ordered for the best by the Great Ruler of the universe. When to the pioneer's experiences are added those that come from travel in foreign lands, perils of the sea, and the hostility of warlike foes, the narrative of such a life cannot fail to be alike profitable and interesting reading to both young and old. The subject of the autobiographical sketch in this volume feels that he is not presumptuous in saying that each class of experience named in relation to the pioneer and the traveler has been his. The perils and hardships of the pioneers in whose work he commingled have been the theme of song and story for half a century; the thrilling and adventurous character of his experiences as frontiers-man and Indian interpreter were of a kind notable even in those avocations; his association with historic events of moment includes the period when the territorial area of the great Republic was almost doubled by the acquisition of the Pacific slope and the Rocky Mountain region, and when the great gold discovery in California was made, since he was a member of the famous Mormon Battalion and also was present at the finding of gold in California, being the first man to declare—on tests made by himself—that the little yellow flakes were the precious metal; and his reliance on Deity is portrayed in his missionary work at home and in foreign lands, with civilized people and among savages, often in circumstances when life itself apparently was forfeit to duty conscientiously performed.
