In connection with that address we also call special attention to one by Barton W. Stone, which antedates the Campbell address by five years, clearly proving that the reform work that is generally spoken of as the Reformation of the Nineteenth Century, had its inception in the mind and conduct of Barton W. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial Sermon and Address on the Death of President Lincoln: St. Andrew's Church, Pittsburgh, Sunday, April 16, and Wednesday, April 19, 1865 His first national introduction revealed the fact that he was a man of the People. From the rude beginnings of a western pioneer life, he had lifted himself, step by step, to the high place he occupied. Surrounded by the disadvantages of poverty in early life, he had overcome the obstacles which lay in his path; and by the native force of his character, and the simple, unbending purpose of his own will, he had met and overcome the difficulties before which weaker hearts would have quailed. Beneath the rugged visage of the sturdy yeoman, earning his bread by honest and laborious toil, there dwelt a great, heroic soul; a spirit which needed only the Opportunity to reveal its greatness, and which, in. Its highest hopes, was not disappointed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the year 1787, George Washington was President of the newly formed Government of the United States of America. The Capitol was located in New York City. The vast area west of the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River was acquired from Great Britain by the Treaty of Paris in 1783. This area was bordered on the north by Canada and on the south by the Ohio River and encompassed the present day states of Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin. The Government of Great Britain had claimed this territory and by the signing of numerous treaties the Indians living there had given up most of their rights to this land. The British forbid white settlement there to appease the Indians. At the end of the American Revolution, the United States now claimed this territory by “Right of Conquest” over Great Britain and with the creation of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 opened it up for white settlement against the protests of the Indians who still considered it their land. The first permanent American settlement northwest of the Ohio River was Marietta in the year 1788 and soon after more and more pioneers flooded into the country. It was not an easy life for these early pioneers. They had to deal with hostile Indians, disease, starvation and the lack of basic necessities, but they made it and the State of Ohio was admitted into the union in 1803. This book chronicles the events from the earliest explorations of the territory, the purchase of lands by The Ohio Company, the early settlements and the trying times of the early pioneers who settled and tamed this original Northwest Territory.

Book excerpt: Described as “a history of Baptist beginnings in the several associations in the state,” this rare old volume was widely acclaimed when first published in 1919. No less timely today, this reprint has added value with an index of more than 1600 names. Those interested in the genealogical value of this volume will find Burnett has done an excellent job detailing ancestry, dates and places. There are more than 200 sketches with around sixty photographs. Accepting 1775 as the first recorded date of Baptist entry and effort in the state, this volume covers a period of one hundred very eventful years. There is much data of general historical interest and numerous “firsts.” Of interest to all denominations, it is the perfect gift for a church library as well as a personal gift.

Book Synopsis The Reason for God by : Timothy Keller

Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller people can believe in—by "a pioneer of the new urban Christians" (Christianity Today) and the "C.S. Lewis for the 21st century" (Newsweek). Timothy Keller, the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, addresses the frequent doubts that skeptics, and even ardent believers, have about religion. Using literature, philosophy, real-life conversations, and potent reasoning, Keller explains how the belief in a Christian God is, in fact, a sound and rational one. To true believers he offers a solid platform on which to stand their ground against the backlash to religion created by the Age of Skepticism. And to skeptics, atheists, and agnostics, he provides a challenging argument for pursuing the reason for God.
