Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. Tree Crop Ecosystems is a unique new resource which combines the interests of traditional foresters and horticulturalists. Sixteen chapters written by international experts in the field emphasise the current topical issues besetting each of the crops considered. In the past the management of tree crops was focussed on yield without an adequate understanding of crop behaviour. Recent decades have seen many major advances in knowledge, notably those related tree biology and biodiversity within species and between different crops. Throughout the volume the issue of biodiversity is discussed as a key factor in relation to: the conservation of natural resources at risk; within species variation; and the flora and fauna associated with tree crops. Tree Crop Ecosystems is unique in taking an holistic approach to the crops, their origins and within-species variation. Direct and indirect influences of the crops on their ecosystem a

This book was released on 2009 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was a part of the international collaborative IMPACT project, which aims to address the potential threat that the pitch canker disease poses to the use of Pinus radiata D. Don in plantations in New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. A field trial of 264 seedstocks was planted adjacent to a native stand of pitch canker infected P. radiata on the central coast of California, and disease symptom development was recorded over a period of 3 years. The results did not correlate with a greenhouse study of the same seedstocks inoculated with Fusarium circinatum Nirenberg & O'Donnell, the causal agent of pitch canker. Three main types of symptoms were identified (branch flagging, pitchy buds, and chlorotic tips), and preliminary isolation analyses suggest that the disease observed is actually caused by Diplodia pinea (Desm.) Kickx. Survival analysis showed that the effect of tree genetic origin was significant to its time to disease, and that spatial location in the plantation was also significant. Average nearest neighbor analysis showed disease distribution to be significantly clustered, which also suggests that the disease is not pitch canker, but diplodia blight. This experiment illustrates the difficulty in performing naturally infected field trials when another similar-looking fungal disease is also present. It also provides data on seedstock resistance to diplodia blight, another fungal disease important to P. radiata forest managers.

Book Synopsis Sustainable Management of Pinus Radiata Plantations by : Donald J. Mead
Download or read book Sustainable Management of Pinus Radiata Plantations written by Donald J. Mead and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pinus radiata (radiata pine) is a versatile, fast-growing, medium-density softwood, suitable for a wide range of end-uses. Its silviculture is highly developed, and is built on a rm foundation of over a century of research, observation and practice. Radiata pine is often considered a model for growers of other plantation species. This book explores current knowledge of, and experience with radiata pine forest plantation management and examines its long-term sustainability. Radiata pine management needs to integrate the biological aspects of tree-growing, with socio-economics, management objectives, practical considerations and other constraints and opportunities. Although stands of radiata pine may appear to be simple, they are actually quite complex ecosystems because they contain large, long-lived trees that change dramatically over time and interact in changing ways with the environment and with other organisms. The focus of this book is on the principles and practices of growing radiata pine sustainably. It also looks ahead to emerging challenges facing radiata pine plantation management, such as the effects of climate change, new diseases and other threats, and meeting changing product needs and societal demands."--Page 4 of cover.
