As the title says, Penny is different - she has a pink nose! Penny learns that everyone has a something that makes them feel different, but that your differences are what makes you unique. She starts to love her pink nose. One day an unexpected guest arrives: a new puppy named Zoey. Penny is a little nervous about this excited, bouncing dog. Zoey has dark black eyes and is much bigger than Penny. When Penny’s family showers the new puppy with love, she begins to feel lonely again like she did when she lived in the pound. Zoey starts following Penny around their new shared home, but will the two dogs overcome their differences and find a way to be friends? Penny must remember that everyone has things that make them different, but these differences also make us wonderful. In this children’s story, the second book in a series, Penny the Pink Nose Poodle earns that friendship can sometimes be found in the most unlikely places, but by showing kindness, she can help add a little more joy to her life and the people she meets.

Once it was decided the revolution John Lennon sang about was over, a new revolution began. The Poodles are the grandchildren of that revolution. Instead of “power to the people,” it was “power to the pink.” Before the day’s end, the Poodles would know just how far the power of pink had come. The stage was set. The St. Percy Poodles vs. the Nugget State Tigers on homecoming week-end with the national championship at stake. Draglove, AZ was pink “ground zero” as 85,000 strong gathered at Poodle Stadium for the “Treat in the Heat”.

Book excerpt: In the tradition of the beloved New York Times bestsellers Marley and Me and Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love, a charming, inspirational memoir about empathy, resilience, kindness, and an adorable deaf blind pink dog. When Connecticut veterinarian Melissa Shapiro gets a call about a tiny deaf blind puppy rescued from a hoarding situation in need of fostering, she doesn’t hesitate to say, “yes.” Little does she know how that decision will transform her, her family, and legions of admirers destined to embrace the saga of the indomitable pink pup. One of the most anxious dogs Melissa had ever encountered, the traumatized Piglet weighed under two pounds upon his welcome into the Shapiro household—which included Melissa’s husband Warren and their three college-aged kids, plus six other rescued dogs. After weeks of reassurance, and lots of love, Piglet connected, gained confidence, and his extraordinary spirit emerged. Melissa soon forged a powerful bond with Piglet, allowing the two to communicate without sound or visual cues. Two months later, when the day arrived to say good-bye to the now dashing, six-pound pink boy dog with the larger than life spirit, Melissa faced a heart-wrenching decision. Could she hand him over to someone willing to give Piglet the full-time attention he required or could she adapt her schedule and her household to make a permanent place for him in her life and work? Of course, the answer was simple: love would find a way. Curious, engaged, and incredibly eager to learn, Piglet quickly became part of the family. What started out as a few simple Facebook posts of Piglet and his pack rapidly evolved into a global celebration of Piglet’s infectiously positive mindset. Piglet: The Unexpected Story of a Deaf, Blind, Pink Puppy and His Family fully illustrates this heartwarming story of one special little puppy with a purpose to teach the power of empathy, love, and kindness.

Book excerpt: An illustrated A-to-Z tribute to old-fashioned items worth rediscovering: “Wistful . . . charming . . . like a stroll down memory lane.” —Elle Whatever happened to cuckoo clocks? Or bed curtains? Why do we have so many “friends” while doing away with the much more useful word “acquaintance”? All of these things, plus hot toddies, riddles, proverbs, corsets, calling cards, and many more, are due for a revival. Throughout this whimsical, beautifully illustrated encyclopedia of nostalgia, Lesley M.M. Blume breathes new life into the elegant, mysterious, and delightful trappings of bygone eras, honoring the timeless tradition of artful living along the way. Inspired by her much loved Huffington Post column of the same name and featuring entries from famous icons of style and culture, Let’s Bring Back leads readers to rediscover the things that entertained, awed, beautified, satiated, and fascinated in eras past. “Witty . . . recommended reading.” —Country Living “If you’re feeling lousy and you read this book, it awakens you to things that have made you happy in your life. It reminds you of a time when certain things ideas, gestures got you through . . . and revels in an idea of life that’s lived in 3-D, not 2-D.” —Sally Singer, editor, T: The New York Times Magazine

This is the story of four puppies: Fi-Fi, Foo-Foo, Ooh-La-La, and Gaston. Gaston works the hardest at his lessons on how to be a proper pooch. He sips—never slobbers! He yips—never yaps! And he walks with grace—never races! Gaston fits right in with his poodle sisters. But a chance encounter with a bulldog family in the park—Rocky, Ricky, Bruno, and Antoinette—reveals there’s been a mix-up, and so Gaston and Antoinette switch places. The new families look right…but they don’t feel right. Can these puppies follow their noses—and their hearts—to find where they belong?

Book excerpt: The most popular question any pregnant woman is asked — aside from "When are you due?" — has got to be "Are you having a girl or a boy?" When author Andrea Buchanan was pregnant with her daughter, she was thrilled to be expecting a girl. Some people were happy for her; visions of flouncy pink dresses and promises of mother-daughter bonding were the predictable responses. Other people, though, were concerned: "Is your husband OK with that?" "You can try again." "Girls are tough." This mixed message led her to explore the issue herself, with help from her fellow writers and moms, many of whom had had the same experience. As she did in It's a Boy: Women Writers on Raising Sons, Buchanan and her contributors take on what it's really like to raise a child-in this case, a girl-from babyhood to adulthood. It's a Girl, is a wide-ranging, often humorous, and honest collection of essays about the experience of the mother-daughter bond, taking on topics like "princess power" ("Shining, Shimmering, Splendid"), adding a girl to a brood of boys ("Confessions of a Tomboy Mom"), dealing with a daughter's eating disorder ("The Food Rules"), and mothering "hardcore mini-feminists" ("Tough Girls").

Book excerpt: Adopting artist-poet Joe Brainard as its principal focus, this project presents "Pop poetics" not as a minor, coterie movement meriting a sympathetic footnote in accounts of the postwar era's literary history, but as a missing link that confounds and potentially unites any number of supposedly rigid critical distinctions (authenticity versus formalism, the "personal" versus the mechanical). Pop poetics matter, argues Andrew Fitch, not just to the occasional aficionado of Brainard's I Remember, but to anybody concerned with reconstructing the dynamic aesthetic exchange between postwar art and poetry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: O. PRELIMINARY REMARKS Initial drafts of the papers in this collection were presented in a con ference entitled 'Views on Phrase Structure', held at the University of Florida, Gainesville, in March, 1989. Eleven of the twenty-three partici pants in the conference were able to contribute to this volume. The purpose of the conference was to explore theories of phrase structure in their relation to other subsystems of grammar and/or systems of nonlinguistic knowledge. Some of the grammatical subsystems which the authors consider are theta-theory, movement, Case, and binding; a number of papers address how the conceptual system and/or aspects of language use may interact. Unifying the various approaches and perspectives is an attempt to furnish hypotheses concerning prin ciples of phrase structure with some sort of independent justification. 1. PHRASE STRUCTURE THEORY: A BRIEF HISTORY A basic outline for a theory of phrase structure theory is accepted by all of the authors here; it is known as 'X-bar theory'. The concepts of X-bar theory are expressed in some form by a number of pre-generative linguists. For example, Bloomfield (1933) contrasted endocentric struc tures such as noun phrases and verb phrases with those he considered exocentric, e. g. prepositional phrases and clauses. Jespersen (1933), while presenting a functional system of description (in terms of 'ranks', where rank one is 'nominal', for example), clarified the relations among the head of a phrase, its modifier, and a phrase which modifies the modifier.
