Book Synopsis Hawker Hurricane Pilot's Flight Operating Manual by : Royal Air Force
Download or read book Hawker Hurricane Pilot's Flight Operating Manual written by Royal Air Force and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hawker Hurricane flew in the Battle of Britain against the German Luftwaffe. While Spitfires took on Nazi fighters, the Hurricanes assaulted enemy bombers. Between 8 August and 21 September 1940 Hurricanes scored 1,593 kills out of the 2,739 total claimed. The plane was designed and predominantly built by Hawker Aircraft Ltd. This pilot's flight operating manual was standard issue to R.A.F. pilots during WWII. Although this manual has been slightly reformatted to 8.5x11, care has been taken to preserve the authenticity of the text. Please note: British manuals are somewhat sparse in their descriptions and photos when compared to American manuals. Please look at the book preview before purchasing.

Book excerpt: The Hawker Hurricane was the mainstay of the RAF during the early years of World War II. It saw extensive service in the Battle of Britain, over the Mediterranean and even saw action on the Eastern Front. Reliable, sturdy, rugged and effective this fighter proved itself time and again in action against the Luftwaffe. With a 1,260 horsepower Merlin engine the Hurricane was, for its time, one of the best fighters ever produced. This detailed, technical manual reveals the technology behind the Hurricane's fighting ability. It examines the aircraft's engine, armament, controls, design and technical specifications to give a clear picture of the plane's strengths and limitations. Technical drawings, electrical plans and cockpit photographs support the text. The Hurricane II Manual is a facsimile of the original official workshop manual - used by the personnel who flew and maintained the aircraft - first published in the 1940s.

Book excerpt: Summer 1940, the Battle of Britain has just begun, you've just gained your RAF 'wings' and been selected to fly fighters - and one of the most rugged and successful fighter aircraft in the world at that, the Hawker Hurricane mark I. A slim booklet is pressed into your hands by your squadron leader and you are told to study it before your first flight. This booklet, the Air Ministry's PILOT'S NOTES HURRICANE I AEROPLANE is reproduced in this short book for the first time since the Second World War. The Air Ministry published Pilots Notes on every type of aircraft the RAF flew. They were designed so the pilot could familiarise themselves with the aircraft's individual controls, flying characteristics and operational limits, rather like an owner's manual. PILOT'S NOTES HURRICANE I AEROPLANE was first issued just before the war and reprinted in March 1940 and was the manual used by Battle of Britain pilots.Where is the safety catch on your gun button? How long can you use the emergency boost on your Rolls Royce Merlin engine? How do you set the range on your gun sight? How do you know if the undercarriage of your Hurricane has successfully deployed? At what speed does the Hurricane stall at?ABOUT THE AUTHORThe Air Ministry was a department of the British government with the responsibility of managing the affairs of the RAF. Pilot's Notes were in fact exact copies of sections from a far larger publication issued by the Air Ministry covering every aspect of the aeroplane including basic electrical system, details of the airframe, engine installation etc. These sections were used by the RAF ground crew 'erks' to help familiarise those whose job it was to keep such systems working. PILOT'S NOTES HURRICANE I AEROPLANE MERLIN II OR III ENGINE AP 1564A was first published in March 1939 but the edition used most widely by Battle of Britain pilots is the edition re-published here, the March 1940 reprint together with a handful of updates made during that summer of 1940. The updates were needed as the Hurricane was at the cutting edge of fighter aircraft design and small but significant upgrades were constantly being made to improve the Hurricane. In 1964 the Air Ministry was merged with the Admiralty and the War Office to form the Ministry of Defence.

Book Synopsis Hawker Hurricane Mk I–V by : Martyn Chorlton
Download or read book Hawker Hurricane Mk I–V written by Martyn Chorlton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-20 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the outbreak of World War II, only 111 Squadron and a handful of others were equipped with the Hurricane. Thanks to sudden massive orders and a well-organized Hawker sub-contracting production to Gloster and General Aircraft, more squadrons rapidly became operational. Cutting their teeth during the Battle of France, it was during the Battle of Britain that the type excelled and came to form the backbone of Fighter Command. While the Hurricane was steadily overtaken by the Spitfire in the fighter defence role, it remained the fighter of choice in North Africa and the Far East. Despite a large number being shot down in these far-flung conflicts, many received hasty repairs and returned to the fray while more fragile designs were permanently grounded. The Hurricane may not have been the prettiest or, the best-performing aircraft but, as Francis Mason stated: 'The Royal Air Force was glad to get the Spitfire...it had to have the Hurricane!'
