Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most successful naval fighter aircraft in history, the Grumman F6F Hellcat accounted for nearly 5200 kills during WWII. The Hellcat featured self-sealing fuel tanks, a bullet- resistant windscreen, and hydraulically-operated landing gear. The plane was rugged, and carried over 200 pounds of armor. Despite this, it was highly maneuverable and fast, thanks to a 2000 hp engine. Nearly 12,300 F6Fs were made during the war. They first saw action during the Tarawa invasion, and subsequently flew in every battle of the Pacific campaign. Hellcats accounted for nearly 75% of all aircraft kills in the Pacific. Originally created by the U.S. Navy, this flight operating manual taught pilot's everything they needed to know before entering the cockpit. It's a wonderful guide to one of history's great planes. Please note, this manual has been slightly reformatted and some color diagrams appear in black and white. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Book excerpt: Largely responsible for crushing Japanese airpower wherever the American fast carrier force sailed, the Grumman F6F Hellcat was considered the most important Allied aircraft in the Pacific during 1943 and 1944. Designed for speed, range, and climb to compete with Japan's exceptional Mitsubishi A6M Zero, it succeeded not only in engaging the "Zeke" on equal terms but also in dictating the rules of combat. Fighters in every sense of the word, the Hellcats were credited with destroying more than five thousand Japanese aircraft, gaining outright air supremacy over the invasion beaches, and helping ensure Allied amphibious victories in the Central Pacific. Aviation historian Barrett Tillman presents the full story of the fighter plane--the men who built and tested it, the squadrons that flew it, and the heroes it created. Heavily illustrated with photographs from the pilots' own collections, this spirited, carefully documented operational history is an absolute must for anyone interested in aviation history. It is now available for the first time in paperback.

Book excerpt: Whitey is the first complete biography of one of the last surviving World War II U.S. Navy aces, and one of the Navy’s most respected officers of any period. Following a typical American, mid-western boyhood, Whitey Feightner was in the vanguard of the huge group of young men thrust into World War II. Upon receiving his commission and his gold wings, he was assigned to a fighter squadron in the Pacific and soon found himself flying with the likes of Jimmy Flatley and Butch O’Hare, two leaders who imparted their own brand of flying skill and leadership to the young ensign. He flew through many of the war’s most hectic and dangerous campaigns, such as Guadalcanal and the Marianas, gaining nine official kills. There were times he should not have returned from a mission, but his own skill and positive outlook helped him make it through all the dangers. After the war, Whitey became a member of the Regular Navy and was assigned to several of the Navy’s most secret and action-filled projects at Patuxent River, Maryland. He flew and helped develop legendary fighters like the F7U Cutlass, F9F Banshee, and Cougar and the attack aircraft AD Skyraider as they joined the fleet, and was one of only two men who flew the radical F7U Cutlass in Blue Angels colors. Returning to the fleet in command of a squadron, and later of an air group, he continued to develop fighter tactics. In between tours at sea, he served in the Pentagon dealing with all the personalities and political turmoil of the time while trying to bring naval aviation into the future. Working with such luminaries as Hyman Rickover and Elmo Zumwalt was not for the feint-hearted, and even Whitey did not come away unscathed. Yet, through it all, he retained the affable demeanor that characterized this rare and highly skilled naval aviator. His life story could serve as a model for any young aviator to follow.

Book excerpt: David D. Allyn has led a life that others can only dream about. Adventurer, traveler, sailor, aviator, explorer, and big-hearted bon vivant, Dave came of age while sailing around the world on the last voyage of the tall Brigantine Yankee with all the accompanying tales of drudgery and heat punctuated by terrifying gales, tension amongst the crew members, and a too-close encounter with a one-thousand-pound bull shark. Then there was the time he survived emergency surgery on the ship’s kitchen table. An adrenaline junky, Dave also flew planes back in the days when you needed a helmet and goggles to do it. Aviators and historians will delight in his vivid accounts of flying vintage aircraft—139 different types in all, as well as his stories of collecting a large fleet of famous old aircraft and establishing a fixed base operation—it’s still there: Dolphin Aviation in Sarasota, Florida—and a museum. These stories aren’t just about boats and aircraft, however, they’re also about people and pristine landscapes. You’ll visit Tahiti, Bimini, and the Galapagos before tourists got there. You’ll meet cowboys, mechanics, skydivers, artists, deep-sea divers with a death wish, crazy drunks, and a host of other characters who knew how to live life large. A life-affirming, swaggering book, Yardarm and Cockpit is one wild ride without a seat belt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was early Cold War days when 17-year-old David Eagles applied to the Fleet Air Arm hoping to be a fighter pilot for his national service. He little imagined the career that would follow. After flying training with the US Navy and Australian Fleet Air Arm, he settled into Fleet Air Arm fighter pilot life. He progressed through Naval Test Pilot duties – where he was forced to eject from a Buccaneer during catapult launch trials – before joining British Aerospace and playing a major part in the cockpit design and flight-testing of the RAF's first fly-by-wire and swing-wing aircraft, the Panavia Tornado. His other experiences include ditching a Firefly into the sea and the near loss of the first British Tornado prototype after a bird strike. Finally, after 6,000 flying hours in sixty different types of aircraft, Eagles finished his career by making the first flight of the EAP, the technology demonstrator for the new Eurofighter Typhoon. Vividly illustrated with photographs, documents and plans, this is a fascinating memoir of naval-flying and test-flying some of the world's most iconic fighters.
